The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

my board came with bios 1.2 when I bought it at christmas and was wondering if it was left over old stock cos other people had bought previously and said they were getting 1.3, without even attempting an overclock my board died after about a week and a half and I was having crap loads of problems even trying to install an OS it would post just fine but the machine would just crash when XP was copying setup files... the board has great features and I hope to take advantage of them once my RMA comes through... shame that they are out of stock right now... :/

After a month I still dodn't feel 100% with this board and it's been the hardest system to pinpoint the problems/where the fault lies. I am overclocking so in some ways it is my own doing but then who doesn't oc these days?

Neo2 1.36b
Win. 3200
Audigy
Maxtor DM10

Drives:
Never had any problems with the sata DM10's apart from 30sec pausing on XP boot screen - just installed the 6.10 board drivers, uninstalled and put the 5.10's on. HOWEVER, this last build of XP I didn't have that issue, lol and have just used the 5.10's.

Audigy:
Was in the second slot above the orange one (so third one up) but started getting squeaky crackly sounds on music & World of Warcraft. Reboots would solve it but I moved it back to the one above the orange and that has now gone again.

Network:
Lost connectivity last night for the first time. Couldnt reinstall the 5.10's until I moved the Audigy back to the slot above the orange. Installed fine then but not had much time to test fully. WoW will fail quickly if this is still a problem.

Voltages:
Bloody things... whatever I set it to you can never guarantee it will boot at that voltage. I try to aim for 1.53-1.55 but often it will boot at 1.57-1.60 and the temperature suddenly increases at that point. Reboot and oh, back to 1.53.1.55. It's not much I know but I wish it would bloody stay still!

All this is just for info really. I initially i was running at 3xHTT and 9.5x 278 = 2640 and had no issues but just recently I seem to be having to back down to 270fsb. I think I might try the 1.41b bios at some point. I finally got around to taking an image so at least if I hose the system I can revert safely and save 5 hours reinstalling apps!

Oh one last thing, altho the RAM (PC4800 Adata TCCD) didnt appear to get hot, I changed my 92mm for a Zalman bracket and 120mm fan (which covers the heatsink and RAM squarely) and it instantly solved my SuperPi 8m failures after 5mins of running. This was at 3 4-4-10 1T and 2.85v.

ma MSI mobo serial is K040802XXXX anyone got any idea what bios this will be carrying, will it support my winnie.... do the older bioses still let you use the winnie but show "unknown processor." ??

Can anyone recommend an alternative to core centre for reading temperature?

I've been getting very strange readings - the core speed will jump up by 50mhz, yet cpu-z reports it as being fine.

I don't trust it one bit.

Have been too busy recently, have a hectic work life (shift work sucks sometimes). Will be doing some work on it tonight and finishing off tomorrow. Will report back then :)

I'm having a little trouble getting the vcore to 1.6, it's either 1.57 (which isn't up to the job) or 1.63 (which is a little too high for my liking)

It's just using the bios it came with at the mo (1.4 I think) Any suggestions?

Had my Neo PLat 2 N/F3 installed for a week now fine at stock. But I want to raise my clock approx 200mhz. When in the Bios the setting for HTT 5x 4x 3x etc is not there just an empty box, and I have to restart my PC to get this box off the screen!! Could someone please help? Thanks.

do a google for a proggy called CPUCool.....i've found this shows more realistic temps than the carp MSI proggy you get with the board.

I actually had a slight go at overclocking but don't have the patience to let memtest run for days......

Went into windows and ran Prime.......got bored after a while so cancelled it, and since then, my boot drive is like a brick moving through concrete. Seems to be running up to 4x slower on a lot of things.

Had a look at the hardware devices available and is this right?

IDE ATA/ATAPI Devices:
Primary IDE channel
Primary IDE channel
Primary IDE channel
Secondary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel
Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller
Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller
Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller

My previous board had just one for primary and secondary.

Properties, Advanced settings for the first primary options gives:

Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: UDMA Mode 6

finnaly got my neo 2 and post/setup seems fine. One problem cpuz shows my default vcore to be 1.348v, If I set it to auto in bios or to 1.4 it still shows 1.348(ish). What is the defualt vcore, I thought it was 1.4 for a winchester(3500+)??
****update****my windows keeps reseting, not a bsod, just restarts my pc. Is this a vcore undervolt problem, or is cpuz wrong?
