The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

What's the deal with the Talisker? Not seen a bottle like that before. The Aberlour is a staple on my shelf.

Ordered a bottle of An Cnoc 12 today, never had it before. Will let you know how it goes.

First up, Aberlour 10yo. I placed an online groceries order with Tesco the other day and ordered a bottle of Talisker. they didn't have any and some genius decided this was a suitable replacement  I accepted it as I've had it before and it's a passable whisky.

Aberlour 10yo Highland malt. 40%
Nose: Slight spice, citrus, sweet toffee. 18
Taste: As above with a bit of oaky vanilla. 16
Finish: Longish - fairly smooth and slightly sweet. 20
Balance: Decent enough whisky if a little plain and unremarkable. 18
Overall 72.

Its a distillers edition - Finished in Amoroso sherry casks. really looking forward to that.

Had the An Cnoc a few times (actually had a glass in the pub last night). Jolly nice whisky.

Ah right, that does sound lovely.

The An Cnoc was only £19.99 as well. A price you really can't argue with!

Bladnoch 20yo Lowland malt. 40%
Nose: Slight spice, grass, floral - very fresh. 22
Taste: Spice, chocolate limes (the sweeties) and something familiar I can't quite put a name to at the moment. 22
Finish:Medium and tingly with a hint of bitter chocolate. 18
Balance: Nice fresh tasting whisky. Typical lowland with floral, citrussy notes. 20
Overall 82.

Knockando 18yo Speyside malt. 43%
Nose: Chocolate, slight vanilla. 18
Taste: Slight spice, chocolate, sherry. 20
Finish:Medium mostly chocolate with a hint of fruit. 18
Balance: Slightly disappointing. Was hoping for a bit better from this. Still a decent whisky but not as good as I thought it would be. 18
Overall 74.

Talisker 1999 distiller's edition Skye malt. 45.8%
Nose: Sea spray, slightly smoky, peat, slightly antiseptic. 22
Taste: Sweetish sherry, slight vanilla, peat smoke. 20
Finish: Medium - vanilla fudge. 19
Balance: Nose showed promise but fell down slightly on taste and finish. Still a jolly nice whisky though. 21
Overall 82.

Was saving what I thought would be the best until last and I wasn't wrong.

Lagavulin special release 1994 distiller's edition Islay malt. 43%
Nose: Peat smoke, raisins, antiseptic. 23
Taste: Dry sherry, slight spice, peat smoke, Christmas cake. 23
Finish: Long. Antiseptic, peat, slightly sweet and slightly woody. 22
Balance: I have a weakness for Islay malts matured in sherry casks and this one didn't disappoint. A well balanced, complex whisky. Not the best I've tasted but well up there. 23
Overall 91.

Cracking reviews Stan. Only ever had the Aberlour out of that selection and I'd suggest your reviews are quite apt. Infact, I'm going to pour myself a dram of it now. The Knockando sounds disgusting!
Wish I had the funds to get a decent whisky selection, any chance of a picture or two of yours?

Not much of a collection. I don't tend to have more than a dozen bottles at a time and I've not been as flush lately as I usually am so most of them are "reasonably priced".

Apart from the 5 I've reviewed, I have a bog standard Balvenie Doublewood (almost always have this or the 15yo single cask in the house), bog standard Glenlivet, bog standard 10yo Laphroaig, Triple Wood Laphroaig (really nice whisky), Rich Oak Glenfiddich (not normally a big fan of Glenfiddich but this was a Christmas present and the Rich Oak is a pretty decent expression), Bog standard Dalwhinnie (another stock item) and a bottle of standard Talisker. A lot of them are nearly empty so I'll need to have another shopping spree soon ;)

PS: Enjoy your dram :D

I have just finished a bottle of Glenfiddich Gran Reserva 21 yo and have to say I enjoyed every drop.

The combination of sweet and sour and the particuarly long finish made it an excellent wee drop.

im ashamed to say im drinking bells at the moment. sometimes i feel that i dont appreciate good whiskey after a while, so have a cheap bottle (only cost me £7), to make me enjoy the better stuff.

am a big fan of monkey shoulder, although i only drank it a couple of times at my local. but the first time i had it it was wonderful, i just got attracted by the monkeys on the bottle. ended up drinking too much of it. going to work drunkish the next day, never again.

do love glenfiddich one of the best for the price.

I've got a few Whiskeys to my collection. Unfortunately I had to stop early in the collection due to shortage of funds and me being a poor student.

From memory, I have:

Red Breast 12
Red Breast 15
Jameson
Jameson 12
Jameson Crested Ten
Black Bush

I know I have more but can't remember lol. I hope to get more though but every time I come back home from Uni, I end up opening up the cheapest bottle to have with my dad.

I haven't tried the Red Breast 15 year old yet, I bought it when they were supposed to be rare and not being produced anymore so I got it at a high price. They're now selling cheaply, unfortunately as it looks like they'll be selling them for the unforseen future. I just hope that the bottle I have is from a batch of sought after quality.

My collection isn't really good but I hope to add to it when I get a job :D.
