** The Official 8800GT 512/256mb Review/Overclocking Thread **

you have a bad clocker, other 8800GT's are really good and cool. The new GTS wont make any difference to crysis FPS.

which gt's are cool then ? mine idles at 50c fan @ 30% hits 70 c with fan at 70% and it's loud very loud my old gts was much quieter and only needed 60% fan to keep it below 62c.Of course the new gts will be better than the GT expect a 10 fps increase minimum in crysis it will also run quieter and cooler.
I think i am not alone in selling on the GT when the gts hits.As soon as details are anounced and we have a stock date my GT is out the door.
It's only purpose for me is to avoid losing £70-£100 resale value on my old card.

The ones under an Arctic cooler!

C64 forgive me for asking but is anything annoying you? you sound vexed! :D

He's just as annoyed as me as my BFG OC is the worst overclocking GT money can buy :(

I know it's pot luck but I only bought it cause it was in stock.

If your doing this for crysis, dont bother, the new GTS wont run it either. Every other game out now the GT will run fine at 1680x1050 ++

No i am doing it for not losing out on resale value lol not crysis that's just a benchmark
i am not vexed at all i payed £205 delivered brand new for my evga 640mb and sold it for £176 and got the gt for £197 delivered.
I will get shot of this gt soon as the GTS arrives or just before so i get a better resale price on the GT rather than sell it for £100 i'll get £160-£170 or even more if stocks are low and they are hard to come by.This card is only good if a budget is tight and you want 5fps more than a gts if i were skint and in the market for a card i'd get a second hand gts 320 or 640 on the cheap rather than this.
If i were that bothered about it i would send it back under the DSR and get a full refund wouldn't I.

Sounds like a plan but are you taking into account the one gazillion cut price 8800GT's that will be released at the same time as the new GTS?

That's why you sell before the masses know that information

Well the way these are selling i can't see that happening if demand is still outstripping supply then a price cut just isn't going to happen.IF any news on that emerges before next thursday i will use the DSR then.

This is my take on it. . .

nVidia moved the release date of the 8800GT forward (ahead of schedule) to *spoil* the release of the new AMD card. The manufacturer of their cards Flextronics were not able to move their production schedule forward as their were busy doing something else so nVidia got Foxconn to knock out the 'pre-production' boards.

I thought Foxconn were pretty big but apparently Flextronics dwarf them in term of manufacturing output. For the record I have never heard of Flextronics before the 8800GT mania struck (never heard of Zotak before either!).

Anyway nVidia's plan has worked, enough boards got out to get people really excited and now its just a case of waiting for the original release date to come, Flextronics will literally flood the market with hundreds of thousands of these suckers, everyone will have them in stock and then the price will become competitive between etailors as they all compete to get our custom.

Tbh who cares ? am over it already really this card is not good enough for keeping, it's noisy hot and can only get 30fps in crysis on high.I would imagine for a lot of people they bought this just to avoid the gtx/gts price drop on a resale i will be selling this card on soon as the new gts arrives.

30fps on high in crysis, what did you expect? 50? even a GTX aint getting much higher than 30 so you cant complain.

at stock mine idles at 50 and load is 82, I run at around 40% fan with 700/1800/1000 overclock and get to about 74-79, its also running a single slot cooler, you can see this, replacing the cooler with a good one can see temps around 50 load, maybe less.

Doubt the new GTS will run cooler aswell if its still a G80.

Hey Will, how you getting on> you had your 8800GT nearly three weeks now right?

And you owned an HD2900XT before, same as me!

Yea I have owned a 2900XT and I was EXTREAMLY dissapointed with it, you've proberbly seen in some of the threads about that lol, but yea 8800GT for 3 weeks and so far very happy with it :D. I flashed it to get some extra Mhz from the core and went from 680/1750/1000 to 700/1800/1000, thinking about flashing back to normal bios now so I can get a replacement through warranty if it ever dies.

Played through crysis at all high except for shadows on medium at 1680x1050 with a cfg and for the most point was smooth enough for me apart from in the snow. Had a go of UT3, all high 1680x1050 was smooth as, wasent on my 2900.

It will run cooler it's a double slot design better fan. Will be madness not to sell on your gt again before the price slump i predict it will go from getting £160-£190 2nd hand to £130 by the time the gts arrives. In a matter of weeks the new price for the very top end card will be £180 this bfg is supposed to be £160 new but i payed £187 going to sell it on before i can only get £130 for it that's for sure.

So you think before the GTS comes out sell my GT for like £170 on the bay and then buy a GTS for around £230+ quid which leaves me 70+ quid out of pocket for minimal performance increase? I dunno if I cba even doing that, just got happy with my rig and time to sell my card, ummmm, I'd have to have a LONG think about that.

I only had mine for 3-4 weeks but coming from a X1950XT-512MB I was quite impressed. I was having a go at BIO-shock at the time and the X1950XT was struggling at 1920x1200 but when I installed the newer AMD card it ran perfectly. I still think that maybe the HD2900XT is ahead of its time because man does it have a lot of SPs, so much raw grunt waiting to be released in the right game.

Played through crysis
Have you finsihed it already?

I finished it in about 11 hours, some people finished it in 8.

The SP's are counted differently with AMD I think, its something like 64*5 actually so each one is doing 5 things I dont fully understand it.

Well your speculating there, firstly we have no firm indication of performance, secondly we have no idea of price.

Ok well providing the GT's come down 30 quid when flextronics get into gear maybe about 40 quid out of pocket, but think about it, cheapest GT been 180-200 quid, they aint exactly going to put the GTS on sale for around £200 are they?

Oh and I heard a rumour the new card MAY be called 8800GTS"X" (GTSX), dunno exactly if its true but it sounds odd lol.

In that speculation I included paypal fees aswell.

Wow, I don't know if thats good or bad, I haven't even started yet lol :D

I think I can hold off for a little while longer as it would be great to see it for the first time at 1920x1200/High with 'smooth' frame rates.

I've got a little gaming project planned for over xmas, I've got the entire Half-Life® series to get through, not even played the original so I will be getting to grips with Half-Life®: Source pretty soon. Dunno if you played any of them but I am interested to know how many gaming hours I have in store?

Half-Life®: Source

Half-Life® 2

Half-Life® 2: Episode One

Half-Life® 2: Episode Two

At least I know my graphics card will have no problem rendering me up some nice eye-candy and smooth fps :p

Looking at the specs the only difference is 16 shaders and a double slot cooler. In my mind that wouldn't warrant the price difference.

Will, keep your GT until the 9800 arrives. You have finished Crisis what else is there to tax the GT ??

Took me 6 hours to complete Crisis, even shorter than Halo 3!
