The Nokia N80

Didn't Nokia use a 300MHz processor inside the N80? Its up from the 200Mhz (or around that) in the 6630/6680/N70 so its not good to hear that its still slow.

Dont know Guru, if they have then it must be a very slow processor. Could be that the internal memory is slowing things down somewhat. But then i have nothing stored on my internal memory, everything including contacts, and other stuff are all on my mem card. I have around 36mb of internal memory free.
Actually thinking about it, why couldnt nokia increase the bloody internal memory on this unit???. At least 80mb would have been sufficient...personally and correct me if im wrong...i think that a lot of these crashes and slowing down is due to the internal memory being so low.

Saying that the web browser is amazing, i hope that the p990 has something to this.

Anyways phoned up the place i got it from and im sending it back...too many small niggles that are narking me off about this phone. This phone had the chance to be a killer phone with the features it had but sadly its being let down by silly and stupid niggles. Hell even the contact voice cant save this phone ie when a contact rings you the phone actually tells you who it is lol:p...sounds gay as hell but nice little feature though.

Looks like i am definitely sending this phone back, it crashed badly this morning and the only way i could get it back up and running is by physically taking the battery out...it wouldnt shut down the stupid thing. To me it looks like Nokia didnt upgrade the cpu in this phone...its struggling to open apps now and making calls takes about a min or so before it opens up the contacts menu:(.

Looks like ill be waiting for the P990 instead now, hopefully it will be a hell of a lot faster than this phone. Nokia really hasnt got a clue when it comes to making their series60 phones faster and more efficient.
Your feedback is appreciated Spawn - have been waiting for the P990 for ages, and my patience was begining to fade after having a quick play with an N80 the other day.
I must admit I am a bit of an SE man - haven't had a Nokia in years, although I was very pleasantly suprised by the build quality on the N80 I played with - seemed very solid and the parts seemed tight fitting and well engineered - not like the Nokia I remember of old.
I think however your feedback has prompted me to stick with my original plan of the P990 - there are certains things I am just not sure I could live with with the N80 - not least the lack of readily available or user updateable firmware given the apparent bugs with it and the reported poor battery life.

No problem mate, im just giving my honest opinion about this phone. Dont get me wrong its a lovely phone, well biult and has some amazing features on it but nokia have let it down imho. There are just too many little niggles for my liking...yes i could live with it and get used to it and i am but for the price i paid sim free its not worth that much...if it was £300-£400 then i wouldnt have a problem with it but the price isnt a good reflection on the phone.

As i said before its a shame that nokia couldnt make this phone faster, its this main gripe thats put me off this phone. Some people will say oh its not that slow but i havent got anything on my internal mem except for the main files which the phone uses etc...all other files are on my mem card and yet its slow as a snail. Although marginally better than my 6680 though.

Like you i was an SE man for a fair number of yrs but then i went back to nokia and they arent terrible phones..the 6680 almost made go off nokia for life....i then decided to wait for the n80 and it hasnt lived up to my expectations. The fact that they dont allow you to do the firmware upgrades in the confort of your own home shows how far behind they are compared to SE, SE allow you to do firmware upgrades yourself...yes nokia will probably say that theres a pretty good chance of screwing up the phone but every SE phone i have ever had and did the firmware upgrade...i never had any problems with it.

Tbh i have a SE W810i which i got from tmobile as ive just recently joined up with them etc and its a superb phone...much faster and easier to use than the n80...fair enough the n80 is a smartphone but tbh it doesnt do a very good job of being one. Only thing that i dont like about the W810 is the operator branding that tmobile put on there but thats easily solved.

But sadly as much as this n80 looks the biz, im sending it back and will wait for the p990 to be released...i just really hope to god that SE havent messed that up in some way or another but im hoping they wont...as the p800/900/910i were stonking phones tbh.

Anyone know when CPW (online store) are getting the black one in stock?
Ok then, well i just phoned them and they said they should have them back in stock in the next 7 days but could be as much as 14 days.

Thanks for the in depth analysis Spawn, muchly appreciated.

Don't think I'll bother with the N80 then as those niggles would drive me mad.

Looks like I'm waiting for the E60, P990, MDA Vario II or the SE Walkman phone with jog dial and touch screen (can't remember the model number!).

Probably the W950i if im not mistaken, nice phone if its the one that i saw on some website....4gb flash storage and looks to be a very nice phone.

Personally im going to hang on for the P990 now, hopefully it will be out in the next month or so...

Its in your profile settings , select the profile u want then personalise...then scroll down to say callers name and enable.

But if you have a ring tone it wont be that loud, its better if you have a silent ringing tone ie I have mine set to silent but with vibrate and you should be able to hear the synthesised voice.

ARGGHHHH FFS 3 times this goddamn phone has crashed on me:mad:. WTF is up with nokia??...im just hoping this could be a duff unit. I just went to open my network connections and its crashed big time...stupid phone...not only that i only charged the friggin thing last night and already without even making any decent phone calls, its down to one bar.....sooo close to smashing this phone to pieces tbh.

Oh well back to my crappy old 6680..at least that didnt crash so much:p lol

I think im going to give this phone another try tbh, going to send it back to the place i got it from and get them to send me another phone and see if it also suffers from this crashing and slowness problem. It could be that my phone is duff...just my bloody luck as well. If the new one is just as bad then im getting my money back, i wont be buying such utter crap again from nokia.

/end rant

Anyone else suffering from random crashes, low battery and slow menus like i am??. Would be interesting to see if the people who have this phone are also suffering from these same probs that i am.

cheers spawn i got it. haha that rocks lol :D

No slow menus here, no crashes as of yet, sorry to here about your problems but i charged mine for 24 hours without playing with it and Its been on 3 days with camera use etc and it still has 2 bars.

Ahhh looks like my unit seems to a buggy/duff unit as other forums that i have posted on have more or less said the same thing about their phones.

Cheers mate and glad you got the voice thingy sorted out :).

At the moment the gps software probably wont work from what i have been reading as developers havent ported it over for the 3rd edition of the S60 3rd edition software on Symbian OS . But i would hope soon there will be quite a few apps soon.

You can get tomtom for the S60 symbian software yes. I wouldn't see a problem with it though, you might want to check tomtom and see if they list the n80. It works a treat on the n70 :)

It most likely wont work as this is the 3rd edition of the series60 software;)...in fact i would be very surprised if it did.

Gah it now says "pre-order now for delivery commencing week beginning 15th may" :( - ordered late sunday, seems i either missed their latest stock allocation or the site isn't quite up to date ...

Hmmm verrrrryyyyy interesting, thanks for that. Having a look at my black one there seems to be nothing of the sort on my phone. Where that link says there should be a light sensor...well on mine its an LED which flashes blue on and off if the power save function is on. So either they didnt put it on the final versions or they messed up somewhere along the line. Could be that model thats shown on the nokia's site is not a uk spec phone.

LOL no, that's both a light sensor and LED.

just ordered one on upgrade through cpw. Quite impressed as I got it for free, which I wasn't expecting. Bit worried about the slowness, but the issue was forced by the fact that I dropped my p910 down the stairs at the weekend and now it doesn't receive text messages, so had no choice but to upgrade.

If needs be I'll just wait until the p990 is available and use my insurance to cancel the new contract early and take a new one out with the p990i.

I've got another S60 Third Edition phone, with the same CPU. I haven't noticed any serious slow-down (especially compared to my 7610!) and contacts takes a maximum of 2 seconds to open, if it's not already running. Even the reviews of the E61, etc. have commented on how much of an improvement in performance there's been.

Maybe there's just a few duff phones going around?
