The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

I'd love to be there nydryl, but never got round to getting a ticket. I understand that there's some occasionally available at the door and if I wasn't working I'd go down and see if any were available but alas I have to work.

Tesco (the new one at the Forge Retail park) do Quarter Cask. I'll check ASDA Toryglen for you tomorrow. It's not currently discounted, think it's around £33 in Tesco. I'll probably be there later today so will confirm.

Lovely, cheers. I'll keep an eye out for offers now I know they stock it. Even at £33 it might be worth the extra walk.

Ah that's a bugger about tickets, I got lucky and picked up a few from Scotch Whisky Auctions on Argyle St. I'll let you know how it goes without rubbing it in!

Also won a bottle of Jura (not sure which expression) yesterday via Twitter which was a nice surprise. Added to the stuff in the cupboard the wee collection is coming along nicely.

If it's the thing with the pennies, I think it's Superstition they're giving away.

PS: £33 is an absolute bargain for Quarter Cask. I've never understood how they can make such a gorgeous whisky for so little money.

It was through Edinburgh City of Literature but if it's Superstition they're giving away with the treasure hunt I'll most likely get the same. Shame, not a huge fan, but it won't go to waste!

I have been profiting from some great deals at my local waitrose over the last couple of months. They were selling the Jameson Select Reserve Small Batch, which normally retails at £35. They had it on a random clearance sale with a price varying from £18 -22. I picked up 3 bottles in the end. I have kept two unopened as potential Christmas presents. By clearance sale, I mean it literally had hand written label on, so i think this was deal specific to this store. It was so cheap I initially thought it might be some kind of in store scam (i.e staff were marking it down so they could buy it cheap), but in reality I suspect they were just trying to clear their whiskey stock in time to make space for their Christmas deals.
Similarly I just picked up a bottle of the Waitrose own brand Irish whiskey for £10, down from £16, also marked as "clearance sale". I didn't have high hopes for it, but it turned out to be perfectly nice, and certainly does not taste remotely like a £10 bottle. I plan on picking up another soon, as it will keep me from drinking the more expensive bottles in my collection! It is made for waitrose by the Cooley distillery who produce a number of highly regarded whiskeys.

Whats it like compared to 18y old?

Haven't tried the 18, but it's head and shoulders above the 10. It gets rave reviews, and is a bargain for the price. If you like Laphroaig then I'd go and get a bottle. Picked mine up for £9 today (but I did have a £20 gift card ;)).
I imagine the 18 would be a bit smoother (as smooth as Laphroaig can go anyway).

Don't know if this can be trusted but here it is anyway:

That's an amazing price for the quality of whisky, good find!

Not sure I could face a dram right now though. I couldn't recommend the whisky festival highly enough. Four hours of getting to try an incredible range of whisky (and a bruichladdich gin!) was just amazing. I'm going to have to sit down when the hangover subsides and try to work out roughly what was drank and put a name the favourites. A thirty year old something or other sticks in my head (black/red box and sherry cask finish?) but the memory is unsurprisingly hazy at best. A lot of googling will be done this week to piece things back together!

I've been wondering about quarter cask. It is a little stronger than the 10 year just from looking at the bottle. I love Laphroaig and if quarter cask is better then I may be tempted.

Odd they note the peat taste goes. I thought that was a defining taste of Laphroaig with the smoke.

On offer in Waitrose now. http://www.waitrose.com/shop/ProductView-10317-10001-54141-Laphroaig+Quarter+Cask
Going to get this.

Heres my bottle of The English Whisky Co Chapter 7

It was a lot lighter in colour than many whiskeys i've tried. Not sure what causes that. The initial taste was a little harsh, although it's been a while since I’ve had any whisky, even longer since I had anything other than a smooth speyside so that may have played it's part.

Once that had gone though the taste was very pleasant if a little short. Could definitely taste the sweetness picked up from the rum casks.

Not sure I’d pick up another bottle once this is finished though considering the cost.

It's more like the 10 than the 18 but as someone who thinks the 10 is rough and not worth buying the quarter cask is at least enjoyable. Imo the 18 is overpriced though very nice to drink, I'd personally rather have two bottles of normal Ardbeg for the same price.

I can confirm the Laphroaig Quarter Cask is £25.20 in store at Waitrose. I got a bottle today.

Edit:
I tried some last night. As you would expect it is very similar to 10 year. The taste is powerful and you get a little sweetness. It also lingers longer. I like this, it is subtly different from 10 year.

Lagvulin is a whisky I have not tried. Interested to know what people think?
