The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

It is 38mm i think.

Ah nice, that looks promising. Thanks.

Speaking of softboxes, these two were gifts, the left one is a reflector softbox style thinf to bounce the flash off at any angle, who needs walls/ceilings? :p That was given to me by a buddy a while back and the Lastolite softbox is also quite good. I have 2 more rectangular speedlite softboxes slightly smaller but this one works better due to the internal diffuser part before the external screen.

I find using these all to be of much more use than lugging the big Bowens lighting kit around and these offer more intimate fine tuning.

Is your outer diffuser a different colour white from the inner diffuser?

Also a bit miffed with myself, I thought I could angle the head with my existing umbrella hotshoe bracket but I need another lastolite tilt bracket for the softbox. More postage costs

22cm x 22cm - With one of the YN-560s on it it's just right for outside or inside with "Rembrandt" lighting.

Stick a 70-200 on it and give it a prod for me :D

70-200 is going to be a much easier test for a tripod than an 85L or 24-70L because you'll be mounting the plate on the lenses tripod ring rather than on the body, so it's much more balanced.

Seriously considering the Redged, looks like Raymond has done all the necessary research for me- cheers :D

Building a drone for one of my uni assignments, might follow this through to become an aerial photographer for production shoots.

Item number 1 on my northern lights shopping list, the Samyang 14mm f2.8 great price and scary sharp wide open for the money, will almost certainly be in the members market by mid March as I don't think I can justify keeping it sadly!

and Item number 2 a Manfrotto BeFree tripod, took me ages to make a decision on this it had to be short enough to fit in my hand luggage light enough to allow me to still take some clothes but still solid enough to cope with the likely weather conditions in Iceland! I was also running low on funds after the above lens purchase and the thermals, I had originally decided on DIAT carbon fiber tripod from ebay but was badly let down by the sole ebay trader selling them so in the end opted for known Manfrotto quality which for £129 can't be sniffed at. It's not as small or as light as Raymonds recent purchase but it's still only 40cm when collapsed and 1.4KG, the build quality is excellent as you'd expect and I'm happy with it the only real negative is the lack of a bag hook but I will improvise with some paracord.

Collapsed with the 5d mkii and 24-105mm for comparison

Stood up with the 5d mkii and 24-105mm mounted

Well my Reged and Lowepro Runner 350 arrived, I have to rebuild one of the legs as they'd not put the anti-rotation sleeves in right, but other then that it looks fine and feels much more stable then I thought. Will do some proper testing once I get home :)

Got some small bits n bobs in time for the good weather.
Flash, a simple £4 diffuser for it, extension tubes for macro and a cheapish 10 stop ND to just have a play with.

I had a 5D2 before which I sold in November, always had half an eye on a D700 as 'The Still Photographer's Camera' but the used prices are often £900-1100, for which you could get a D600, so it had to be a good deal for me to pick one up.

Initial impressions compared to 5D2 are that it feels a lot heavier and more solid in the hand, it also seems more responsive...and the shutter sound is great, SNAP!

I had a look at a D600 but didn't get on with it, the controls just felt all over the place. Picked up a D800 and the controls just felt right, didn't really need the video malarkey or pixels so picked up a D700 with the intention of building up a FX lens collection as I'd sold all my crop Canon gear. Will pick up a D800 towards the end of the year and have my D700 as a second body.

Never used a 5D2 so can't really compare, the shutter sound is great although still only rated for 150k.

How much did you pick it up for and what's the click count?
