I’m really unsure now about the Magic Keyboard. I had it delivered, but it’s still in the cellophane, unopened and unused. I’ve been using the cheap-o stand with the tablet in portrait mode, paired with the keyboard and trackpad that came with my iMac, and honestly, I can’t see the Magic Keyboard being any better.

This is certainly more comfortable as the keyboard and pad can be put where I want them, and more importantly so can the iPad.

Hmmm… think I may be returning it.

I’d return it. Price is ridiculously high for what it is as well IMO

Two accidents per year, and apple care plus lasts 2 years.

well worth it when stuff like that happens. It’s really easily done, especially if kids get their hands on it.

If you don't need the flexibility that the Magic Keyboard provides, then it's probably not for you. For example, are you likely to take your stand/keyboard/mouse to a coffee shop or office? If you only ever use your iPad at home at the desk then Magic Keyboard doesn't make sense. Want to work on the sofa in the living room or in the garden on the lounger, the Magic Keyboard is ideal.

That’s a point. At the moment I’m using the iPad as a second screen / internet computer (my main work machine is an Edit Suite which isn’t on the net). At work, this Keyboard / Trackpad setup is absolutely killer - job done. But as you say, using this at home on the sofa or similar wouldn’t work with this setup.

Think I’ll mull for a while longer!

It works really well on the couch for me, if I know ill be doing any sort of typing other than some quick tweets etc then I use the keyboard. It's much better than the surface pro for on the couch as an example.

Experience is great on Remote Desktop, magic keyboard should take this too the next level. Means I don’t need to enroll the device for work, just jump on the desktop for outlook / teams then swipe off when not needed.

Surely if you’re using O365 you don’t need Remote Desktop

I’m not sure I understand this comment. Perhaps he’s RDp’ing to a computer at work with a work account which does have O365 but he personally doesn’t? Literally 100s of reasons why you’d want to RDP to a Windows machine to do work.

It’s actually less of a technology thing and more of a logical separation thing for me - I really want to this to be a more personal focused device / outside of works projects device rather than allowing work relating stuff - email & teams mainly, to bleed into it. I will see how I go with that and may end up enrolling it and adding Outlook and Teams and try to just be strict with myself around not accessing in personal time but I failed miserably with that on my phone leading to me unenrolling it and going back to a 2 phone system that I can just turn off / stick in a drawer when I’m not working

Thanks! The thing that puts me off those is the lack of flexibility around the hinge (specifically for when in zoom calls)
This looks decent but never heard much about them https://www.brydge.co.uk/products/brydge-12-9-max-plus
Ended up doing a total u-turn and going for the JL offer for the Magic Keyboard - have to say I’m really impressed with it! Does pretty much turn it into a laptop and the viewing angles weren’t as restrictive as I thought they would be. Typing with the keyboard is a joy (aside from the @ symbol being in completely the wrong place… ) and it does feel really well built. Still stupidly expensive for what it is at £250 but seems like the best one to go for.

Ok, so after reading this comment and the one from LiE, I’ve cracked it open as I wanted to use the tablet on the sofa. Brilliant keyboard - absolutely a keeper. It’s a better laptop experience than any laptop I’ve ever had. I'll be keeping my keyboard and trackpad setup at work, and this at home for now.

And for the record, I've put a fairly heavy paper-like screen protector on my iPad, and that's a just-opened 4th gen keyboard (so it hasn't been 'loosened up' or 'broken in' or whatever) and everything fits 100% perfectly. Shuts perfectly, opens perfectly, whatever.

Really? I mean no disrespect but out of interest have you owned or used a MacBook for any period of time?
MacBooks pretty much are the pinnacle of laptops and the one thing that all-in-ones/convertibles/keyboard accessories have never accomplished is a true laptop feel or replacement.
I mean fair play if it works for you then brilliant but I just cannot see a time when I’d rather sit down trying to balance my iPad Pro on the sofa over the outstanding keyboard on my MBP 16. Perhaps I need to try it.

No, that's fair! Yes, I do mean it. I've had a 2006 15" MBP which I used for a long long time before switching to a Dell XPS 15. There's then also been a general carousel of cheaper laptops - Dell's, HP's, I think a Lenovo at one point. But the MBP and the XPS15 have always been my proper ones.

The reason I found this better is because of the weight distribution, based on the keyboard being very short and the screen extending over it. I always find that, when the screens are open on a laptop, it kinda wants to fall away from you when on your lap. Like they're weighted backwards. With the magic keyboard, it was weighted very centrally. And with the smaller keyboard footprint, it fit on my lap better.

That might be fixed with a modern Air or something, bit I haven't tried them.

Also, laptops always get hot on your lap and the fans start going crazy, even getting too hot to be comfortable. No problem with that here

One issue I don't have with my M1 Air. If I need to do laptop stuff (ie terminal, lots of apps open, switching between them etc) there's no way I'd be using an iPad over my M1 Air.

I can see where you’re coming from. I’ve gone through plenty of Windows laptops in my time and honestly when I eventually switched to my MacBook the only regret I had was not doing it sooner. Compared to Windows laptops I too would prefer to use my iPad for sure.
I’ve found the MacBooks to be extremely well balanced and indeed have yet to encounter a Windows laptop that nails the one handed opening as well as Apple. That being said I gather the Magic Keyboard is ‘weighted’ so the balance is there for working on your lap which I can appreciate.
