The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Well I picked up a Sigma 18-35mm today :)

I tried two in Park Cameras and both seemed to back focus (one a lot more than the other) so I bought the best one. With the micro adjust on my 70d as far as it goes it's almost about right but perhaps still slightly short so I guess I'll buy the USB dock rather than return it and hope they can find a better one.

Love the lens so far :) My first lens faster than F2.8 so it's nice having that option and having it on a wide zoom is even better :D

My advice to most people is to rent.

Most of the stuff that we need can actually be hired out from our CLR for free. I haven't bothered myself as i own most of the desired kit (stedicam, slider, e.t.c), and also because there tends to be a long waiting list.

Im thinking of upgrading from my 600D and was leaning towards the blackmagic, but i just can't quiet justify it. :o

Latest lens to add to my set. Waiting now to hear about any D400 launch next year. If not, might look to upgrade my old D80 to a D7100.

I'm in the process of selling all of my DSLR gear in order to go mirrorless.

As I'm an impatient git and know that my gear will sell eventually (only a 7D and 17-55mm 2.8 to go) I purchased a Fuji X-Pro 1 from Amazon today. There's a real great bargain going on over at Amazon at the moment where if you buy the XP1 and 18mm combo you get a £50 Amazon voucher and a free Fuji lens of your choice out of the 35mm, 60m or 27mm. I'm going for the 60mm as it's the most expensive and I will use the £50 voucher to buy the 35mm. Fuji are also doing a £100 cashback offer with the 35mm so I'm getting it for £259 instead of £409!

Can't wait to go mirrorless because I'm getting a bit sick of lugging around a hefty lump of a DSLR and a large lens. The image quality of the XP1 is astonishing too!

I thought you were selling the M9?

Still might have to if I have to do some studio stuff for my mates company as I don't have the gear anymore for it. I toyed with the idea of getting a nikon Df but after the god awful "user" review from kai (digital rev) I've really been turned off from it lol.

Might have to get a D800/D800e and either some flash equipment though.

I am toying with a Fuji X-E1 and a 35mm 1.4 as a toy...but I can't help but think the money could be better spent on say a 50/1.2 (or not).

Did you buy new?

If so, get the free lens deal rolling! Got my free 35mm for mine. So tasty. :D

Absolutely love this camera.

Could you explain more about this free 35mm lens? Edit, found it, its an offer until end of January...

So basically:-

X-M1 + 16-50mm+ 35mm = about £650.
X-pro-1 + 18mm free 35mm = £900.

it'd be a shame to sell though. How much studio work do you need to do?

Around 3000 frames and a few videos for numerous websites my friends making as part of his company. Don't fancy renting as it'll take me a while to do it as I've got an extremely busy schedule coming up for the first 6 months of the year :(

Yes indeed thats about it. I would go with the latter option. Its a stunning camera.

Get a D800 for studio work and sell the M9. 3,000 frames in a studio without the right lenses would be annoying.

Decided to repurchase a 70-300mm VR Ready for my trip to San Francisco and Los Angeles next week

I have a EF 70-300L IS USM and I was thinking about getting tele convertor,
does the AF work ?

It worked with all focus points for me but see my post below that I posted in October. I eventually sent my 5diii back to Canon who said the logic board needed replacing. They did it at a cost just short of £200 which the Hong Kong company I purchased from ( can't include the name as it gets starred out ) refunded me within 24 hours of me notifying them.

Kenko 1.4x BUT........

As of a couple of days ago my 5diii will no longer AF with any of my lenses (50, 100L, 24-105L and 70-300L) with or without the extender in place. It will focus using contrast detect in live view so the camera is able to control the lens focus but when using normal AF all the lenses go from close up to infinity then stop with no focus lock. I have spoken to Canon support who had me reset all settings etc and still no luck so it is going back to Canon for repair.

It may have nothing to do with the kenko 1.4x but it does seem coincidence that the camera had been fine for almost a year yet 2 weeks after getting the converter the AF stops working.

I will have to do some research in to this issue.
I was hoping to go on a sarfari later in the year.;)

My Fuji X-Pro 1 & 18mm F2 arrived today. My, my, my.... It's so nice!

Picture quality is superb and much nicer than my 7D. The high ISO is incredible and I have completely usable images even at 6400.

Handling wise, it's taking time to get used to. It's obviously a lot smaller in the hand and it feels like I'm cramping up almost when using it but I am going to buy the extended grip which should alleviate the problem somewhat. It has no wheel or joystick that I'm used to with the 7D but I'm slowly getting there.

It feels very well put together, more so than the 7D and all while remaining ever so light.

I've not been able to test it properly yet because my SD card was delivered at 5:30pm and it's been quite dark but I will be giving it a proper go tomorrow and I can't wait!

My initial thoughts are that I am pleased to have gotten rid of the Canon and I can see myself taking more pictures for sure. Now all I need is my 35mm 1.4 to be delivered and I'm a happy bunny.
