The new Arsenal Club Thread - *No Spoilers & Read OP Before Posting*

New deal for Arteta till 2025. Expected really - got the fans back on board in a way late Wenger/Emery didn’t, ruthlessly gutted the team (to our detriment in some ways) and despite the expected inconsistencies of a young team there’s guaranteed European football of some sort next season and the possibility of an earlier than expected CL spot (although I’m not counting my chickens there).

Straight out of the United Ole playbook. Enjoy.

Pretty much this. Offering him the contract before the end of the season is crazy. People forget Arsenal were top net spenders last summer and struggle in a league with no Europe and two teams that sacked their managers after the start. Arsenal are potentially getting 4th because Spurs have spent nothing and United are a mess not because of Arteta.

How is it remotely similar, didn't you give Ole a 3 year contract after 3 months in the job?

Emerson Royal £22mil
Bryan Gil £22mil
Bentancur £17mil
Kulusevski £9mil loan fee
Romero on loan and they're going to use their option to buy for circa £40mil

Regardless of how the season ends he's earned it, we're moving forward for the first time in years. If things go our way we have the potential to finish 3rd with the youngest squad in the league.

Bear in mind Arsenal will play a grand total of 45 games this season, which is the lowest since the mid-60s. Failure to reach any cup finals and no european distraction means that a top four finish (if it happens) wouldn't be quite as impressive as it sounds, or in other words, I think Arsenal would struggle to repeat it next season with European matches to contend with, they will be lacking a bit of firepower (top goalscorer has 12 in all competitions and both recognised strikers are out of contract).

Meh it’s not like it’s a long-term commitment. We tried to do what United have kept doing in the late-Wenger and Emery phases but unlike them it failed to plug enough of the leaks and we started to sink. They’re still floating along in the wake of the best boats and don’t look like catching up any time soon and don’t seem keen on a squad purge so it feels like they’re stuck in a sort of footballing Groundhog Day repeating the same thing over and over and not really getting anywhere. For us, once Edu came in we committed to the high-risk approach of crafting the bare bones of a new vessel and abandoning the old one, knowing we could fall further behind and that it wouldn’t be either cheap, consistent or deliver results straight away.

I think the majority of fans would agree we have a clear direction now, clear objectives in the transfer market and a team that feels worth getting invested behind. Losing is annoying now. Before it was greeted with apathy or even glee. The hostile, divided crowd is basically gone, bums are back in seats. I’m not sure if Arteta is going to be the one to take us to the next level, but he deserves being able to finish the squad rebuild (for now) vs having someone new come in who’ll change a lot while we’re still in figuring ourselves out.

Maybe the team will get more consistent as they age and it’s bolstered in the right places. Maybe Arteta will have a mare next season… but even if he does it’s never going to be that Wenger thing again where nobody at the club was willing to get rid of him until he chose himself - we’ll get rid, he gets a fat pay check and we get someone else. For now though, we‘re improved on last season and back to European football of some sort.

So Elneny has been playing well lately, wonder if they’ll now offer him a new contract?
I hope so, has come in and done a great job, has said he just wants to stay and is happy to be a squad player, great attitude apparently in training, I think he's improved his passing and build up play as well, a very useful player to have.

For sure, if you go down this route, and give Arteta the authority to freeze out and then free transfer their two biggest stars (Ozil & Auba), then it really doesn't make sense to suddenly do an about face and bin it all. It needs to be a medium-long term project, get the side evolving playing Arteta's way, developing the young players. What this means however is we need to be saying it doesn't matter what happens next season, Arteta will still be in a job for the following season, unless it's something totally catastrophic like serious threat of relegation. They will suffer growing pains, majority of the team have never played CL football, there will be heightened expectations whereby all the praise being heaped on the young players will start to morph into critisism when the going gets tough. Obviously Saka got some **** after the Euro final but the also got a massive amount of support - I don't want to downplay the importance of racism, but it's different to be given harsh measured criticism about your personal play from seasoned pundits, than just mindless trolling from some idiot on twitter.
So the point is, we can't have a knee-jerk next season, we need to be thinking 3 years ahead not 1 year ahead, otherwise there's no point giving Arteta the sort of the control he's brandished over the past 2 years.

agreed.

