Isn't the killer that the PS4 is using GDDR5 memory for everything while the XO is using DDR3 across the board? Given the PS4's (alleged) higher clock speed on the GPUs, this would combine to give the PS4 an edge in actual power.

I think this will become more of an advantage when the developers get to grips with the hardware later on. I cannot wait to see what Naughty Dog do with the PS4 tbh.

Inclusive internet is included with most smart phone contracts. It would take seconds to connect, activate then switch back off. Annoying yes, but this is a very unlikely scenario anyway unless you live out in the wilderness or visit the grandparents often.

It's not with mine. I get 100MB free for two weeks after topping up and then I have to pay. And as someone has already said, not everyone has a smart phone. Either way, I shouldn't have to jump through all these hoops for something that no one else has done, no one wanted and benefits no one other than publishers and Microsoft.

It will be more than an edge, the GPU in the PS3 is substantially more powerful than the one on the Xbox.

If we were building a PC with the same GPU's they wouldn't even be in the same league this is no 670GTX v 680GTX scenario, not even close.

There's nothing to get to grips with, the extra grunt will just be there, unlike say the Cell in the PS3 which had all this theoretical power but it was extremely difficult to access.

Stop acting like it would be a common occurrence. I could make excuses for not wanting to buy any product if I got down to little things like that.

It's also worth mentioning that because everything for XBox1 PS4 and PC are all built on the same architecture (x86) we are much more likely to actually see real world differences between the consoles according to power.

It's not really like the scenario with the last gen where it didn't really matter the PS3 was the more powerful console as it was harder to get that juice out.

With the PS4 it maybe as simple as companies being able to be able to set textures to high on PS4 games and only medium on Xbox1 games. While PC users of course get to select all their own settings.

I'm obviously over simplifying it a bit here to make a point. Just trying to explain that the extra power in the PS4 matters a lot more then the extra power in the PS3 did.

The clock speeds won't differ much, and GDDR vs DDR is swings and roundabouts. Both consoles have basically the same graphics architecture, PS4 has used the excess transistors to introduce more shader cores, Xbox has used them to introduce a local cache on the DDR RAM. The memory architectures on both consoles are broadly similar, DDR3 has faster overall access times whereas GDDR5 has a much higher throughput at the expense of latency.

I'd expect the Xbox to have better memory performance, both in latency and access to the 256MB (or whatever it is) of commonly used stuff. The PS4 has 50% more computation to throw at graphics. I think the PS4 will be overall faster, especially as developers get to code to the underlying architecture and not via Hyper-V.

I'm not justifying it, but it really is a non issue for most, DRM has been around a while and hasn't affected me once.

This is a poor attitude. It's like the people who say they wouldn't care about being monitored by the government, as they have nothing to hide.

It's not about that at all, it's about the principle of it being totally unnecessary.

It's not completely unnecessary though, it helps combat piracy.

Shader clusters can't just be re-purposed like that to be used as cache.

The GDDR5 will also make a big difference, the PS4 has around 50% more memory bandwidth.

That's a big difference.
