The Nokia N80

Went into town today to try get the N80 car holder and every single phone shop kept askin to have a play with the phone :p

Still didnt get one though :(

Right well seeing as ive had this phone now for a few days, i have some more opinions on what i think of it.

Tbh its a nice phone but there are a few major quirks that i dont really like about it. First of all the battery life is terrible especially if you have the screen set to the brightest. If its set anything lower the screen looks dull and not very impressive...could be that the themes on the phone are poor and they are tbh. Second of all, probably because this is my first slide phone, im having trouble getting used to texting and calling etc etc...but thats not a major problem. Just everytime you want to text you have to open up the slide.
This phone is slow software wise, im not very impressed with the amount of time it takes to open up some apps tbh. Its a bit faster than my 6680 but i can see this causing me grief especially if theres a lot of saved texts, pics, videos or music files etc.
Its also quite bulky as mentioned before but that again isnt such a biggie for me as i tend to carry my phone in my hand anyways.
I think the biggest concern i have of this phone is the fact the buttons arent situated very well and they are also quite small so woulnt be suitable for someone with large fingers. To me it looks like nokia didnt really think about setting the buttons up right to make it easy to use. First of all the nav key is a good idea but the other buttons are far too close to each other and if your not careful you can end up pressing the wrong button. The green and red call buttons are completely in the wrong place if you ask me personally. Plus when the keypads lights come on, it comes up in a blue colour...so makes it hard to see where the green call key button is. Also the backlight just seems to come on and off when it likes....not impressed as sometimes i cant see what the screen is saying ie it asks you to unlock the keys but because the screen isnt lit up...its hard to see what the phone is saying lol.
Also ive noticed on this phone is the camera, yes its brilliant...as its 3mp but unlike my 6680 where if i opened the camera i could just press the nav button to the right and it would switch into video mode. Now with the n80 you turn on the camera and then you press on the option button and then from there you can get into the video mode. So it makes it a little bit more difficult to get into it and if u wanted to take a random on the spot video clip...lets put it this way...it takes longer to do so as u have to go into the the submenu.
Also the slide doesnt activate the camera, would have been much better if nokia had put the camera underneath the slide ie as in making a cover for the camera. But you have a silver button on the side that activates the camera so all is not lost.

One of the things i do love about this phone is it talks to you when you get a call, how cool is that...yes the voice sounds ghey but for instance if you have a contact called mum and she rings, the phone will talk to u and say mum when it rings...seriously cool that bit.

Other than that its a nice phone, im sure with time i could get over these little quirks but tbh for the price i paid i dont think its worth it. I wouldnt stop anyone from buying the phone as its very nice IF you can overcome these little quirks.

As for me??, ill be sending mine back as im not that impressed by the phone itself, i could give it time and see if i can get used to it but tbh i prefer my SE W810i over this phone.

Interesting views, i still think i shall get one as i only have a 7600 at the mo which is VERY slow at opening its applications folder - what little of them it can run :p
The sliding phone thing will need getting used to but hey i never had a normal keypadded phone before - and as the 7600 has a split keypad i have just gotten used to that ...
Anyopne else who got one have any views ? :)

I got my black N80 yesterday. I have had to charge it 3 times so far (in just over 24 hours) but that's because I've been messing around with it a lot (including a lot of Wifi use). The new Web application is great (the new Nokia browser) but it has some major problems. It often reports that it is out of memory, or simply closes down while in the middle of using it.

The build quality is generally good, although the battery cover on mine was quite loose - I fixed this by using some small bits of paper under the cover. The phone is definitely pretty chunky, especially when in the open position and you're using the keys just under the screen (which is the fattest part of the phone you'd ever be using). The camera, although the shots start to look a little flakey on your computer screen, look truly amazing on the phone's display. The gallery application is quite neat too with the way you scroll through all the photos in it.

Hmmm so it does suffer from memory problems then??, how did you manage to resolve it??.

Will have to try it myself and see if mine suffers from this problem.

I also kinda have a loose slide mechanism..ie when its closed it moves slightly from side to side.

Battery life is terrible on mine, charged it last night and jusyt this min it decided to conk out:(....i hardly made any calls...again i think its the screen brightness is causing it to suck all the battery power...will have to cut it down.

think i'll be picking one of these up tomorrow if i can find a cpw that has any, which i think unlikely. Only thing worrying me is the poor battery life, as i'm used to not having to charge my phone everyday, but from what i've read the n80 will need charging daily.

