****The Official 7900 overclocking thread****

Do i shade over the physical processor, or do i shade between the connection points?
All the pencil mark is doing is lowering the overall resistance of the resistor.
So yes, a paralell circuit.

For the A7N8X mobo, I shaded in one side of it - Tested with Multi-meter - Perfect.

If you need less resistance again, just keep going over and over.

A 2B pencil works better than HB as it is softer. (Lays down more)

Oh - And got myself one of these cards delivered 2 days ago.
Motherboard arrives tomorrow. :D
Due to reading many threads on the volt mods, the Zalman is on it's way now too. :D
1.4v should do me perfectly.
(And still have conductive ink from the L2 bridges mods a while back)

I've got a Gainward 7900gt 512mb Golden Sample which defaults at 550/700. I had hoped to push it up to 600/800 ish (which Coolbits auto-detects) but I can't seem to run it error free over about 565/765. Above that I get either corrupt graphics in 3d mark or the whole screen getting tv type interference & I have to reboot. Have I just got a card that won't clock much or is there anything else it could be?

Try the card with ati tool.

I have a question for all of you who have fitted a Zalman VF900-CU.

How tight do you fasten the screws on the cooler?

The reason I ask is that I fitted one to my 7900gt last week, then I started getting all sorts of errors and corruption, like little green and red dots on screen, crashing during benchmarks etc.

So I thought that I must have fooked something up, and when I took the card out, I noticed that it seemed to have buckled around where the four screws attach. I took it back off and replaced the original cooler, but it was still not right (although slightly improved). I then removed the original cooler and had a look at the card. When I cleaned up the gpu, I noticed a tiny chip on the top right corner!!!

I then replaced the stock cooler and returned it for a replacement (naughty, I know, but I didn't get it from OcUK :D )

I now have a new 7900GT, and a VF900-CU to be fitted, and I'm extremely nervous about fitting it.

Any advice would be most welcome, because I do want to fit the Zalman, but I do not want to break another card (I'm in enough trouble from the missus as it is  )

You don't have to screw the cooler on that tight, with 4 screws in either corner - there's enough support to keep the cooler in place even if it's position upside down in your PC (I believe it's stated in the manual). It's best not to keep turning those screws until they won't turn any more - you've got paste between the core which should deter you from doing that anyway.

If you’re still at stock volts, then that’s about the limit you can expect on that card (assuming it’s just an overclocked 7900gt with extra memory). In fact without the 1.4v mod then getting much beyond 550/700 is good going. I think I ended up at something like 530/850. By doing the mod though you can reach (600-650)/(750-850).

I've ran the ATI tool & it seems it maxes out at 681/404 but I can't run at those speeds obviously.
Will the 1.4 volt mod give me more chance of getting near those speeds?:)

Is 8678 a good score for a 7900 GT 256mb card in 3D Mark 05?

At stock speeds that's good. If you're overclocking though, even without a volt mod you should be able to get over 9000 gaming stable assuming your processor is A64 4000 speeds at least.

Johnny G, if you are getting up to 681 on the core without having done a mod, you ain't running a standard 7900gt. 581 would be excellant, 681 is beyond the realms of possibility unless your card already has 1.4v going through it. I think in fact I got to about 675 or so at 1.4v, so I'm guessing you've got one of those 512 Bliss cards, and I'm guessing now they've already been modded to 1.4v. A good stable speed at 1.4v is about gtx speeds 650/1600, more is possible (especially on the memory) but may not be completely gaming stable. With 1.55v 670/1700 is probably ok, or 680/1666 like i was running.

Well, just got 9105 in 3D Mark 05. Overclocked the GPU to: 552/784. CPU is overclocked; AMD Venice 3500, clocked to 2.5.

All seems stable. Is that good?

I did say I've got one of the 512mb Golden Sample cards. I also said that I can't run it anywhere near those speeds that the ATI tool detected:)

I do apologise, I should have read that. Your error free speed is about right without the volt mod. Out of interest what 3dmarks are you getting at your stable speed; does that extra vram make much of a difference?

Yes it would be interesting to know

I get about 9300 in 3d 05 with the clocks at about 560/765, I don't know if the extra memory makes a difference when benchmarking but it certainly helps when playing GRAW.
My conductive paint has turned up this morning so I'll be giving the mod a go to see what else I can squeeze out of it:)

Well your score is certainly no higher than i'd expect with the 256 version of the card, but at that resolution, 1024x768, I supposed that's not a surprise.

As for the volt mod, good luck with it. If those 512 7900gt's can be modded in the same way as the 256 versions I think they could be the best value top range card on the market especially at ultra high resolutions. Let us know how you get on.

I've just whipped the card out & the back of it looks nothing like any of the pictures I've seen of how to do the mod:(
I'll see if I can post a pic of it, someone might know what to do:)

Here's a pic anyone got any ideas?
