!!!! The OCUK Martial Arts Thread !!!!

Hi all, nice thread, just been reading,

used to do choi kwon do, (orange belt) did a bit of jiu jitsu, and considering aikido, (although rethinking due to comments in thread)

I'm 6'6, not particularly athletic at the moment although working on it, not the world's fastest mover, although reasonable balance, also looking to start work as a door man in near future, so restraints would be nice, although not essential.

am in the swansea area,
was giving thought to this http://www.swan.ac.uk/AU/aikido/

Cheers

Tom

Hi, Ive just been reading the thread too, the Sports section completely passed me until now, and I was glad to see a MA thread, being a martial artist myself. If you are looking for restraints, then personally I wouldnt recommend Aikido, you should consider going back to Jiu Jitsu. Just my opinion though, I dont know what is available in Swansea, have a look round though. Obviously with the Choi Kwang Do you probably know how to strike.

CKD taught plenty of striking, and (sensible) kicks, (ie no silly heights, and no aeriel stuff)

One of the other ones that caught my eye is sambo, but what's it like?

Sambo/Sombo/Cambo is one art I have always wanted to train in.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambo_(martial_art)

That breifly explains it (better than I can, or can be bothered to). Do you have classes near you? Its definitely worth a look. I personally dont know much about the system.....Ive had a book on order from amazon for months!! UFC fighter Oleg Taktarov is a russian sambo champion.

Can anyone recommend any martial arts near Wallingford, Oxfordshire?

I am looking to take one up with a good mate of mine but am not sure which. Locally there is jujitsu and tai kwon do but could look further afield. Which is best?

I did Aikido for four years, but was undisciplined and didn't learn a great deal, though had a great social life. Also tried Kempo Karate and Thai Boxing, but the problem is I liked to give out the damage, but not take it... I'm a big weed and bruise / take pain easily. Probably why I stuck with Aikido so long, as its fairly painless (apart from ridiculous flying break falls, \o/ )

Haven't done anything for about 2.5 years...

lo all have just started jiu jitsu and have really enjoyed my first training session, learnt how to fall from kneeling and standing, did wrist locks 1 and 3 and other wrist locks that i dont know the number to, did some throwing ie left hand on other guys chin and taking them off balance and a swift kick to the shin, called ko..........something. could you recoomend me a site which would tell me the basic japanese terms and all of the moves and what is required for the gradings. i have also gone and bought a Ge (sp), would someone tell me a site that would slowly show me how to tie the belt properly.

really enjoyed the first session except one of the blue belt girls is deaf and chose not to see my tap out and really hurt my wrist but she smiled in a very knowing kind of way! lol, oh well ill get my own back sometime soon when im a little more in the know.

I did a freestyle karate jutsu for 2 years, based on aikido, wado ryu and shotokan. It was far better than the other classes i'd had a look at as it was focused entirely on practicality rather than ensuring your stance was millimetre perfect. Unfortunately I've been out for a year, as the first casualty in the instructors 30 year teaching career.

An over enthusiastic BB managed to fluff a disarm, and shattered my humerus in an arm bar, which allowed my arm to hinge in an unfamiliar direction around 2 inches above my elbow. Unfortunately the hospital wouldnt pin it (break too close to nerve bundle to right hand for them to operate) so I just had it set, and was in a cast for 3 months. Then 6 weeks getting the muscles reconditioned to allow a full range of movement again.

I'm at the stage now where i'll be restarting soon, though the class has now moved to another venue that could make travel damned awkward. There is Andy Normans new Keysi academy a few minutes away though, so I may give that a look over...

depends what you want mate.....striking.....grappling......combination of both......mixed martial arts.

My personal philosophy is that if you want to get good and well versed with everything, dont cross train to begin with. I started with grappling, and moved over to striking. Do you know what federation the tkd school is? I recommend ITF over WTF, but all schools will have a different syllabus.

I would like a bit of both, grappling and striking. Its just to build confidence really and for self defence.
I think I will go to a session of both just to watch and see if I fancy doing it.

Did you know panthro in The ThunderCats was a martial arts expert lol :p

For those that do Jui Jitsu how fit do you need to be as a beginner, I was thinking of taking classes but im kinda worried im not fit enough. Maybe if I started it would motivate me to do more exercise.

From your post (blue belt, wrist locks 1 and 3) it sounds like you went to a TJF affiliated club. Take a look at www.planetjitsu.com There's an excellent list of all the throws/locks on the syllabus and videos for most of them, plus an excellent forum. :)

has anyone ever had a go of kuk sool won ?

I posted this on another thread:

Its a Korean martial art, but it isnt a form of TKD. Im not clued up much on Kuk Sool Won, but its basically a modern approach martial arts system to incorporate many of the ancient Korean martial arts. Its actually a copyrighted name. It includes extensive weapons training, as well as some locks and throws, on top of the striking.
