***The Official ATI Radeon HD 5850 / 5870 Reviews and Discussion Thread***

Plugged directly into my tower socket, I only want to know what my tower is using, peripherals I'm not too fussed.

That's even more impressive then as you've gotta factor in the wastage from the PSU too. Looks like the components are using sub 100w when idle and depending on the efficiency of your PSU, your PC components are using around 200w (for an 80% efficient PSU).

It's a 750w TX Corsair, I think the efficiency on them is quite good as well?

I say 80 because that's the minimum requirements for new PSUs, I'm not too sure of the efficiency of the Corsairs though.

I think my Coolermaster 850w has an efficiency of 85%, I imagine the Corsairs would be the same.

The usual suspects have went quiet at that PhysX news..

I'm going to try that Physx tweak and see how it goes. Will report back if i get it working.

One thing i miss about going to ATI is 32xAA. And the more consistent framerates, especially in Crysis & Warhead. Still, things generally run much better than on my 295 anyway, apart from some bugs.

Glowing Reviews

I have to say that the reviews are very impressive for a single GPU card. I have never liked dual GPU cards so I try to keep up every year or so with the new single ones.
I was amazed with the speed of the one batch of 5870's that came into OC's this morning. They sold out in about 10 minutes! Or at least the 7 cards that were on the site when I checked sold out in that time. I was so close to clicking "buy" as well...
Ah well, maybe with the next batch. ;)

What is the comparison like between these new cards and the GTX295, worth me upgrading?

I wouldn't upgrade if I had a GTX295.

Performance is slightly lower in general, although admittedly the single-GPU should lead to more consistent performance. The only real reason to make the switch would be the much lower power requirements.

I would wait for the 5870x2, and/or see what nvidia brings to the table.

i say u should upgrade asap. Sell 295 gtx asap because its price is going to plummet! I dont know what reviews has this guy been looking at but it beats 295 in 70% of the time

Er, no it doesn't?

From looking at a few reviews:

Slower
Call of Duty World at War
Crysis: Warhead
Supreme Commander
Street Fighter IV
Fallout 3
Farcry 2 (5870 is faster at 1920x1200 4xAA)
Left 4 Dead
Resident Evil 5
S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky
The Last Remnant
Unreal Tournament 3
World in Conflict
Wolfenstein

Faster
Company of Heroes
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

Here is some Stalker Clear Sky Pics

1920x1200 4xaa16af + all ingame settings to the MAX incl Super sampleing AA Adaptive Enabled :)

Gameplay is smooth as Silk, frames never going under 34.

Erm, I think you're the one that's been reading different reviews to everyone else.

The GTX295 is clearly faster in most instances, but by a small margin normally.

And plummeting resale value of your old card is NEVER a reason to upgrade.
