The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

Im loving the 18yr Glenfiddich. Would love the 30yr old but aint got a spare 200 quid! Has anyone sampled the 21yr glenfiddich? Tempted to buy a bottle now on the whiskyexchange.

a friend got 101 whiskeys to try before you die for his secret santa and it speaks very highly of the 30yr Glenfiddich - i'm very tempted i have to say but £200 is allot of money!

It is a lot of money but when you taste it you can see why. I got it as a present, dunno if I'd spend that much myself unless it was for a special occaision.

I'm tempted to get a 21yr Glennfiddich now after tasting both the 18yr and 30yr.

G/F got the 30yr Whiskyonline.com and it came with a sample of Aultmore 36yo and that was very nice indeed. At £100 it's still expensive, but I think I'd be able to justify that:)

Anyone tried the English Whisky Co. stuff? I've been given a couple of generous measures by a colleague, one of which is Chapter 9, and one of The Balvenie 12 YO. I have a rotten cold and it's clearing me out nicely. :D

The Balvenie has too sweet an aftertaste for me really, but is lovely and smooth. The Chapter 9 is to my pallette a good deal more drinkable, being lighter and with a fantastically smokey aftertaste.

I'm not much of a whisky drinker yet, but certainly want to try more.

I've only ever tried Teachers, Bells, Jameson, Jack Daniels and Jim Bean (and Southern Comfort, not sure if that counts though) and I didn't like any of them neat but they were OK with a mixer. Is there a noticeable improvement in flavour with "better" whiskeys/whiskys? Would I be wasting my money spending £40/£50 on a small bottle of something a little more exotic?

Completely different.

I tend to point people towards the Whisky Flavour Map to avoid being biased about any of my favourites, but you could try a Glenkinchie or Glenmorangie.

Just finishing off my bottle of Bunnahabhain, impulse buy a few weeks back. Could fit the bill too, actually, though not sure it's something I'd take to immediately if I wasn't a whisky fan.

Thanks for the link.

Glenlivet 12 y/o, Glenfiddich 12 y/o and Glenmorangie 10 y/o sound like they might fit the bill. I've got access to them through the pub I work at so I'll give them a try. Cheers.

Okay gang, looking for a little bit of advice. Going to try an Irish whiskey but I really have no idea what to do. Don't want to spend too much to start with, so is Jamesons any good? Bushmills perhaps? I haven't come across a kind of whisk(e)y that I don't like yet so really I'm open to any suggestions. Buying this alongside a nice Scotch to keep me going. :)

Cheers.

Recently had the pleasure of trying Four Roses bourbon. Absolutely lovely, and very reasonably priced.

It JUST fails to knock Woodford Reserve off the top of my list.

Had a Tobermory (not sure on the year) at the weekend. Was 2 minutes from the distillery! It wasn't great. Easily the sweetest whisky I've ever tasted. As soon as it touched my lips, it tasted like someone had dipped the glass in sugar. Was most bizarre. Very noticeable chocolate notes crept up quickly and lingered after the swallow. I wouldn't recommend.

Try the 12 year old. Its smoother than the regular Jamesons. I bought a bottle when it was on offer at Sainsbury's before last Xmas. Its not on sale at all of their branches though. :)

I'll bear that in mind next time, thanks. :)

I didn't end up buying it myself because someone had seen me having a look around and decided to get a bottle for me, it's just the regular stuff though. Also got a bottle of Glenlivet 15 French Oak Reserve. Lovely. :D

Haven't had a chance to read the whole thread yet but will do at some point.

Just took delivery of some whiskies - most of which I haven't tried before so thought I'd post my thoughts. Here's a pic:
