The official Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP Thread

Well, a mixed bag from different users with regards to input lag on this screen, quite annoying as I was really looking to get one - the sheer number of inputs alone would be hugely useful in the long run for me.

Am going to keep a keen eye on this, as with some calibration I reckon it would be acceptable as a replacement for my 2001fp & LG 1710B I'm running at the mo :)

With the 2407WFP monitors, Dell produced several revisions, from A0 to A4. What exactly were these revisions? Were they just firmware revisions or differences in hardware? Is it possible that the next revision of the 2408WFP might address the input lag issue?

I'm a bit confused about what they say on page 5 of that review about viewing angles :

First of all , lateral viewing angles with IPS technology are by far the best. Next usually come monitors with TN panels. In the past (more than 2 years ago), TNs were rather catastrophic from the side angles. Now, it is possible for several people to share a screen, even if they aren’t perfectly in front of it. Finally, we have the PVAs and MVAs, which are more or less equivalent. Beyond 40° from both sides, there is a loss of contrast, which however isn’t too extreme. In fact, there are only really problems when looking from below.

I had always thought lateral viewing angles were much better on PVA's than on TN's? If I'm wrong then in my opinion there's no point getting the more expensive PVA, with it's input lag, I might as well go for a TN with it's faster response times.

there weren't hardware upgrades, just firmware changes really. some info on changes here: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/dell_2xx7wfp.htm

From my experience, PVA/MVA horizontal viewing angles are still ahead of TN Film, but TN Film has certainly improved in recent years. Vertically, TN Film is still very poor though remember

Thanks, Baddass. Yeah, I forgot about the vertical issues. I'd be using this as a tv/dvd screen for guests so I guess vertical viewing angles will be pretty important.

It's a real shame I can't find the 2407WFP out here. I certainly won't notice the difference in colour with my colour-vision-deficient eyes. I really thought it would take them some time to get hold of the latest Dell monitor where I live, but the 2408WFP is all they can get now.

2407WFP's REV A01 and A02 had colour banding issues this was corrected with REV A03 , then the Panel changed with REV A04 to SPVA, then 2408WFP replaced these as REV A00

The panel was always S-PVA with the 2407WFP, they didnt change that. There were some scattered reports of an AU Optronics AMVA panel being used in some A04, but not always it seemed. 2408WFP rev A01 is expected soon as well:

Sorry to just jump in here. I was thinking about getting this monitor, especially because my friends really rated the 2407.

The main reason I was thinking about it was because the contract ratio is 1300:1, rather than the norm of 1000:1. Before reading these threads, I was going to ask if the input lag really is as bad as the Anandtech review says, but now I it seems I should really ask what a good alternative would be.

Annoyingly, I game and design (so the contrast ratio would have been a real bonus), and it doesn't seem right to sit on the fence and get an "all rounder" monitor. My other option was either the Samsung SM-2493HM or a BenQ FP241W. Does anyone know how good these monitors are for designing and gaming. Also, are there any other good recommendations.

Sorry for the lengthy post. Any input is appreciated :).

(P.S. Thanks for all the research in this thread too :) )

I'm not enjoying the 2408WFP, I'm not sure if there is a clash with the 8800GT or perhaps I need to fine-tune some settings but the colours are not right and the text is a little blurry with a slightly coloured aura around it?

I think I have used the whole 24" range of monitors from DELL now, they all seems to have good things and bad things about them, would be nice to produce a screen only using all the good aspects, the perfect panel.

So your 2408 is a lemon to then buddy? that really sucks! I still can’t get over how many duds you have had! Bet you can’t be bothered to return it after your past dell support shenanigans

I really have loved the last 2X05FPW and 2X07FPW range of monitors, maybe Ive been lucky  I'm not one for trying my luck so I think I will jump ship this time round :o

All UK EURO 2408WFP / 2407WFP are CZ Czech Replubic. Eric Bunny on Ebay sold some US imported ones that are Mexico IIRC US products do not have a valid warranty here

So what exactly would you want from a Dell 24"? What would make the perfect screen for your needs?

Personally, the colour quality is what roped me in. After reading some reviews on TFT Central, however, it seems that most monitors can be calibrated to have nearly the same performance. Even though the 2408 is a nice piece of shiney, I'd probably say it's worthwhile looking into a Samsung 245B. The TFT Central review seems to rate it. So, if nothing more, it might be a good stop gap until the Dell revisions of the 2408 hits us as the Samsung is nearly half the price. Well, 2/3s of the price :P.

I guess it would be the 2405FPW with the inputs of the 2408WFP.

I been looking at a 2405FPW for three years so this newer 2408WFP is really weird, that OcUK logo at the top of this page is fluorescent orange and blue, it was always red and blue.
