This is a good option. In terms of day to day usage the M1 is hugely overkill.
Im sure after 6 years of software updates it won’t though.

It’s one of those things where if you know you’re likely to keep it for a very long time then buying the most recent is a good idea.Im sure after 6 years of software updates it won’t though.
The thing is, will iPad OS ever get to that point? It would need a major overhaul to get to the point where the A12Z chip would be noticeably slower than the M1.Im sure after 6 years of software updates it won’t though.

Why is it a bad device to buy?The A12Z in 2020 iPad Pro is effectively from 2018 (when A12 and A12X came out). This is a 4-year-old chip and the difference in single-threaded performance is quite significant. ST determines how snappy your device is and matters a lot for OS navigation in future releases. A12 generation is still snappy, but won't be for long. GPU performance has also massively increased since then. This is a bad device to buy right now unless you're getting a killer deal for it, and £549 is not that.

I misunderstood, sorry. I thought you was saying the M1 upair was a bad choice. I se you meant the 2020 iPad ProFor the reasons you quoted. M1 iPad Air is the same price, M1 iPad Pro is often just £100 or less more expensive. Getting a device with all those compromises for a tiny price difference is not a good idea.
The main problem for me though is the 64GB base storage. As there’s no 128GB adoption on the air it’s more of a toss up between the 256GB air or the 128GB pro
Someone's going to get a good deal there.11” M1 on MM for £599 only a few weeks old. https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/apple-ipad-pro-11-m1.18950949/

Ooh you are bad peopleSomeone's going to get a good deal there.
I am back and forth regarding touch/FaceID when it comes to the iPad. For reference, I have a 2018 Pro (as mentioned above) and a 2020 Air - the Pro I bought as a refurb for £480 a couple of years ago and the Air I was given as a remote working tool. Truth be told, the Pro never got much use since the Air arrived but I occasionally flitted between the two just for the sake of it more than anything. Anyhow, it looks as though the Air will be recalled soon which leaves me with my Pro. But back to your point (apologies for the tangent), at the time I preferred TouchID as you generally always knew where the button was and you could unlock at any angle - you can also unlock straight to Home Screen if you keep your finger on for a second. Whereas with the FaceID you have to be looking at the iPad at the right angle and swipe up regardless, which is an extra motion. The other thing that really annoyed me was when you hold the Pro in landscape orientation your palm (or mine anyway) ALWAYS blocks the camera. That's a good deal, about 2 weeks to late after i paid only £30 less for an iPad Air, which btw, John Lewis is selling the blue one for £499.
Which leads me to a few thoughts now that I've had it for a bit.
1 - Face ID make more sense on the iPad. To unlock, just tap the screen to wake would be nicer than having to find the sensor at the top every time.
2 - Trying to write a post on the forum or an email on the screen keyboard is more awkward than using my phone. I think i will need to get either a Smart or Magic Keyboard
Other things on my mind, I don't find the refresh rate a problem being a 60hz screen, but I do have concern whether 64G is big enough long term. Back of my mind do think whether it was worth the extra £180 to get the Pro just for this and Face ID.
Or £180 saved towards the next one in 4 years or something, which will be what i do. In that respect, that's already 25% paid for!

With all that said, since I acquired the Magic Keyboard I am now convinced FaceID is the way to go. When I open the case up the camera does it’s thing then one swipe of the trackpad and I’m ready to go - it has been a game changer for me anyway.
That leads on to your second point which I totally agree with. Posting on forums is indeed much easier on a phone than with the on screen keyboard. Before I got the MK I was using a spare Mac magic keyboard that I had lying around if I ever wanted to do some proper typing.
I’m not overly familiar with the nomenclature however AFAIK there is only one ‘Magic Keyboard for iPad’ which is the latest one I’m aware of and has the trackpad.Yeah, TouchID/FaceID is not a problem, just quality of life thing. I am sure it will be a routine when i get used to it.
I think I will get a Magic Keyboard now due to the typing issue, one went on eBay over the weekend for £135 but I wasn't 100% sure if it's a genuine Apple one as the seller was using a stock photo so didn't bid on it. Am I right thinking the 3rd gen is the latest one?
At this stage it purely comes down to personal preference - either option does its job and does it well.Touch ID works much better for me on iPad

Yep the one with the USB port on the spine. It's the one with a USB port on the spine?
Did you go for a black or white version?
