*****The Official Canon 5DMK3 Thread*****

I currently have a 400d, with a tamron 17-50, 70-200f2.8mk2 lens and a 50mm f1.8 prime and currently shoot various things from street pics to landscape.

i am not a paid tog so only do this as a hobby. Is 5dmk3 overkill? The 5dmk2 is out of teh question because of its AF so what do u reckon?

7d or 5dmk3?

Not necessarily, but at its current 3k price point the majority of purchasers will be those who can make that money back with it.

Why do people act like all a sudden the 5D2 auto focus is unworkable. People have been using them for portraits street photos and landscapes with awesome results. It's not like you're shooting sports.

By the same token the 7D cannot far be off being replaced and will you view that as old hat as well, after all it's one of the oldest canon bodies along with the 5D2 ;)

yea true. hence this camera may sell poorly. especially in this current economy climate. Who in here has spare 3k cash lol and even if you do have 3k spare cash, U prepard to drop that on a camera body where you could possibly pay for a trip in orlando florida and buy yourself a nice L lens instead and still have money left?

Who in here would drop 3k on a camera body over other things?

You'd have to be doing something special with street photography to find the 5D2 AF an issue. With landscapes you're better off using liveview anyway.

It'll sell by the bucketload just like the "rubbish AF" 5D2 did. The 22mp is apparently great for 1080p video as it downsamples well. I wouldn't know about that as I have no interest in video, hell I wish they did a non-video version for £500 less! :D

As photography is just a hobby for me, I wouldn't spend £10 on it if it was needed elsewhere.

As said earlier in the thread, the price will eventually drop to that of one closer to what the mk2 retails for.

For that to happen though, the 5D mk2 stocks have to be depleted and there has to be a good supply of 5D mk3s in the stores, which aren't just flying out like hotcakes the second they get them in.

The 5D II has always been criticised for having an outdated AF system even on its release day as everyone was expecting it to be better. I think the mark III is the camera that everyone expected the mark II to be. Obviously it has worked out for Canon as they have sold a shed load of mark IIs and they can string out their technology releases however they please.

I think the only downside of the mark III, as it looks like it is going to be a fantastic camera, is that it's no longer a full frame camera for the masses. It's just so expensive. The original 5D and the mark II really opened up FF to enthusiasts but no hobbyist is realistically going to spend three grand on one. Plus another £2k on a 24-70. Madness.

Does anyone know if there is any truth in them running the mark II and III side by side to satisfy both pricepoints?

I think that's highly unlikely.

As I've said a number of times now, the price will drop, it's not always going to be £2999. The retailers are offering pre-orders at that price because it will be in limited supply and there are those who are willing to buy it for that.

Canon have apparently said they are not discontinuing the 5D2, stores are reporting that anyway...

Well I've just got back from Focus on Imaging. On the main Canon stand they have two 5D3s available to look and and play with and it was already heaving five minutes after the show opened. No sign of the 24-70 II though, which I found a little odd.

The highlight however was an hour long hands-on session in the CPS booth next to the main stand, where eight people per session got the chance to be talked through the 5D3 with a guy from CPS. They had both a 5D3 and 5D2 there to play with and compared, both fitted with a 24-70 and both gripped. The new 600EX flash was also there.

The 5D3 is stunning! So nice to handle and use and is just what we all hoped for, the perfect blend of the 7D and 5D2. Loads of nice little improvements over the 5D2 aswell. From what we could tell, given that we only had the rear display to go on, the high-ISO noise performance looks amazing tbh.

If anyone going is a CPS member then I'd definitely recommend trying to get yourself into one of these sessions.

Obviously it's going to drop a bit but I think anyone who is expecting it to be less than £2500 within the first twelve months is going to be disappointed.

Not bad for 25600, but it seems to show blurring of the fine details even at lesser ISO's, was NR off?

You're seeing that in those images where exactly? The lowest ISO shown is 3200 and you don't have an ISO 100 image to compare all this lost detail to? You really should stay away from DPR, it's not healthy ;)

Having looked again it may be DOF related, but it's hard to tell. This is the loss of detail from 3200 6400 that got my attention.
Also on the bottle, allot of the little highlights have disappeared...

Yeah the 6400 shot doesn't look as sharp, again though this is ISO 6400 in camera jpeg. Do you shoot jpegs for your weddings? Seriously just wait for better info based on RAW output.. Although as you're getting a D800 I don't see why you're too concerned, or are you contemplating a move back to Canon?

What can I say, Canon was my first! :p

I'm currently deciding on a 35mm 1.4 or another D700 atm tbh.

When I build up another cash pot, I may then trade in one of the D700's for a D800...
