The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

How have I missed this thread!!!

I have 8 or 9 bottles to review from the past year but I'll start with Woodford Reserve bourbon tonight. Got some good ideas from Christmas spirits from this thread. Anyone know the best place in London to pick up some good malts?

royal mile whiskies london, not sure where abouts it is though , can i ask how you drink your bourbons? neat, water, ice?

thanks

quick tip..Asda have 25% off all whisky

have just picked up their own brand extra special speyside for 13.50 to tide me over till christmas when I will get my 15 year old single cask Balvennie which is reduced from 44 notes to 33.97 for which is an amazing price for what is one of the finest drops you can buy without breaking the bank

Got a bottle of Bulleit bourbon on Friday and finally poured myself a glass just now. This is very easy to drink, tastes much, much better than Jim Beam. Very smooth, little burn and lots of character. Again, I'm rubbish at rating these things so I can't really give scores, but it is definitely a very good drink for the money (£18 for a 70cl bottle). :)

Quick question after seeing this thread and wanting to know a quick answer from someone with the knowledge...

Bought the Mrs brother a bottle of Laphroaig the other day for Xmas as he is partial to it.

Now, when faced with the purchasing decision, we had two options:

One bottle appeared to be standard, 15 year age.
The other, was the same price, but 48% instead of 40% and labeled as "Double Casket" ?

We went with the double casket as we didn't know much of a difference other than amount of alcohol and that the double casket looked slightly darker.

What difference is there likely to be? Her Bro likes really Petey whiskey, did we make the right decision?

I cannot find information on Laphroaig "Double Casket" but by the sounds of it, some of the whisky will be matured in one style of cask and some in the other. This will give the whisky a different flavour to that of the standard Laphroaig but will, most likely, still be peaty. If it is darker, it most likely has more sherry matured whisky in it than the standard.
Each taste is individual so he "might" not like it but I believe its a good idea, he likes Laphroaig so you are giving him another one of their expressions to try!

Ok Father Christmas has been and I've got a 30 year old Glenfiddich!

To be honest it's the nicest thing I've ever tasted.

Nose: Definate smell of Chocolate

Taste: Very smooth, strong taste of chocolate and figs.

Aftertaste: Long, warming after taste with no bitterness.

All in all a very special drink that deserves to be opened only on special occaisions, definately not a drink to have on a regular night when you just fancy a dram.

Overall:100

I don't drink the stuff anymore, generally preferring Barbados and other Caribbean rums these days but back in the day I used to enjoy the smoky Islays:
-Bowmore
-Bunnahabhain
-Laphroaig

All 10 year olds, very good indeed....Slainte :D

Im loving the 18yr Glenfiddich. Would love the 30yr old but aint got a spare 200 quid! Has anyone sampled the 21yr glenfiddich? Tempted to buy a bottle now on the whiskyexchange.

a friend got 101 whiskeys to try before you die for his secret santa and it speaks very highly of the 30yr Glenfiddich - i'm very tempted i have to say but £200 is allot of money!

Tried the smokehead on new years and loved and regretted it at the same time. Its like a good hot chilli sauce. Packed full of amazing flavour but abuses the palate so much you end up with it sitting with you for the next couple of hours!

Our Christmas whisky drinking session included the following;
Dalwhinnie 15 year old (wasn't as good as I remember it being a couple of years ago but it was still very tasty.
Glenmorangie 10 year old
Balvenie 12 Year Old limited edition #2 (It was the first time I had tried Balvenie and it was very enjoyable and my favourite of the lot.)

All of these were enjoyed with a Cuban cigar. :D
