*** The official 2023 and 2024 Mac mini thread (it has the M2 chip, the M4 chip and everything!) ***

Yes, I mean upgrade to 24G ram, it is still £200 upgrade, no discount. But to 32G of Ram it is another £180 on top.

I just think £200, which is 40% the cost of the machine to get 8G of ram is not worth it.
I've always been fairly pragmatic when it comes to technology, but especially when it comes to apple. In terms of apple i've accepted that there are parts of the walled garden that I cannot change, and so I have two choices - go back to PC (probably not going to happen while windows recall in particular is a thing), or swallow the bitter pill and simply pay what apple are asking for in order to get something specced to fit my needs. I bought the M2 with 16gb memory, and it's fantastic! I lament that I didn't look around for a better price for more storage as while 256gb is adequate, 512gb would I have concluded been preferred with an additional 4tb connected via thunderbolt so that I can offload things like civ.

I don't know what my point is. Just musing at the moment over what I'd need to effectively go on this video production course I'm looking at for a christmas gift to myself and contemplating picking up the mini pro model with a little extra storage. Morning all.

I too have 4TB nvme external ready. 16G RAM will be more than fine. My work M1 Mac Mini has 16G ram and it's been fine so with the M4 it will be even better.

Save the £200 towards the next update is the wiser move.

I’ve had my Mac mini, 2TB M.2 SSD.waiting for 3 days for a OWC Thunderbolt enclosure to be delivered. Its supposed to be here by Thursday.

Still, more time to get myself clued up on YouTube.

The only question is around Apple Intelligence, and how much RAM that takes and what can be disabled etc, that seems to be the primary reason Apple have upgraded the base models.

If it's an option then I would turn that off completely, but yes, it's my only concern, more bloat.

You getting the OWC Express 1M2? Thats what I am considering. I just grabbed a 4tb WD 850X but still need to buy an enclosure. Not sure whether to go premium and just leave it or go cheap and then update to a TB5 enclosure when they are a bit more readily available.

Join us! OWC 1M2 gang :D

Yes, that's the one. it seems to be the best, I think it is coming from the Netherlands, that's the reason for the delay.

Tip, to open, unscrew 2 screws, push to slide then it opens. Mine didn’t come with an instruction…I unscrewed the 2 screws and wondering why it doesn’t lift…it’s like how a remote control battery compartment opens.

When putting it back, mine was very tight to push it back close, which confirmed the thermopad was making good contact.

I do find the light a bit too bright though. I plan to have it facing away from me.

can you not just disconnect the light?

No.

Black permanent marker pen over the light. It won't be enough to completely kill it but it will make it significantly dimmer.

This is a good solution.

At the bottom right of the PCB, you can see the LED. It leads to a "chamber" adjacent, and the opposite side of the casing is a semi-clear plastic diffuser for the light from the LED to work its way to the outside of the shell.

Either a black marker or a tiny square of electrical tape would work.

My Model M keyboard has really bright blue LEDs for caps lock, num lock etc and they're behind a diffuser which is then behind a label with a window. I ended up putting a small piece of paper between the diffuser and the window which dimmed them nicely. There are many options.

Is there a way to see the temperature of the SSD in the external caddy? I bought the ugreen caddy and now the fans has come on it doesn't seem to go off, even though I'm now not accessing the drive much if at all.

Surely, only if there is a sensor on the caddy? Caddy dependent I guess. (Which is why I wanted a no fan one)

I know there are software that can control fan speed inside the Mac Mini, seen some reviewers using it. May be one of those can control the fans in a caddy?

I have a Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard with USB-A connectors for the receivers, I have C to A convertors, what chance the Mac Mini will recognize them on initial installation?