In all honesty i don't mind charging it daily - i have my phone charging most nights anyways so it won't be anything different in that sense ... still it running out in under a day would rather annoying - just gotta be careful with how you use it if you know you will be expecting a call or what have you :)

Remember, the guys reporting the low battery life have proberly been playing with there lovely sparkly new phone ever since it arrived. Basically im not saying it has a long battery life but it will surely last longer that a day under normal use.

True i have been playing with mine for quite some time since ive had it. One way to keep your battery charged up is by turning the screen brightness to either the default or one up from default. Default tends to be imho a bit dark and dull. Also turn off Bluetooth, mines always on and another way i suppose is turn the power save mode on as well...can be anything from a min to 30 mins etc.

Im hoping the second charge will condition the battery. I had the same prob with my 6680..lovely gorgeous screen when you had the brightness turned right up but boy did it suck the life out of the battery.

Other than that id still recommend it as its a phone with plenty of features, one of the main annoying bits for me is that if you open the slide up then close it, it asks you to lock the keys if u like...so you do so as u dont want to have buttons being pushed if its in your back pocket etc etc. The problem comes is when you go to use the phone...pressing all the buttons on the front brings up the message...do you want to unlock the keypad....which is all good and well but no backlight so if your using this phone in the darkness or where there is a lack of light then you cant really see what the screen is saying:p. Also i would imagine it does the same if its in extremely sunny conditions or bright conditions etc. But i dont think that would be a problem. Pressing the on/off button seems to bring up the backlight so that you can see the screen lol. or opening the slide tends to bring up the backlight on the phone.

I think this is probably due to the fact that the phone unlike the 6680 and 6630 before it does not have a light sensor at the front of the phone. Shame really as putting a light sensor in would have adjusted the backlight accordingly.

As time goes on, im getting more and more used to its little quirks and tbh it isnt that bad as i originally made it out to be. I think ill hang onto it as the WLAN will come in handy for me, god knows how long the battery will last before it conks out though lol:p.
If anything im going to get the p990 and then decide on which one to keep and sell the other one.

Just found out some interesting information that you will find important.

The N80 uses the 3rd edition of the Symbian OS. The 3rd Edition can't run ANY Series60 apps

Wrong... It will still run some of the apps

Not very many of them I admit but it will run some

According to Nokia's own specs it does have the light sensor - its just below the N80 logo on the front of the phone.

See here and click on "Phone Demos" and then select "Connectors and Parts"

Looks like im going to order my n80 on O2 tonight then but a few quick questions first,

Im currently with Orange and way out of my 12 month contract which I would need to cancel, is it just a matter of calling them and asking for my PAC code then the contract will end before the next payment is due?

On my current contract I use Orangecare which is brilliant and means I can have my phone replaced within 24 hours at minimal cost, do O2 offer the same kind of service? it seems the Onestopphoneshop insurance has a hefty excess.

One last thing, is it still possible with O2 to change the contract to a lower tier after 6 months like it has been with Orange?

Thanks for any help

Orange also have this phone I believe (onestopphoneshop have orange deals for it at least) could be interesting to phone up orange under the premis of leaveing (stateing you want the N80 for the reason) and seeing if they will cut you a deal.

T-mobile offered me a very tempting deal to stay with them, line rental for £5 a month on my current contract, which is £30 a month. Sadly the allure of the N80 was to much.

On a happy note mine arrived today in the post! currently chargeing her up as I type this out. Ordered late Thuresday.

Hmmm verrrrryyyyy interesting, thanks for that:). Having a look at my black one there seems to be nothing of the sort on my phone. Where that link says there should be a light sensor...well on mine its an LED which flashes blue on and off if the power save function is on. So either they didnt put it on the final versions or they messed up somewhere along the line. Could be that model thats shown on the nokia's site is not a uk spec phone.

Could anyone else who has this phone please check to see if they have a light sensor on the phone??.

Looks like i am definitely sending this phone back, it crashed badly this morning and the only way i could get it back up and running is by physically taking the battery out...it wouldnt shut down the stupid thing. To me it looks like Nokia didnt upgrade the cpu in this phone...its struggling to open apps now and making calls takes about a min or so before it opens up the contacts menu:(.

Looks like ill be waiting for the P990 instead now, hopefully it will be a hell of a lot faster than this phone. Nokia really hasnt got a clue when it comes to making their series60 phones faster and more efficient.
