The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

Juse seen there that its also £18 at Tesco, have never had it before, what does it compare to? I am looking something for the new decanter on the table for xmas day lol. Ideally dont want something too thin, if you know what i mean. Could be tempted to maybe pick up Laphroaig at the £25 mark

If its for the dinner table then personally I would get glenlivet 12yo for 24 notes from Asda. I think that will be more appealing to a wide audience

I just picked up a bottle of Hakushu Sherry Cask 2013.
Looking to source a bottle of Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013 but they are at silly prices going for around £800+ on whisky auction sites!

I tried the Tesco brand malts. I found them all to be drinkable but uninspiring. Fine for the price but nothing special. Might have to give Waitrose a try.

best bet for supermarket own brands single malts is usually Islay...small amount of distilleries means it usually easy to pinpoint the source, its normally caol ila as they have the largest capacity

I am not sure what it is like but I been told that "Green Spot single pot still" is a good smooth whisky it's about £35 from waitrose.

Oh another note I have a bottle of the very special Yamazaki 18 year old coming to me next week!!

Not ever considered myself to be a whisky drinker, but have worked my way through a full bottle of Hakushu 12 year and Nikka All Malt in a few short weeks.

Looking for a decent 'regular' drink to keep in stock that isn't gonna make me feel guilty with the cost after I see how quickly the bottles disappear.

I like a peated whisky, and have almost run out of my Laphroig Quarter Cask. Can anyone recommend anything similarly smokey and smooth at £30-35 a bottle?

How about Talisker? The 10yo is £33.95 at Whisky Exchange. Or you can get a bottle of Bunnahabhain 12yo for £36.95 - a couple of pound over your range but a nice, smooth whisky.

Lovely whisky. I'm jealous.

I've had the Hakushu - nice whisky.

There are many good whiskies around the £30 pound mark that won't break the bank. Auchentoshan, anCnoc, Glengoyne, Balvenie, Dalwhinnie, Glenrothes amongst others all have expressions in the £30-£35 region.

Can I join in with this game?

I know it may not be geared towards a lot of tastes in here (read marketed) but I'm a bit fan of the single barrels and silver selects. Can't wait to get him open.

Would anyone care to recommend me a bottle as my stash is running low. I tend to prefer Speysides, but doesn't have to be. Looking for something light and citrusy with maybe hints of toffee, that sort of thing. Upto about £50

Glenkinchie 12yo is a nice light whisky, it is however a Lowland and may not be citrusy enough for you but if you've not had it before it could be worth a try for a change.

Be prepared for disappointment, I bought it while at the airport and it's nothing special, it just tasted the same but slightly stronger.

I also have a bottle of Serendipity and Fettercairn 30 year old, just can't decide on the occasion to open either. It's my second last bottle of Serendipity so don't wanna waste it either :(

Dailuaine 16 yo?

Possibly a bit too much smoke for me, I tend to prefer lighter malts - might give it a try in the future though.

Thanks, no problem trying something other than a Speyside I just wanted to guide people towards what I like. I'm also looking at the Glen Grant 10yo at the moment, seems a nice light summery drink. Might pick up both :D

Just a quick heads up that I just got Glenmorangie 70cl for £22.99 in co-op this evening, which I thought was pretty reasonable... if not too mainstream for your elitest tastes!
