The reviews are out.

Nothing surprising. It's an iPad with all the good (reliability, apps, etc) and the bad (software limitations). Seems like most performance issues of the 2020 iPad Air are sorted out with the M1 and 8GB ram.

What software limitations could there be compared to other M1 iPads or even the iPad Mini with the A15 Bionic?

Great stuff Apple, ordered last Friday at 2pm, got email confirming I would be receiving it on release day (Friday 18)

Get dispatch notification today. Will be delivered Monday 21

I know it’s first world problems and that, but it’s still poor form.

If dispatched today (from the UK or NL) you'll most likely get it tomorrow regardless.

I’want to give my Air 2 to my mum, but it has a problem. The battery is all over the place. Sometimes there can be loads left, but it will just shut itself down, and I have to restart it by plugging it in again. When booted up, sometimes the battery will still be high, other times it will instantly drop to like 20%. The battery also runs down extremely quickly.

Would a new battery do the trick or does it sound like something more serious?

Combined with its age, that’s classic dead battery symptoms, it’s highly likely a replacement will sort it.

Cheers, can a dead battery cause stability issues like apps freezing, and is there a cheaper way to fix it than pay Apple’s prices?

Yes it can. Lots of third parties replace the battery for you, but it won't be much cheaper than Apple's, probably £30-50 instead of £50-70 that Apple charges.

Take it to a third party place or do it yourself. You’ll be using a third party part though (no matter what they claim).

Yes - the battery can cause all sorts of issues if it can’t supply the juice that is being demanded, it’s very common for the device just shuts down unexpectedly.

Apple got into trouble for throttling the performance of the chip if the battery can no longer supply the juice in attempts to try and stop those issues from occurring. They still do it, just more transparently now.

Just trade the air 2 in tbh. I got £75 for my sons with the same battery issue and I couldn’t see it getting updates for very much longer. Add in the cost of a battery replacement and you may as well take the money towards a standard iPad which will last 6 plus years easily.

These certainly are quick. Whizzing round different apps and tasks is smooth as silk. A big leap in iPad performance indeed, probably the biggest jump that I’ve noticed.

These should have a very long lifespan as long as Apple keep supporting them.

The blue colour is very fetching too. Much better than the boring old grey.

So it arrived on time in the end? ;)

I never held the 2020 model so I couldn’t say. The casing on this one feels fine though. Has a premium feel to it.

Apparently it's to do with thickness of the chassis at the back, you can feel the battery if you try to get a feel for it. Isn't the case with the Pro or 2020 Air.
