The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Picked the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 DC OS HSM yesterday. Not had a chance to play with it due to the weather, but it seems like a great general purpose lens:

Was looking at one of these before I got the Canon 17-55 f2.8. How much did you pay for it? Be good to see some shots with it once the weather clears up, meant to be a nice lens

It's really nice. I paid £310 but you can get them for as little as £289 from LCE as a second-hand unit.

I took some test shots, but I've not had a chance to really play with it.

Over the past few months I have collected a new set of gear, have a look:

Ooo now that I like. That would be extremely handy for some things I've got coming up.

{edit} Yep, looking at the site I'm definitely getting one of those! Cheers :D

There are alternatives around the same length, there are other tripods that are lighter.

The Sirui 025x is 32cm but 800g and extend longer to 130cm, it's just don't hold as much weight as the Redged. It is practically the same tripod but different centre column design.

Gitzo - 35cm, 1.16kg at £700

Manfrotto BeFree 40cm, 1.4kg at £150.

Giottos VGRN 8225, 33cm, 0.95kg, £250

The Giottos would've been perfect if it was 3cm shorter as it has a working height of 135cm and under 1kg in weigh.

There is of course smaller ones even

Redged TSA-322K

or the entire Mefoto range

Food for thought eh? :)

First thing I have bought in so long. Not that interesting but I got a 54cm softbox to try. Got this one as it came with the brackets so was cheaper than getting the non named one which comes without brackets.

I looked into getting a softbox 2 weeks ago, it turned out to be a massive mine field. Got to think about upgrade path, brand reliability, build quality, all sorts.

I watched a vid the other day about the differences between all sorts of lighting, from beauty dish, softboxes to the Broncolor para range. The Para 133 and the 100cm Octobox is my favourite.

New Tripod Redged 525k, 30cm, 1.2kg.

That's looks to be a cracking tripod and the weight limit is unbelievable for something so small!

I've been looking for a new carry on tripod for a while that can take a super wide and tracker and it looks to fit the bill exactly. All the others I've looked at top out around 5kg not leaving much margin.

What's the build quality like and does it feel stable with a fair load on it?

I won't deny that it is top heavy with my 5D/85L on it, of course it is, those 2 together is 3x the weight of the tripod so the centre of gravity is way high so if you kick it, it will fall over, especially if the legs are at its shortest (so less spread out). There is no getting away from that as it is pure physics.

But if you don't touch it, it is fairly stable, and very stable once you hook something heavy on the hook underside.

You'd expect it to be a top heavy with a few KG load on it, the addition of the hook is great as you can take a canvas bag with you and fill it with rocks :)

Have you tried it outside yet, wondering how it performs with breezes and if any vibration/shake is present on a reasonably long exposure?

Not yet, I haven't got anything in mind and my garden has a rubbish view. I have a couple of trips coming up in the next month or 2 so will definitely bring it with me to test it out.

But as you can see the posts with all the links to other tripod, I do think this is the best of the bunch in terms of compact size, built materials, built quality, features, weight and especially value for money. I mean look at the Gitzo, £700 and only can take 5.5kg?

Well I'm looking at one over the next few weeks so if you do take it on an outing let me know how you get one with it.

I've been looking at quite a few, if I'm honest the BeFree was at the top but the Redged just blows it out of the water on paper, especially seen as I'm looking at getting a RRS Arca plate to replace my RC4. The Gitzo is nice but you're effectively paying for the logo with the smaller stuff.

I've been eyeing up those redged tripods (aluminium versions) among others. Was slightly put off by the 5 sections legs though... reckon they'd hold up in a headwind Raymond?

Oh and excuse my ignorance but the head says its 'B-series', is that Arca compatible?

I've read loads of recommendation on the Manfrotto BeFree. Lots of good feedback at a good price.

But it did not fit my main criteria of 30cm (or close to it). It is 40cm long when folded. The reason being I take only my messenger bag out, so the tripod has to fit inside it. If it's too big I won’t bother taking it with me and would chance it doing it the old way – wallet under the lens for angled support whilst placing it on anything from top of a bin to edge of an handrail on the side of a mountain.

The BeFree is simply too long, it is fine as a carryon to fit inside a hand luggage but to me that's not travelling size, travelling size means not compromising what I use day to day and not having to change the way I am used to carry my gear.

edit - I believe the head is acra compatible, but need further research !

I think with proper weight support through the hook, it should stand some wind, obviously the stuff outside at the moment would blow over any tripod though.
