The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

How are you getting on with the D500 and D5 ?

I had every intention of getting a D5 then just didn't have the time to justify it, now I'm getting the urge to get one again but the D500 is getting good reviews.

It's just something to accompany my D810 for wildlife and sports mainly but my mate bought a Canon 1DX to go with his 5D III and now uses the 1DX most of the time now so I'm thinking I may be better off sticking the the FF.

Get the D500, seriously. Forget the D5 if you are only wanting a 2nd camera for wildlife/sports.

Been hankering after one of these 150-600mm for months now, they look fantastic. What are you attaching both the lenses to? I've got the 17-50 f/2.8 on my D7200 and it's a great lens. Shooting an Uncle's party tomorrow so I can give it a proper whirl.

I use it on a D7200 but I've also used it on a D7000/D7100 and it's brilliant.

Stealth Gear 1 man chair hide, perfect for the garden, just waiting a bit for the wildlife to accept it.
Seems better made than the Ameristep Doghouse I had some years ago, one UK winter ruined it!

My third Sony RX1 arrived this morning, sold the first due to money issues, sold the second to fund a Leica Q which I sold last month so this time I intend to keep it!

Wait... what... you're nuts. :p

Haha I bought them used each time and made a profit on the first one so actually worked out quite well.

I've got this one with <1k frames, 1 year warranty and the EVF for $1800NZD (about 900 quid in proper money) so it's not a bad deal.

The Leica Q was lovely but the IQ was actually behind the RX1 and whilst the handling was great and the AF was miles better than the RX1, I just couldn't justify having $7k worth of camera when I was using my Fuji X-Pro2 more often and I was missing the compactness (and IQ) of the Sony.

But yes I am also nuts :D

Not that I know of. They're white for a reason; to keep fluorite elements cool.

You learn something every day; thanks.

Lol tats the tripe that canon pedal to justify what is a clear marketing device, if it really made that much difference everyone would do it, thousands of the things end up wrapped in dark coloured neoprene without any effect on image quality what so ever!

Wrong.

Many of the white lenses that Canon make employ Flourite elements. These expand in heat. They have design tolerances.

Heat might not be much of a problem here in the UK, but in some parts of the world it is an issue.

BTW, Sony and Pentax also have white lenses in their line ups. Olympus used to have white OM series Telephotos. Typically they're used in the longer focal lengths.

One last thing - Nikon? They do certain lenses in white too

AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 28-70mm f/2.8D IF-ED
AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G IF- ED
AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4D IF-ED
Nikkor 400/2.8, 500/4 and 600/4 are also available in white.

So guess what? They're all doing it.

None of that proves that it isn't a marketing tactic. Plenty of long focal length lenses that are black allow focusing past infinity by a tiny amount to allow for heat-related expansion also.

Reality is that it's probably a bit of both at the very least. Or, it was at first a technically superior way of dealing with heat, but now it's entirely a marketing tactic as white lenses have become famous and technical advances have moved on.

Also, none of those Nikon lenses are current. They've all been discontinued or replaced with newer versions only available in black. I think only Canon, Pentax (only the 560mm) and Sony are still selling any white lenses.

Why such an aggressive response?

This basically.

I do think they look cool in white though :)

It's not aggressive just stating my opinion on the white lens nonsense! It's a look at me marketing ploy like red rings and adding the model number to the camera strap! The heat thing is a convenient explanation to make people feel better about it, I'd love to see the sales figures if the offered them in both colours or a side by side comparison in a desert!

I've never read a white L series manual but does it tell you not to wrap it in a neoprene cover as it will over heat?
