The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

I've bought a toy camera.

Nikon J1 by coachjamesbull, on Flickr

Will hopefully get a good bit of use, as opposed to carrying an slr around. I have an underwater housing on the way too, all be it slowly, so I can try it out at some of the swim sessions I coach.

I can (almost) get my entire desk in shot whilst sitting in front of it, rather than from across the room like with my Nifty!

Just wish the Rain would stop so I can go out an have a play outside with it!! :(

Been to look and play with the D7100, dear god!. I almost wish I hadn't as I now really want it. Ive reserved it until tomorrow for £875 (with the £100 cash back) body+18-105mm lens kit + a Nikon system bag. I just need a night to mentally prepare myself for dropping that amount.

It's a nice camera, did you have a feel of a few canons while you were there?

Yeah I was in there about 1.5 hours, I think the chap was getting fed up with me fingering his merchandise :p In truth I could have taken any of them really but kept coming back to the D7100.

The Cannons that I looked at (700D and the 70D and another I cant remember) were really nice, It was pretty hard going separating them and to be honest I don't think I could have. The thing that settled it though was something pretty basic, initial gut attraction to the D7100 and I really think the touch screens of the Cannons would drive me up the wall in so much I would be constantly having to wipe them down. Stupid I know but I'm a bit anal :P

It's better to take your time and be sure when you're spending that sort of money though, I doubt you'll be disappointed with it, now you just need to pick it up and start snapping/posting in the pic thread :)

Haha, I'm the same. After years of therapy I've finally accepted greasy face/screen syndrome. On a DSLR there's not much you can do to avoid it, apart from wearing a balaclava, or only using live view :)

testing camera saturday

My arms still ache Monday.

full frame
100% crop, very impressed with the vr as after carrying it around for 5 hours in the zoo I was able to get sharp shots in the cold windy conditions. 500mm F4 + D800E

Fantastic camera and a good lens too, although the latter always looks odd to me with no focal distance window.

Enjoy, you've got some great tools there!

^^^ basically they sent it in error?

You do know it doesn't come under Unsolicited Goods Act right and legally isn't yours, although it shouldn't be at your expense to return it.

Morally however, what you do is up to you.

I mean legally I doubt they would pursue it, or can do much, morally, its up to you and part of the forum will come down hard on you for not returning it. I bet it is tempting to keep it, I am sure we all are, £1k in profit!....but telling the world is not the smartest thing to do :p

p.s. you keep adding your website address to your photos in the watch thread, I didn't want to say it there and change the subject, the rule is watermarks are fine, but no website addresses.

Any watermark, within the general forum rules laid out in the FAQ (no vulgarity, etc) is to be allowed so long as it does not contain links and URLs to external websites.

:)

You should probably let them know about that. Or just hope they don't realise :p Jealous though, and I think driving lessons are probably a better investment ATM :(

e; grey import, meh keep it. That's not legal advice though :p @raymond it will fall under DSR.

:)

Thanks for being so observant, Raymond.

I'll revise the watermark, I never realised that the rules regarding watermarks has changed.

I've seen some people with Facebook name spaces as watermarks, while I get it's not a full URL and therefore allowed, it's still more identifiable than a word/name watermark without a domain prefix. It's pretty obvious that a facebook address will end in .co.uk or .com

Anyways ;)
