Which 2024 iPad are you going to buy?

just ordered a 256GB iPad Air M2 11 inch to replace the 64GB Air Gen 4 that my daughter uses. She was forever running out of space for her games (yes, I know, how) and to be fair, it is a minor miracle it still works considering it is no longer flat.
Just ordered the same for my wife for Christmas. He current iPad Air has been broken by a 2 year old. It still works, but lots of damage to the case and a small bit of screen missing in one corner. It'll go in a child proof case as it still works fine.

As well-received as the 2024 iPad Pro and its OLED screen was, it failed to spark as many buyers to upgrade as expected. Now a new report says that the low demand, and little prospect of it increasing, has prompted LG Display to change from iPad Pro to iPhone screens.

This still annoys me so much. What did they expect… funnily enough consumers don’t want to have to spend £££ on new accessories every generation of iPad because they’re deliberately made to not be backwards compatible. There’s also no scheme to trade in old accessories for a discount which means they’re missing another key upgrade incentive. It seems to me it was a commercial decision to try and maximise revenue, unlikely an engineering one, and I’m pleased to see it has backfired.

And I was 100% a buyer who would have upgraded IF they had made it compatible with existing pen and existing keyboard.

I have no need to upgrade my M1 iPad Pro to the latest version. I'll keep using it until Apple stop supporting it with new iPadOS updates.

I think most people have just realised that what they have is good enough and that spending £1k+ on a new iPad is poor investment.

Wasn’t the only thing that become incompatible was the Keyboard thanks to the device being physically different size?

In any case (pun intended), id expect the attach rates for physical keyboards on iPads to by absolutely tiny, particularly the £300 poles Apple sell. The same goes for pencils if they were not compatible.

Normal cases are cheap and not really a dealbreaker.

I’m not even sure what else people would even use with an iPad in the real world.

This.

Mrs Sk8 is still running an iPad Air 2 I think. It still does the internet and the usual consumption apps perfectly fine and there is absolutely no need to upgrade.

Nailed on the head completely! I absolutely love my M1 with MKB and when I look at the price to upgrade it hurts my head as I’d have to get another MKB as I wouldn’t be without it and they’re completely taking the **** with the price.

Pencils too. I have the Pencil 2 (the first wireless charging one) and it can’t be used with any of the new iPads.

It's no surprise. The Apple tax, especially for iDevices has become a bit much. I originally bought a 13" back when they were released but sent it back because (in my eyes) there was little noticeable performance increase over my four year old iPad Pro. Even the screen didn't do anything for me. However, I bought a "refurbed" M4 Pro 13" for £850 odd just a week ago due to my old one showing its age and I’m very happy with it apart from my Apple Pencil 2 being unnecessarily incompatible

Reassuring to see some people agree with me.

I completely get the point about not needing to upgrade too. I’m still very happy with my M2 iPad Pro (bar Lightroom overheating issue) and it does everything I need but despite this I still probably would have upgraded if they had made it compatible with my existing keyboard and pen.

I would still be happy with my 2018 iPad Pro if the screen didn't break. I have an M1 Pro now I think, and I can't tell any difference for my use (light web browsing, watching YouTube/Plex etc). I'd have got the Air if it had FaceID. I'll keep it until either a) it's not supported with the latest OS anymore, b) I notice significant performance degradation with newer OS releases or c) I get drunk and drop it again. But then I bought AC+ this time so have a few years or protection.

It’s also worth pointing out that the whole OC market is down, particularly in the consumer space.

Lots of people bought forward purchases in COVID which led to a boom of sales back then. Once you factor that in, it’s not a surprise it isn’t selling at the same volumes as previous models.
