Yea, I love Lagavulin. Been drinking it quite a lot in a whisky pub I frequent.

Going to a whisky tasting tonight hosted by Adelphi. They are an independent bottler, but have just recently began to build a distillery. They are pretty well thought of with some very interesting releases so should be quite a good evening. Only £10 for 6 drams and there's usually 10% off any tried. I was planning on getting one of the travel exclusive Auchentoshans at the end of the month but if anything is good tonight then I'll get one of them instead.
I'll take a picture of the whisky tasted if I remember my camera and give you some thoughts about them tonight. At the very least, I'll have the sheet with the names & ABVs and my very complicated ranking system. I like to rank 1 - 5, and then guess the price and then decide if I'd buy at that price. Works for me.
I was at a bourbon tasting earlier the year, and wrote £45 or something around there for one of the bottles and I'd buy at that. It was £110, I didn't buy. :o

As said, went to that tasting last night held by Adelphi. The woman running it was quite crazy, but it was a good night. The other people at my table all seemed to be in the whisky trade so it was interesting hearing what they were saying about the whiskies.

I wasn't one for notes last night, you can find them yourself. My ranking system changes every week but this tasting we went for A - E. They are only ranked against each other. The best was the Tamdhu 17 Y/O, and it was amazing with water. Avoid Miltonduff 30 Y/O. It's expensive, has no finish and just not very good.

Did I buy anything? No chance, I think the cheapest bottle was around £65. The Invergordon 46 was £70 for a 10cl! Still, £10 for the six drams (plus one more as one guy never turned up to our table) is a total bargain.

Well, Dad's birthday is on the 21st Dec, and I want to get him a decent whiskey as a joint birthday/Christmas treat. He seems to be a particular fan of Abelour Abundah (not too sure on spelling there); are there any similar whiskeys that you think he would like? Would like to keep the price below 40-50 quid, but am prepared to go a little higher.

EDIT: Would a 12yo Double Wood be a good buy?

the abunadh is very heavily sherried

I would say try a glendroanach 12 or 15 year old..both are delicious and highly sherried, a glen garioch 12 year old..the new bottlings are top drawer and not chill filtered so come out of the of the bottle at a very creditable 48% or maybe an edradour (10 year old is good..the 12 year old oloroso cask is even nicer)if you want something different that isnt every day supermarket fare

I was impressed by Tomatin at the whisky fesitval. The 18 year old should suit your dad perfectly if he likes a well sherried whisky; it's bang on the price too. The 30 year old was one of my favourites of the day, albeit benefiting from being tried early before my tastebuds were a burnt out wreck. The 18 year old wasn't too far behind.

Looking forward to trying the Nikka from the Barrel be my first Jap whisky.
Big Peat is nice as well, even has some Port Ellen in it :eek:

Thank you very much, will take a look at those :D Any decent shops that you would recommend?

sadly if you dont have a good independent close to you , then you are looking at paying delivery..thought the whisky shop are doing free delivery on orders over 50 quid..so you could always get one for your self as well :)

Just got a 10% discount for the Laphroaig online shop (on top of the discount for being a 'Laphroaig Friend') so I bought one of these:

Been after a Glencairn for ages but they all seem to be around £8 - £10 but for a fiver it's a bargain!

Went for the Glen Gairoch 12yo in the end (and it comes with a free glass!), now I just need to get it hidden away when it arrives. Also got a bottle of Bulleit Bourbon for myself, seems decent from all accounts!

Glen Garioch is a cracking whisky, though it's so easy to drink it'll be gone quickly, go do a recording of you pronouncing it. ;)

I preferred the Founders Reserve, but the 12 is very nice.
