The Official 5830 Thread!

Just froze up again, oh joy.

So the old issue is still there. Looks like my W7 install is still playing up.

EDIT: Gonna stop posting on this issue now, as it's not actually related to my 5830 and it's just filling the thread up.

Nope, it literally just freezes up like in the olden days of Windows 95.

I just had a BSOD earlier, and then it froze up. Now when I try to boot, I just have black screens.

Something is afoot here....

Just the usual blue dots of death issue that currently plagues the HD 5000 series because they are too undervolted in 2D mode :(.

It happens on one of my 5770s, but not on the other, even though both the cards have consecutive serial numbers.

When I have the working card installed in the first slot, everything is fine, but if I install them the other way around, I get blue square lockups.

No blue dots for me, just the traditional message screen!

Just wish ATI would get on and release the 10.4a drivers, then I can install them with my fresh Windows install... :(

Might do a kind of interim install actually. Just do a "for now" one to check everything runs as it should...

Reading around, this card really is trading blows with the 4890. The fact it falls either side of this card all the time is strange. Drivers? Could be, or a weird result of a 256bit memory interface, but 16 ROPS disabled not allowing it to make full use of the available bandwidth.

We have to remember the 4890 was desgned to run with 16 ROPS from the start, when the 5830 is using a chip that was designed to use 32 and then reduced 16 as an after thought.

joining the 5830 club.

Bought one just a couple of weeks old for £150 (HIS turbo one with free CoD:MW2 game) and installed it today with a phenom X3 720BE.

So far, so good no problems at all and seems to be a nice upgrade to my old 4850.

pretty much i guess, as much as any £150 gfx card will be...

from what i can see, performance is between like the GTX 260 and GTX 275...better in some worse in others...

given that the gtx 260/275 are not both EOL and cannot be bought for reasonable sums of money, and that the 5770 is too much of a low/mid range part theres not much else that fills the gap to the 5850.

the thing with the 5830 is the current architecture appears to have the ROP linked memory controller`s in that cutting the ROP's in half really does affect the usage of the available bandwidth

interesting article here

http://www.behardware.com/articles/783-3/preview-radeon-hd-5830.html

actually shows current gen to be a bit cut back compared to previous gen.

still at £150 its a great card, only reason i wouldnt get one would be its monster power usage

my 4850 is on its last legs, its crashing in games and is getting crazily hot with stuttering. Mr res is only 1440x900 (perfectly happy with that) would a 5830 be a good buy or due to that power usage would the 5770 be more appropriate?

phill, monsterous power use is a bit of an exageration!

A 4850 used 110W, the 5830 uses 170W, less than a 4870 and 4890.

The 5850 uses 160W, best in watt/performance, and nVidia uses nuclear fission technology.

Onedice, a 5770 is a good choice if you want to crossfire in the future. But the 5830, if you get one at a good price and with a meaty heatsink (many are 5870 heatsinks), run VERY quiet and cool. My PCS+ is near silent in 2D and 3D, never going much above 60C under full load, usually closer to 50C in games!

The 5770 is a short card however and lowest of them all in power use. The 5830 isn't as efficient, only about 10-15W less than a 5870, and is the same length (30cm inc cable clearance) so you have to check if it fits your case.

PS - why not just clean your 4850? Or fit an aftermarket cooler if it's out of warranty? It sounds like it's just a cooling issue.

Hi, yeah that is what I originally thought about doing, I think its the hsf that is the problem too, but I thought its money on old tech, its two years old now (although I might add at my res is a brilliant card) I am I admit hovering towards the 5770 now as its around the 100ish mark and as you say a good size, and very cool with the added benefit of crossfire later on.

I run Crysis at 1920x1200, AA turned off and all medium settings. Looks good to me!

Got my computer going again, not sure why but I have to reset the BIOS every time I make a change. It can be as simple as unplugging a hard drive or plugging one in....

Anyway, full C: drive format and we'll see how it goes. I dunno why my Dual boot would be making a mess of things before it posts, but it appears it has been doing.

I can't wait until I can order one of these cards! They look very good, and right now I had a 6800 LE :\ my computer hasn't seen a graphics update in years, so getting this card will just seem fantastic!! I hope to get one for my birthday in June, so I'm hoping that the card doesn't rise in price, but if it does, what would be the limit that you would stop at were it just wasn't worth the money?

oh man your still on a 6800 LE?! did u ever unlock the pipelines? i had one back in the day but ive had an 8800gt for a while, sold it whilst i wait for my 5830 to arrive...and am now using an old 6800ultra!

the 8800gt beat the pants off the 6800ultra no probs so the upgrade for you straight to a 5830 should be a huge jump in performance!

Yeah, I really can't wait! I've just been upgrading a lot of other parts on this computer and I decided to upgrade the graphics card last as I don't do that much gaming. I never managed to get the pipelines unlocked, when I tried to the computer just crashed :\

Just reporting in no more issues for me since I swapped the cards over and disable CPU powersaving features. I think my PSU may be limiting my overclock, but I've got it stable now for gaming.

This is the quietest gaming rig I have had in a long time. A Zalman CPU cooler running at 1500rpm, two 120mm fans running at 800rpm and the PCS+ 5830 producing little noise and heat. Loving it!

What is a 6800LE equivilant to in ATI terms then? I've never even heard of it! I had a nVidia 6200A in my old Socket 478 machine, then moved to this new one with the 4670, and now the 5830.

Just reporting in no more issues for me since I swapped the cards over and disable CPU powersaving features.
Bully for you.... :P

Fresh install last night, already had a freeze and a BSOD when I woke it from standby.

0x0000001E error mean anything? Apparantly it could be driver related, and this was before I had the motherboard drivers installed. I've also never updated the BIOS because that scares me. :(
