** The Official ASUS P5N-E SLI & Ultra 650i Thread **

There seem to be so many issues with the GeIL RAM - check out the Memory forums for lots and lots of threads about the PC6400 Ultra Low Latency stuff that I'd be loath to recommend it. If you can stretch to the Crucial Anniversary it's exceptional - truly exceptional. Anything by Corsair also tends to be very stable with ASUS.

Hmm, damn, thought the GeIL was solid stuff! What about this stuff?
OCZ
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-092-CS
or the Crucial C4 or C5
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-072-OC

The OCZ is appealing at the £140 mark with 4-4-4-15 timings, think the extra £7 for the Crucial 5-5-5-12 or £15 for the Crucial 4-4-4-12 is worth it?

i'll let ya off then....

just read this:

Note: These cards require PCI-E x16 slots, they will not function in a x8 slot so for SLi you need dual x16 mainboard. Finally 500W minimum for PSU and 600W+ is recommended.

so i cant' use a 8800 in sli on this board :(

looks like i might have to push to a 680i :(

VR-zone review had no probs with the 8800's in SLI.

Considering 8800GTX's in SLI at the mo, not sure what the performance hit of 8*8 is over 16*16 - can anyone confirm at all?

looks like i might have to sell my geil if i can't clock it enough,,

geil i think is give and go atm, you either get a awsome set, or you get a dodgy set....

Could you stretch to these?

They look a little pricey really, not sure I can justify the extra £30. I really want to get the best price per performance ratio I can get going, hence why i'm thinking of this board in the first place. I'm the sort that when going round tesco's, I look at the price per kg and get the best bang for the buck. ;)

Was there anything particularly wrong with the ocz or crucial 6400's btw?

Also I notice they're PC2-5300, is there any reason they're particularly better than say the PC2-6400 TwinX corsairs?

I also saw these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-088-CR same timings as the 10th anniversary and £20 cheaper, I also hear Crucial are a good make and have an RMA depot up here in scotland too!

Cheers for the link, tho those are 7900's rather than 8800's. The GTS has shown to be slightly affected by 16 -> 8, so would guess the GTX will be a little more so. :(

Nope according to tests there is naff all difference between the i650 and i680 in SLI on either 8x 8x or 16x 16x.

Have a look here:

Scroll about half way down for SLi 8800GTX scores.

It seems to be the "B" batch chips which are running hot. Believe this is the same across the board if you get a B code chip. The hotter running chips tend to need less voltage for a given clockspeed though, so its a case of swings and roundabouts.

Cooling = totally stock intel cooler. It's not stable there though on stock cooler due to temps. Vcore = 1.30 or so and temps are in the 70's loaded. Watercooled she's orthos stable at 3.75ghz w/ 1.42v - again temp limited. If you can keep these chips cool they'll scale very nicely indeed.
Your results may differ to this CPU though, it seems to be "above average" and clocks are really only limited on air by temps. Stock cooling gives pi 1m stable @ 100% OC, have to drop it a lot to get the chip orthos stable due to temps. Afaik someone around here has a chip which also clocks nicely (blknoel perhaps?) also a "B" batch chip but his seems to run at much lower temps which is great news for him.

Thanks for that by the way. :)

Any idea what processors OcUK are currently bundling out, is it a "B" batch, anyone know if the OEM ones are from the same batch as the retail too?

Ive got currently got a ds4 and an e6600 running at 3.6ghz, 450x8. I know my chip with do 3.8ghz easy enough but my board is hold me back. Any more than 450 fsb x8 and it dont wanna boot again and when i try to use the x9 multi the board doesnt seem to like that either.
So basically im looking to run at either 475mhz+ x8 or 423mhz+ x9.
Would you recommend this board for me? :)

Does anyone know where the motherboard temperature is derived from (nortbridge, southbridge etc) as mine is shown as being 50 in the bios, which I think is a tad warm.
Thanks

Thanks WJA96 for that, does that seem a little high to you?. I only have a modest overclock at 2.2Ghz on my 6300 which idles according to coretemp idles at 50 and underload is 56 (orthos blend test after 90mins).

I think it's unlikely you'll get a significantly better result using this board over your DS4. I know that my current test CPU will run at 4GHz under active water cooling, but I cannot get it Orthos stable under passive water cooling at more than 450x8. It will boot into Windows at 500x8, but not long enough to get a suicide shot from CPUz.

Finally worked out the problem with the board not booting before. Feel like a bit of a muppet tbh! Think the GFX card was the root of the problems! For some reason, whenever its installed the machine won't boot!
Switching to PCI card and it's fine! Looks like the crappy X300 has gone into early retirement.
