The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

70D will oblitorate the 6D in live view AF performance, so that's not a worry. Battery is to be expected really. Didn't find lag to be an issue.

The ability to pull images off the camera without a laptop, straight to your phone will also be a very useful feature.

Hm, fair enough, I mean I'm sure it'll be a great camera, but I'm hoping you didn't get it just because of good live view, and EOS remote.... ;)

It does have good live view, the best of any DSLR? But no, I got it because of better AF, faster shutter rate, 1/8000 shutter speed which means I can use a 35mm f1.4 at f1.4 in daylight.

I don't like being blunt over someone elses purchase but the 70D I just don't see the point. The features above a beyond the 7D don't make sense for me. As you wanted a temporary upgrade until a 7D2 this doesn't make sense really?

The previous complaint with the 550D was burst speed, ISO performance and AF performance. Well I haven't used the 70D but from what I've read some are saying it's slightly better ISO performance than the 7D and some saying it's actually worse. I look forward to hearing your views on that. It's not like the 7D performed well in that area.

Surely with the considerations you mentioned before a 7D would have been a better stop gap until genuine crop sensor noise improvement was made? It would have been much cheaper and lost far less money with a far better built body and none of those stupid cheap body wheels on the back they now use ;)

I do hope it's stunning and you get many years use out of it, but from what you listed as a priority it seems a strange buy.

:)

No offense is intended in this post and I'm very keen to hear you views of the ISO when you use it in light at a motorsport event when you have to push 400 and beyond. I honestly hope Canon have made improvements but I fear they aren't making enough headway in this area which is why the 7D replacement is taking so very long.

It's not a temp upgrade any more. UK retail price between the two is not a lot, the cost of buying CF cards would swallow the difference up quicker than you think. It's obvious the 7D mkII is going to be pushed further up market, probably way out of my reach and probably to the point where you'd think 'I might as well get a 5D mkIII' if I'm spending that much.

If I spent my life trackside I probably would have gone with a 7D, but I don't, I also want to do more video work and the flip out screen will be very useful for that, as will the new live view AF system.

As for low light, you're probably right, I get some pretty brutal noise on my 550D from as low as ISO 200 if it's a dark/dimly lit subject, Canon haven't made massive ground but I'm hoping it's enough. This will be counted by a 70-200 f/2.8 of some description in the nearish future which will let in two more stops of light compared to my current telephoto. Which is the difference between working at ISO 800 and ISO 200. I'd like to think the DIGIC 5+ processor will help a little bit in this regard.

7D is a bit of a one trick pony now, I feel a 70D is the better all rounder, and a proper successor to the 50D which was a very popular camera for motorsport.

Fair enough, again interested to see/hear you r results in a couple of months :)

Yeah but how often will you shoot wide open, panning for motorsport which presumably is what you use your telephoto for primarily? I imagine most of your shots in your catalogue even if you had the 2.8 wouldn't be anywhere near 2.8?

I know from my experience using the 2.8 at football and stopping motion that I wouldn't get near decent slower shutter speeds for panning at 2.8 even at ISO 100 or 200 :)

Not all of my shots are panning shots, there are situations where the car is coming towards me and I want to freeze the action but can't because it's an Autumn afternoon and the light is dropping off badly.

Shots like the below are nice when you have the luxury of nice light but when it falls off you end up stuck.

Seems like they're keeping that to xD cameras now.

Some initial thoughts.

AF is good, but I guess this will be subjective as I am only coming from a 9 point AF camera, after some fine adjustment the camera tracks fast moving objects coming towards me very well. Some microadustment was needed, but at least the option is there. Being able to switch AF modes/zones/points without moving the camera away from my eye is cool, general ergonomics are very good and the grip is comfortable for long periods of use. The omission of the joysitck is a shame as I feel it could have been a great benefit but the combination of the top/back jog wheels works fine and it's very easy to change things on the fly. Having a CA correction profile for my 17-55 f/2.8 is nice too.

Image quality is an improvement, low light performance wasn't really tested but shots at ISO 400 are clean where my old camera would introduce a lot of grain/noise in dark areas. Battery lasted about 1200 shots with some video, more than acceptable. JPEG quality seems to be much better too, I always found Canons JPEG output to be a bit soft but looking at the results from shooting in RAW + S1 (I did this because I knew I wouldn't be able to touch the RAWs until LR is updated) I am more than pleased. http://i.imgur.com/vxZcYIM.jpg

My only gripe is some of the plastics used for the flip out screen, they scratch too easily and that's disappointing. It's a shame that they use plastic for xxD cameras, if it had a mag alloy body and a joystick it would be perfect, but I guess we can't all get what we want. All the buttons work nicely and it's a nice camera to handle and use, but I don't think it will wear well.

I figure that I'm more happy about having more feature than with the camera itself, but I can see this being the last crop camera I buy until I go FF in a few years. Once Adobe pull their finger out and release an update for lightroom I can post some proper sample shots.

trust me the lack of AF points is annoying, albeit as it makes you work a little harder i suppose it makes you a little better at finding the right angles and distances.

my one wish is that they had put another row of af point around the current ones making it a 22 point AF system, the lack of those af points give the viewfinder too much blank space, i find i do a lot of focus recompose which always carries its problems

6D is Joystickless as well. Wouldn't be surprised if 7D2 is without as well to be honest :s

It wants to have the older style back body wheel too and none of that flip out screen stuff. My niece has just got a 600D and the plastics on that look and feel like my sons Vtech kiddie zoom. I know there is a use for them but for me I'd much rather have a fixed screen, they just look and feel so much nicer :)

Unless you are trying to get a shot from above your head (e.g. crowd shot) or so low that using the viewfinder is simply impossible or you just don't want to lie down (e.g. dirty floor). The flip screen is amazing. So glad I have one on my D5100.

And, frankly, aesthetics are at the bottom of the list of concerns when it comes to buying a camera. You buy them for the pictures they take, not how they would look in them :p

I don't care too much for the flip screen.

Have to admit that it would have been slightly useful at the Aston thing where getting a low angle over a barrier would have saved me the frankly excessive cropping and rotating I'm having to do at the moment in post, but it's not the end of the world not having it.

Mag Alloy is nice for weather sealing, but with everything needing plastic tops for GPS/WiFi built in, you lose some of it anyway.

The AF is really the thing I miss on the 6D, the ISO performance makes up for the loss of AF compared to 7D (which was the competition for me at the time).

That said, if a 5D4 comes out and I'm still using the camera a lot and have a bit of money lying around I may well invest in one. Not going to bother upgrading to a 5D3 mind you.
