The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Did you get the batteries and memory cards though?

Nope.. need to go back to get some, funny enough the 4 & 8GB cards I use in my EOS 20D don't last very long in the Nikon. Which kind of leads me on to the next question, how do people manage their storage cards?

Part of me is tempted to go get a few 64GB CF cards (4 will probably suffice for now), the sensible part of me is telling me to get 32GB cards.

I'm leaning towards buying 8x32GB CF cards (works out about £20 more expensive), will be dumping images on the laptop when I get back to base

Which way would you go?

Also can anyone suggest a decent bag? Need a rucksack style of bag where I can get to the camera without needing to put the bag down & needs to be comfortable enough to carry around for an 8ish hour day (Ideally needs to hold a D810, 24-70 2.8, tripod, water, food & probably a 14-24mm 2.8)

I wouldn't go back for cards or batteries, otherwise you'll end up with a 14-24 and a 70-200.......and still not have either the batteries or cards!

I use a couple of sets of 64 CF/SD with the camera set for redundancy, I can generally get away with an entire shoot on just one set of cards, which is nice and convenient.

As for bags, if I want to travel light I use the lowepro runner 350 or if I'm out all day or going on a hike an f-stop loka with a large ICU.

The other option I use when I only need to take one lens is a crumpler jackpack which fits perfectly at the bottom of my osprey and leaves loads of room for other stuff.

Be careful with your choice of CF card for the 810. (I also upgraded from a 20D too) I had some kingston ultimate 8, 16, 32 and a 64GB cards and only the 8GB card works in the 810. (The others work in my dad's 800 though) I ended up buying a 32GB Lexar pro 800x card which works perfectly.

I use lexar pro 800X CF cards with lexar pro 600xSD card As backup. Really, to this day I haven't needed more than the 32GB, and includes my recent 10 day trip to costa rica.

Set your camera to 12bit lossless RAW. 14bit for landscape wok where you are pushing things to the limits.

Not the most exciting thing but I've found situations where I thought it would be handy. I was able to try it at the show yesterday and with £20 off I couldn't resist.

Ordered a Canon 16-35 F4 L IS +77mm adapter for Lee filters this morning. Will use this mainly on full-frame (my bodies are a 1D-X and a 1DMkIV but I generally just use the 1D-X now).

I ordered a used 24-70 F4 L IS this morning too. Got back from my trip to Ghana on Monday, took the 5D + 20-35 f3.5-4.5 USM + 70-200 F4 L + 40 f2.8 with me. Would've much prefered just one walkabout lens rather than changing back and forth. Rarely used the wide angle at 20mm. Gotta sell the 20-35 and 70-200 now (will upgrade to the IS version at some point). Keeping the 40 because it was cheap as chips and is adorable + pretty sharp.

I have my heart set on ordering the 16-35 F4 L IS next week, have been considering it for a while, it's a great achievement from canon, such great edge to edge sharpness.

I did tell myself that I wont be buying anymore glass now until I see what direction Canon take with there bodies. However, my lens collection has a huge gap in the ultra wide focal range. The widest I have is the 24mm end of a 24-105, it's just not wide enough. I have a strong feeling that my 24-105 will be often left at home once the 16-35 joins the bag.

I was tempted briefly by the Samyang 14mm f2.8, but it definitely won't be as flexible (it being a prime and a no go for use with filters), which means it's likely to not get much use.

Used to store my film in my Dads fishing bait fridge is his garage, on the odd occasion I'd open a box to find a random maggot in the bottom!