I think if we can get a decent run in the CL if we get it that is and have a decen run in fa cup, league cup and fight for 4th again, i will be happy. if arsenal as you say finish below mid table then maybe a concern for arteta.

ut we need to stick to him as you say and slowly grow this team and manager together. Both very very young and in principle, could be at arsenal for the next 10 years(both players we have and the manager)

I think a good run in CL/FAC/LC plus top4 is maybe expecting too much for next season. That would mean going from 45 matches to perhaps 55-60 matches, big workload for some of the key players. I'd say it's more like, CL is a learning experience for young squad, League Cup left to the reserves/U23s, so lets have a good run in the FA Cup and just see where we are in the league at Xmas. Top 2 are out of reach, Chelsea hard to predict due to the takeover situation, you'd expect MU to be stronger next year than this, who knows about Spurs. I guess it's not beyond the realms of possibility for Newcastle to be challenging for Europe next season either depending on their transfer activity, I rate Howe very highly.

under 23's you say? Our current squad is under 23 ;)

But anyways yea i hear ya

For me, cementing a regular CL spot is most important. If we can’t do that, we can kiss goodbye to a lot of the young talent we have. The likes of Saka and Martinelli are not gonna be satisfied with EL every season

Next season will be huge for Arsenal. Chelsea have been on holiday for quite a while now and should be better next season. United might by some miracle pull their finger out next year. Tottenham will spend in the summer and if they keep Kane, Son and Conte they will be vying for top 4. God knows what Newcastle will be like come the start of the season.

Its not going to be anything like as easy a ride as this next season when it comes to getting top 4 and Arsenal have ridden their luck a bit from what I have seen of them lately. A good summer should put you in the mix for top 4 though. Still don't think Arteta is anything like a top class manager though.

Good stat I saw just now.

Arsenal have made 25% of the foul throws in the Premier League this season.
Of those, 60% were made by Tavares, despite the fact he's only played 1080 minutes (less than other players used in wide positions like Tierney, Tomi, Cedric, ESR, Saka, Martinelli etc)

How hard is it to throw the ball back in correctly! An absolute farce, Tavares errors this season have cost quite a few goals, he is just not good enough right now. After that performance though half that team is not good enough and the other half need to up their effort. They should reimburse the fans who went to watch that embarrassment of a performance.

Is Arteta the right manager? I've liked what he has done but the team ignored him and his tactics against Newcastle, he could not get anything out of them, for the first time im doubting he can do anything more. That team had nothing and shamed the club with a performance so bad I don't think Arteta should stay.

It's very hard to judge with the squad we have. I have some concerns re player management and squad rotation, we keep leaving squad/fringe players out for long periods and then expecting them to have worldies. No europe (even europa) and lack of runs in the cup have really hurt our ability to give them minutes and keep them sharp.

If he gets the additions required and then goes on to have a disappointing season then the doubt will start to creep in. I can forgive the streaky nature of our season as that ties in with the age of the squad, young players always go through patches of good and bad form. We need some more experience to help them through those periods, and Arteta needs to work on his player management.

That January window really was unforgivable though, it was obvious we were in with a shout at getting CL football and there was always a massive risk in relying on such a small young squad. Spurs brought in Kulusevski and Bentancur and its really helped them edge top 4.

Not clear to me how much money was available in January though considering we aren't in Europe and still recovering from reduced revenues during lockdown.
I also think Arteta wants to build something with a young squad in his way of playing, a mid-season signing could disrupt that, be hard to quickly integrate and potentially stifle development. I wasn't too concerned about the last transfer window in terms of the lack of arrivals, although Auba getting a free transfer was annoying.

The big issue I have with Arteta is he is super stubborn when it comes to players he falls out with, it's like a ticking timebomb. The two biggest names in the squad (Ozil and Auba) got frozen out and then released for free (bearing in mind they cost £100m), same thing with Guendouzi who I suspect he won't retain long term. Not sure what the situation with Saliba (Ligue 1 YPOTY) and Torreira is but they should be in the squad also.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Pepe, I remain unconvinced he's the great piece of business that people made out on this forum, he's below Saka/Martinelli/ESR in the pecking order now and we'd be lucky to break even on his final year (i.e. we owe £18m on him still and I can't see us getting more than that if he were sold).

Tavares is just Andre Santos II, we were too hasty letting Kolasinac leave as he's a better understudy to Tierney IMO. Will annoy me if we loan out Tavares next season, should just get shot of him. Loans kinda make sense for players with potential whom you want to gain experience and develop with a view to establishing themselves, but not as a holding pattern for deadwood.

This point seems to have got missed by so many people. In the January window Arsenal let Maitland-Niles, Kolasinac, Mari, Chambers and Auba all leave without bringing anybody into the squad. In isolation you can accept the Auba situation - there were issues there and it was better for all if he was gone but to let a further 4 senior players go without bringing in any backup smacks of a club desperate to cut costs. Yes, those players may not have been up to it but if Arsenal could have afforded to then I'm sure they'd have held on until they could find replacements because ultimately the lack of cover in midfield and defence killed Arsenal in the 2nd half of the season.
