The Official 5830 Thread!

Thanks Meaker, nice to have it confirmed. Wow, so Powercolor really were conservative.

Did you sell your 5830? That looked like a nice example with the reverse mounted heatsink. :)

It's running in my fiancee's brother's computer at 900/1250.

His first proper gaming computer. Q6600 @ 3ghz, 4 gigs of ram, HD 5830. A big upgrade from his radeon x550 and P4 3.2ghz (single core) lol.

Big fat cooler on the Q6600 is silent as is the 120mm fan on the HR-03gt therefore it just whirs along really quietly.

Well I've been having driver nightmares the last few days, I installed 10.5 over the top of 10.2 as recommended, and I was getting system freezes and other lovely things happening.

Took two rounds of unistall, run Driver Sweeper in safe mode and reinstall 10.2 to get it fully sorted again.

Next time I install new ATI drivers I'm going to take an image of my HDD first so I can roll back to the night before...

There's a 10.5a hotfixed version out now, but I can't be bothered changing again. I saw no improvement with 10.5 over 10.2 (in between the lockups).

I've always removed the previous driver pack first in safe mode before installing a new one and never had any problems in the past - and that was switching between ATI and nVidia too.

Thanks for the info though - I will hold off on updating given your experience. The 10.2's are working fine for the games I'm playing at the moment.

Well I have heard lots of issues of driver cleaner removing something and it screwing the installation up.

I think they use very similar driver structures so it just has to overight from one driver to the next, but they probably do clean up too.

Its safer to install each pack on top of each other now spirirts as that's what they are designed to do.

The only safe way of installing a driver properly and cleanly is to start with a fresh OS, then install the latest drivers for everything.

Installing them over the top has been proven to cause problems, but installing the latest driver fresh can't possibly cause problems because you're installing a the latest driver on a fresh OS. :S

It's been stated by the ATI developers that they are designed to install on top of each other.

I think it was actually stated the other day that installing over the top should work fine by the head developer on twitter the other day, but he didn't say it was intended to do that...

I still refuse to believe that installing drivers over the top of old ones is better than installing them fresh, designing them to work like that would make no sense at all!

Ive measured it, the powercolor is 1.12v, 1.2v for the others with no easy voltage mod. cool and quiet though.

Having another think about this - the cards with a 1.2v fixed setting must be using quite a bit more power - especially if overclocked.

I'm happy with my Powercolor - would have been nice to clock the Sapphire up, but I'll take the lower power, temps and noise this round and perhaps crossfire it if the price drops on a second.

after sitting on my 5830 for a WEEK i finally got it installed last night.

(mobos situation, rebuild a rebuild of a pc)

however i have encountered a Catalyst problem:/ 10.5 hotfix installed.

my 1080p TFT - i can only set via HDTV resolutions, and on 1080p it wont do 60hz.. it says it does but it defaults to 50hz...so i have an inch black border around my screen ...

or i can set it to a bad resolution and get 60hz.. but i mean...its like a thick black border.:/
