The Offical Lian Li PC-A05 Owners Discussion/Modding Thread!

Guys, some of you seem to have pretty big coolers in your A05s.

I'm planning to upgrade from a Zalman CNPS9700-NT to a Noctua NH-U12F. I notice that the Noctua is significantly taller than the Zalman; will it still fit my case?

My Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme fits without a problem, so I imagine the Noctua will be fine.

In fact there are a few photos of Noctua coolers on the first few pages of this thread.

anyone know a place i can get a cheap (but not crap) dremel (online or otherwise)?

as i try to stave off sleep so i can sleep properly before my nightsift tomorrow i realised that i still have the Rad, Res/Pump and CPU block from my old Tt LCS kicking around (i think), now i know they aren't the best bits of kit for watercooling (med-high end air at best) but they are there and serviceable, iirc the Rad is also quite slim so wouldn't take up a great deal of space up top.

so what do you think? and more importantly, anyone got a particular dremel they recommend?

Depends what you call cheap, I got a Skil 1415 to do mine, got it online, comes with a few accessories (torch, stand, discs, stones, drills) I got mine when it was on offer but it's still <£30 I think.

The best accessory is the flexible shaft which is quite long and allows you to get into tight corners which you couldn't do holding the main body of the drill.

Took me a couple of discs to get the knack of cutting the aluminium but once you know how to do it the discs last ages. I did the full rad cut on my A05 with one disc and then used the emery cloth rings to polish up the corners and edges.

Try google, where I got mine from comes out on top of the search list.

A couple of tips from my usage:

1. Buy some more discs (all the dremel ones fit ok)
2. Make sure you set it at max speed when you use the discs but slow it down for drilling.

that's perfect, i've used a dremel before on my old Tt soprano (yes,i go through cases like no bodies business :D) which really didn't turn out to great (which is odd, because i'm pretty good at DIY).

thanks

The Draper 40968 on the same site is worth a look as well as I think it's pretty much the same but a bit cheaper and still has the flexible shaft.

Got myself one of these cases a few weeks ago (last one in stock from OCUK!), very impressed - done the only mod I will be doing (which is to drill out the hdd cage). Looking forward to finalising my spec for my new machine now and putting it all together.

How have most of you run your wires to your motherboard? Have you put them behind the motherboard? Any pics would be nice to see where you all have run your wires.

RobbieUk,

I found that when i removed my HDD caddy thing it didnt leave me an awful lot of room for hiding wires, the vast majority of my wiring happened behind the MOBO tray, and down beside the PSU and beside the DVD writer.

I just cut a couple of notches out of the MOBO tray and voila...hidden wires.

Good luck with your build, it really is a cracking little case.

arrrr, so anxious to get this up and running now :( got my CPU cooler and RAM today, just need the CPU and GPU, waiting is sooooooo hard :p

edit: pics, for what they're worth

edit2: ooo, looking at what i should be getting on payday in 3 weeks time i might be able to get it up and running by then if i buy a cheapy stand in graphics card until the following month (and then of course i'll have an excuse to start on a HTPC for the front room...) :D

Anyone else watercooled A05 with thick radiators? Lilke PA, Feser, BIX, or new XSPC XR?

I have, there's a picture in this thread somewhere that shows my internal thermochill 120.2.

I've got some new hardware in at the moment and am in the middle of hacking my case up, hopefully it'll be done for tomorrow and I'll take a new picture. I have a PA120.2 in the roof and a standard sized 120mm rad on the back.

Just finished cutting a hole in the front which I am going to mesh over to aid getting the heat out. Looking sweet so far though!

Edit: See post 228

I know your build ! Youre the man!:) I want to do same with 120.3, but wanted to ask if someone else did it...:)

This is a silly question, but by the looks of most of the pictures, are the PSU fan's being mounted pointing down in the A05 case?

I've got an old superlanboy and thinking of getting one of these. I'm just concerned that it looks like there isn't a lot of room below the PSU for airflow with the case completely closed.

mines aimed down, plenty of room (must be just shy of an inch of all around breathing space)
