The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

The BeFree is good, but lacks the ability to convert to a monopod which sweetens the deal of the Reged.

Size is important to a degree as it needs to fit in my rucksack along with a large lens and an astro track, so the less space it takes the better. My only reservation is the claimed 8kg load which is 2.5kg higher then what the others claim.

Icing on the cake would be Arca compatibility for the head, but I could always just put a small Acratech head on it :)

I looked into getting a softbox 2 weeks ago, it turned out to be a massive mine field. Got to think about upgrade path, brand reliability, build quality, all sorts..

Yeah I have been researching it off and on for nearly 2 years. Watching stacks of videos and all the Mark Wallace stuff on lighting for what seems like forever. Also he did a very good speedlight only studio lesson and I decided on the Lastolite stuff because of ease of setting changes from the back.

It's highly unlikely I will ever use anything more than speedlights and these take 2 on the bracket that comes with it to keep refreshing times lower. I'm going to get another when I get paid.

Well, I don't have 8KG of gear as I don’t have a massive telephoto, I can however attach a 5D3 with a Sigma 70-200/2.8 with a 600EX-RT and see what happens. I really can't see it being a problem though. I can understand the reservation about the 8kg claimed weight limit, but even on the conservative side, it should hold at least 7kg or even 6kg. If you look at others like the Sirui 025x, they use a 22mm wide columns, the Redged uses a 25mm wide column, and carbon fibre is stronger than aluminium in the Manfrotto so I suspect that is where the 8kg comes from, the combination of wider column and construction of carbon and magnesium.

The Monopod is a bonus, makes a great walking stick if you are treking, leaving the rest of the tripod in the bag. The Arca Swiss head is also a bonus, although I am not concern about that as its not something I've even thought about…I mean now that I have it, I am not sure what it means to me and what I can do with it?

The feet is both rubber and spike, although the spike isn't that deep but at least it should help if you are on icy ground.

I will have to research more before I go into soft boxes, it is just a massive massive minefield.

I've read loads of recommendation on the Manfrotto BeFree. Lots of good feedback at a good price.

Have just signed for my BeFree and initial impressions are great it's nicely made reasonably light and will fit in my carry on for the trip to Iceland this month!

Oh and my Samyang 14mm has just landed from OneStop in Hong Kong :)

I don't have grips for my 5Ds anymore, I did for the mk2 but I realised I shot without it all the same so I sold it.

The Redged also have rubber seals on all the twist joints so hopefully is more weather resistant, but from what I've read, no tripod is if you use it in salt water.

how stable and high can that tripod go?

There are alternatives around the same length, there are other tripods that are lighter.

The Sirui 025x is 32cm but 800g and extend longer to 130cm, it's just don't hold as much weight as the Redged. It is practically the same tripod but different centre column design.

The Giottos would've been perfect if it was 3cm shorter as it has a working height of 135cm and under 1kg in weigh.

There is of course smaller ones even

Food for thought eh? :)

Ha, only just got around to looking here again. That's dangerous for me to start reading that lot, I'll never buy one. I still haven't got around to buying a main tripod as I keep reading things. I'm a year down the road from the last time I was going to get one before I just started reading around :D

Why did you want a shorter one? For packing/travel restrictions?

Ah poo, just read the bits I missed. If it falls over with the 85L on it, it might not be what I'm after, after all. I was hoping for something covering wide to 200mm lenses. I just wanted something to slip in a bag or hook on the side with minimum hassle.

Well I took the plunge and have one on the way along with a LowePro Runner 350. Was trying to hold out for the new Nikon 35 but I guess I can wait till I'm either in the US next or there's a few second hand ones floating around :)

Super, thanks muchly.

It is 38mm i think.

It is quite stable for its size and weight, it can go 1m on paper but I just measured it, the top of the plate is 108cm.

5dmk3, with a Sigma 70-200 and a 600EX-RT on its side.

and the ball head holding it all without moving at a 45 degree angle.

I said it would fall over if you push it, all tripods at this weight class would.

I wanted this size because it fits in my messenger bag. no hassle.

Stick a 70-200 on it and give it a prod for me :D

I think I've decided on getting a 70-200 2.8mkii with an extender, rather than the 24-70mkii as I don't think I'd see much use from the 24-70 as I can't stand the thought of not having 1.2/1.4, using money saved for a new bag, travel tripod and some other bits including a website. I just bought 4 domains :D

Well I've got a couple of things lined up that may require a balanced tripod and I don't really want to take a full tripod with me. One is a water event, and another is car photos although I may go with a monopod for that, depending on what the day brings. Barring laying in the mud, which I don't fancy I thought I could pre set up certain angles using a nifty travel tripod :D

That looks very stable for the size, can't wait till mine arrives in a couple of days :)

Could you possibly let me know the dimensions of the bag it fits in, as I want to set up my LowePro tomorrow and leave enough room for it to just slot in.
