The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

Aberlour 10? It is a really easy drinking whisky and a great one for people as an intro. It is currently £20 in Tesco and I picked up a bottle just to keep around. I want to try some of the other Aberlour varieties.

I got a bottle of Old Putney Navigator as that was on offer too.

Doh, oh well, £8 for a spot on recommendation beats me shelling out £30+ for a whole bottle of something I don't like.

I like easy drinking stuff, so I will probably never move beyond 'intro' whiskies, any other recommendations in that vein?

EDIT: Some digging has brought up these as other, smoother tipples

Auchentoshan 10 year old
Edradour 10 year old
MacAllan Fine Oak
Glen Moray
Glenmorangie

Try Auchentoshan. It's a pretty solid starter whisky but got a bit more depth of character. The Three Wood is my favourite of their core range. Got a bit of sweetness, but with a nice long fruity finish. Plus, it's my local distillery!

As Ahleckz mentions Auchentoshan is quite good, a bit stronger tastying/depth than an Aberlour. Glenmorangie is very nice as well, I haven't tried the others.
My other recommendation would be Glenlivet 12, really nice and can often be found on offer.

Can anyone reccomend a japanese whisky for around £30 please?

Nikka from the barrel has been recommended to me and I mean to get a bottle one of these days. (It was on Amazon Black Friday)

I had a bottle of this and really enjoyed it. I admit I know hardly anything about whiskey and the differing flavours but it was very enjoyable. Hold on...

Can any of you guys recommend me a great whiskey?
It's for a friend who is partial to his single malts. I know nothing about the stuff.
Budget is £40
Maybe recommend a different one from Ireland, Japan and something more obscure if it exists

Thanks guys.

I've been tasked by the missus to find a malt whiskey for her dad for christmas, I don't drink the stuff myself so is there anyone that would be able to reccomend a whiskey to look at?

I'd usually spend £20 at christmas but could go up to £30 if worthwhile :)

Thanks folks :)

It's hard to recommend something without knowing the recipients tastes. If you just want something around the £20 Asda is selling Old Pulteney for £23.50 which is a pretty decent value for money single malt.

:p

For £20 Arbelour and Glenlivet are usually on offer in the supermarkets at the moment.

£30 should be in the territory of Glenmorangie or Balvenie Doublewood as mentioned above.

All of them are very smooth and good flavours. Does depend what he likes though. Its Christmas and its whisky you can't go much wrong though.

Friend and I are having a whisky night soon, so I picked us up a mini selection of Balvenie (50ml bottles of the 12 yr Doublewood, 17 yr Doublewood, and the 14 yr Caribbean Cask).

I know I love the 12 yr, and he hasn't tried any of them, so a nice way to test the waters.

I went for my first whisky tasting at Cadenheads a few days back as I was given it as a gift and really enjoyed it. I'm absolutely certain my palate isn't good enough to detect the subtleties but it was good fun all the same and rather fortunately we got to try a few bottles that had only been released that day. Lots of information given about the process and the chap who took us through it knew a huge amount. For what it's worth my notes from the tasting were:
  • Hazelburn 10 y/o 46.0%, £37.70 - triple distilled Lowland style, quite sharp and abrupt finish.
  • Glen Elgin 22 y/o 56.8%, £79.90 - Dark rum cask, creamy, sugar and pepper/spicy tastes from the rum. Water opened it up a bit and enhanced the taste.
  • Clynelish 24 y/o 47.5%, £75.50 - Refill bourbon oak barrel, milder than the previous two, tingly (apparently it's to do with the minerals in Highland water), salty and sweet. Lovely and smooth.
  • Highland Park 22 y/o 59.6% £84.50 - Sherry cask, released today. Little nose but tastes both smoky and sweet, despite the high abv was quite smooth.
  • Glen Scotia 15 y/o 58.4% - Sherry butt (larger than a cask at 588 bottles), released today. Harsh tasting, strong taste of salt and the sea. Not keen.
  • Bowmore 11 y/o 58.7% - Fresh bourbon cask, released today. Very dark, particularly old bourbon in the cask prior to the whisky. Quite peaty and tarry but nice.
  • Springbank 15 y/o 46% - Sherry cask, quite mild but lingers at the back of the throat. Better with a drop of water but slightly medicinal (iodine) in taste.
  • Cadenheads Grocers Whisky - similar in style to the blends they started out selling, quite strong tasting, harsh and medicinal.
Clynelish was my favourite but I'd have been happy with a number of them. I ended up buying a 19 y/o Deanston for something different to try so I'll be saving that for a special occasion I think.

I fancy trying some American Bourbon.
Any good recommendations? I take it Jack Daniels and Jim Beam arelooked down on?
Though why?
I've had a look around and Buffalo Trace and Eagle seem have good reviews.

Any other recommendations?
