*** The official 2023 and 2024 Mac mini thread (it has the M2 chip, the M4 chip and everything!) ***

The M4 mini has a socketed SSD, although it’s a non standard design. But at least it’s user replaceable. The base model 256GB is dual chip as well so 3000 MB/s unlike the 1500 MB/s on the old base M2 mini.

It's a design that probably works out for me better even though I think it's stupid - as when mine comes I"m going to get an enclosure 3D printed to go on the bottom of my desk for a super clean look.

I'm going to pick up a base model this afternoon, I think it will suit my needs for now. Looking at upgrades to the M1 Pro, I might as well just wait for the new studio to come out.

My plan was to replace my M1 Pro 16" MacBook with the mini and get a 13" M4 air when it comes out for better portability. I've loved my MacBook Pro but it's a bit of a beat for travelling with.

That’s pretty much my plan too although I’ve yet to pounce. At this stage I might as well see if Amazon knock £50 or so off it as they usually do. I aim to replace my 16” M1 Pro with Mini M4 Pro and a MacBook Air

I heard 1 argument for the charging port in the mouse make sense. They don't want people to use it while plugged in as that degrades battery faster. Which make sense. Also, something like 60 seconds of charge lasts like 2hrs? So it's like go for a wee and come back and then continue. That's their argument.

I agree, it's silly...I have that mouse. It is the one I keep in my travel tech bag, because it is the thinnest mouse I can find and don't need AA batteries.

At home I use the same Magic Mouse but uses AA batteries. I have a ton of rechargeable AA Batteries at home so I just replace it when it goes flat with a charged pair.
If you ever want an alternative, the MS Surface Arc mouse is thinner but a tad longer. Uses AAA batteries, so easily replaced when they die, unlike the entire mouse becoming useless. Its not the most pleasant mouse IMHO, but then neither is the Apple one, IMHO.

My procrastination strikes again. I held off ordering the base model to see some reviews after the embargo lifted and now it's out of stock everywhere. It was showing in stock at the Milton Keynes store this morning and I thought maybe I'd pop down there tomorrow morning and get one but now it's out of stock.

I'll just wait for the second batch as everyone knows the second batch will be the better ones, just like those who say passing your driving test on the second attempt is better than passing on the first attempt. Not true but we all have to hold on to things that help.

I am still undecided on spec, the Pro is quite a jump in performance and if it can last 10 years instead of 5. That will be worth it.

I'm holding out as well to see what the base model is like. Although the previous pages screens of the iMac disk speed is a bit of a jump between the an M4 machine and a M4 Pro ... hoping that the mini betters that. Is there any information on what the SSD setup of the iMac is like ?

I thought I would desperate to get the mini, as I jumped away from a Ryzen 3950x to a trash can Mac Pro as an interim ... yet I'm finding the Mac Pro performance perfectly acceptable enough for my needs such that I'm re-evaluating my thoughts on what I need in terms of performance. If the M4 base is going to be a big step up from the Mac Pro, then is there going to be any point in pushing for an M4 Pro ... I'm beginning to think not.

Yeah, it seems all the tech reviewers who has had advance units have the M4 Mini Pro, and not the base model. I know the base model is a solid choice for most people, but that SSD speed in the iMac (same amount of RAM and SSD), do annoy me a little.

And I want to know whether the SSD speed is linked to the 256G jump to 512G or it's just the M4 Pro chipset giving that bandwidth.

M4 Pro has arrived, the box was 70% plug it felt like. This thing is compact. Looking forward to getting it set up later.

DHL's shipping was all over the show on this one, told me it was delayed, then here 12th then delayed and then got the message it was being delivered today haha.
