Arsenal lost over £100m in the last year's accounts (to end of May). That's before they went and spent well over £100m in the summer. The idea they would have had a massive warchest in January is laughable. Cutting the wage bill will definitely have been on the agenda. Other factors:
AMN was seemingly desperate to leave.
Kolasinac sale was a mistake but perhaps understandable in that he was [wrongly] considered below Tavares in the pecking order for backup LB and on about £100k/week
Letting Mari go on loan, not sure that was the right call given Chambers was sold and Saliba still out on loan. We only have 3 senior CBs without him, just about scraped through although I'm not convinced White and Gabriel were both 100% fit for the game this week. Again though he's on £85k/week so a half season loan saves about £2m.
Chambers was kind of surplus to requirements given the options available at CB/RB, out of contract in the summer so if he wasn't going to play may as well get rid.
