The New Stargate Universe Thread

I've been finding it annoying that the show has been all about the trials and tribulations of the crew and sod all about the ship, it's mission and the technology. The Kenos are hardly worth all the attention they get and I find the majority of the characters whiney and annoying.

Pretty much the only reason why I watch it is for lack of any hard Sci-Fi out there...

Agreed. I was all ready to stop watching after the first half of this weeks episode. I'm sorry but I watch these shows to see spaceships, lasers, people being eaten/implanted/impregnated by aliens, stuff that makes me go "wow".

If I wanted to watch a half assed murder investigation I'd be watching "Murder She Wrote" with the missus, not SG-U.

Hopefully Rush being stranded will be a turning point, because I'm fed up watching at least half of each weeks episode on fast forward as its so much cack filler. This show has so much potential. :(

The way I see it, the producers of the show had 2 options:

1. They continue with the original formula of SG1, SGA. But if they do this, then the question is raised: why create another show? Why not just continue with Stargate Atlantis?

2. They totally revamped the SG franchise and create something totally different to SG1 and SGA. This has become a bit of a soap opera/drama with a Sci Fi back drop. If you notice there is very little technology, no aliens, few special fx, no battles, etc. Even the ship which is super advanced, is hardly ever explored (we only ever see Rush pressing a few button on a touch screen). The main driver for the show seems to be the drama. The fact that it is being held on a big space ship is almost immaterial.

The format of the show could well suit people who have no interest in Sci Fi, but want to watch a drama or soap opera. Perhaps the producers feel that this could be key to making the show a mainstream hit, competing with the likes of other mainstream dramas that we see on the telly, gaining high viewing figures.

It's like when someone asks me wouldn't it be cool to travel back in time. Errrr no. Going into the future to see all the crazy tech they will have would be far far better!

Damn straight.

Have you seen some of the episodes of SG1 where they visit the Tollen homeworld? Now that society was perhaps the most advanced that SG1 travelled to. Obviously the ASGard were the most advanced, but we never got to see many of their gizmos.

Good episode and why oh why is it so long till the next one.

they wont do away with rush, as you saw him get up at the end of the episode. If they were goign to get rid of him, they wouldn't of cut back to him.

Semi agree, you still have to like Sc-fi though. For me it's he best SG there is. Sg1 was watchable but only if nothing else was on and Atlantis was just ****, not only have they taken it in a new direction to change it up, they are trying to attract new watchers.

As far as I am concerned this week's episode was the straw that broke the camel's back. Whilst I have a vague curiosity about Rush's fate this is vastly outweighed by my shear irritation at how dull SGU is. I have no interest in watching a soap opera in space. I won't tune in again. This from a die-hard SciFi fan.

... Atlantis was just ****, ...

Awww, how can you say that?

Atlantis was great. I loved it. It was the only hardcore space based sci fi show on the telly until last year.

How can you not love the 3 part episode at the end of Season1, when atlantis went up against the Wraith?

How can you not like the episode where virtually all the known protagonists formed an alliance to once and for all wipe out the replicator planet? That is one of my all time favourite episodes of any show.

Given that you feel that SG is bad, would you care to mention some shows you do rate highly?

Just everything about it from eh acting onwards. i haven't watched all episodes, it's to cringe worthy.

SG it's self isn't bad. The film is great SG1 is perfectly watch able. But Universe I actually record and watch and Atlantis I avoid.

24, heroes, BSG (new+old), firefly

The problem with atlantis is that it got very samey after the 1st season, there is only so many times you can be caught by the wraith :(

24 - the first 3 seasons were unmissable. But after that, I found it became a little repetitive. I've watched every single episode so far and will watch Day8 in 2010, but it reached its peak in season 2/3.

heroes - great. I love it. It did lose its way ins season2, but it came back with a vengence. Such a shame that Peter's powers have been so limited.

BSG (new) - this show started out great. Then last year, it became extraordinarily tedious. I stopped watching it and never bothered watching the last 12 episodes.

Firefly - the biggest travesty in SciFi TV is the cancelling of this show. Why it was never commissioned for a 2nd season is beyond me. I loved Serenity.

I do agree with that. They should've called them something completely different. When we were first introduced to the human replicators, I was very confused as to how they related to the spiders. I mean, there wasnt any intermediate replicator - in SG1 they went straight from spider like creatures, to full blown humanoids. There didn't seem to be any intermediate creation.

Just watched episode 10 now.

It was really good I thought. Really don't like Rush now though, it's like they have written him to be like Rodney from Atlantis, but he hardly saves / solves anything and is even more of a **** than Rodney is. Why would you even start a conflict in that situation. If he's so smart he would have realised Young worked it out when he asked the others to leave them and they would catch up.

I'm gonna say different, my guess is that Rush will get the ship going and instead of catching up with Destiny, he will go to the next planet they stop at and wait for them. Will be interesting to see how everyone reacts.

When will this IOA **** stop as well, it's so silly.

Is it me or don't they say what happened to Franklin...?

Is episode 11 really coming out in April?!?

Are you talking about the Atlantis humanoid replicators? As the Atlantis replicators where created by the ancients as a weapon , while the Spider like Replicators where created by a android girl called reese as a toy which got out of controll , these evoled by using the nananites of reece to create the human stlye replicators in SG1 but are completly unrelated to the Atlatis replicators.

I'm talking about the replicators encountered by SG1 in around season6 (I think). When they went to a planet, entirely covered in replicator blocks. They went from spider form to humanoid form with no intermediate steps that we know of.

Incidentally, that episode where Jack Shepherd kills Reese has to rank as one of the best SG1 episodes Ive seen. That, and 'The Fifth Race', where we are finally introduced to the Asgard.

that was due to a "time dialation" device or summin which they reversed iirc (turned it from slowing time to speeding it up) so the...i dunno... thousands of years (?) to them where only days to sg1. we didnt really need to see the bits inbetween...

It was actually the reverse.

The replicators developed, in private, into humanoids, very quickly.

The ASGard picked up on this and developed a time dilation device to slow down time for the replicators, while those outside the field, will see time going as normal. This would mean that 1000 years would pass for humans, while only a second would pass for the replicators. Unfortunately, the replicators found a way to break free of this.

The development of the replicators had already taken place, before the time dilation field was put in place.
