****The Official 7900 overclocking thread****

Time will tell! Im didnt get rid of my GTX's because I need the extra performance but because I want something new to tweak! and I just love overclocking  :D The extra performance is just a bonus :p

That's a fair enough motivation in my book. I don't think you'll find a better tweakable top end card than the 7900gt (at least not for a couple of months).

ok got my 7900gt and did the volt mod, infact I did it before I even slotted it in :) Its running at 600/1680 without any artifacts or problems. I also fitted a Zalman vf700-cu after seeing the temps at load rise to 90+ degrees  Now theyre at 80 load. Running 3d05 I got 7255, which seems very low, any ideas?

nO}{8. Yeah, that is on the very low side. With clocks like that you should be getting 10k or so (with that processor speed). Have you set the nvidia control panel to 'High performance'? Your temps are also a lot higher than I would have thought healthy. I've done the 1.55v mod and with the vf900 I don't go above 60c. I know the vf700 isn't quite as efficient, but I wouldn't have thought it was that much worse. That heat could even be throttling your overclock and could explain the low score.

Monkeybutt.....I thought you were still thinking about what card to get? Anyway, your score is about right at that level with that CPU. You'll probably find that memory will go a bit further though.

What volts are you running through that? That's high temperatures.... mines on a 1.5v and hits 60C max I believe or perhaps a bit more... but nothing over 65C.

At stock I get 9723 in 3DMark05... (560/1650)... so yes - that's pretty low.

Ive just found out that the vf700 was on low fan speed, bumping it up has lowered the temps to 60 load. Ive redone 05 and got 8100. It still seems low:( I havent reformated for a year, so would a fresh windows help? Any other thoughts?

I gather you're using the latest set of Nvidia drivers? I think I'm on 84.25.

im using the 84.21's that came with the card. Im trying the latest betas now, also updating the chipset drivers.

*Update. Not difference:/ Ive sold my 7800GTX for a 7900gt and it clocks much higher but the scores the same  :(

Well, my first thought is that you are still be throttled by heat. If turning the fan up gave you an extra 900 points in 3dmark05, then the chances are that heat is an issue. Not sure what experiments you can do to test this though.

That's odd, and it's not like we're talking about 2006 where CPU makes a big difference. Ensure you run the tests on a fresh boot - or if worst comes to the worst - you could play with a reinstallation of Windows... hmm...

Well...got my second cooler today as i had to look around to find a compatable one as there was no way of using another zalman due to nowhere near enough room to fit it and the stock cooler is quite s**** in sli due to the extra heat...15mins of fear and it hit 71c  ....anyway just done a run of 2DMark06 @ 1.4v and got 9635....not bad....just need a nice cool day to give it more v's. :)

**UPDATE**

10158!!! http://service.futuremark.com/orb/projectdetails.jsp?projectType=12&projectId=2025960

It was a driver issue after all, as it was enabling vsync even when I turned it off. VERY pleased now, just waiting for the second gt to arrive for some SLI fun :D

Im not going to go to 1.5v, 1.4 is fine for me. Ive heard a lot of cases of a capacitor on the back of the 7900gts getting really hot (80 - 90c) when you pump more volts through it.

Im chuffed to bits :D

Well done nO}{8. That's bang on what you're due with those clocks. In SLi they'll knock the socks off your old 7800gtx set up.

And vocch, what can I say? dear me.....that's fast. I'm suddenly a lot more motivated to do the mod on my new card too.

thanks man, the mod is very easy and reversable, but you will need some conductive paint (got mine for 6.99) and a better cooler. The better cooler is worth it just to shut up that tiny fan anyway:)

I appreciate the advice, but i've already done the mod on my first card (that's how I know what you should have been getting at those speeds). I just went SLi last week and haven't done the same to my second one yet.

Just to give you a target, I got 11.4k in 05 with a single card with the 1.55v mod. Vocch got 11.7k. Mine wasn't gaming stable though so I went back a bit to 680/1670, which still scored 11k. Don't worry, there is plenty of room left in that core and your CPU should let you get to 11k no problem.

im getting 35 idle and 50 load. very impressive if you ask me. Almost 20c lower than stock cooler. Its about 3 times quieter as well.

I'm currently only getting 10.6K on 1.5v @ 630/1800... I'd love to hit over 650MHz on core but would like it to be gaming stable as well... do you think I'd need 1.55v for it?
