Might get one of these, cheap, should oc well and could be a speedy upgrade over my x2.

x1900xtx to begin with, will then migrate my current main rig parts to it

Just need to deiced if its really worth it and then begin to coax the money out of my bank :p.

According to Intel's roadmap these chips are meant to recieve a price-slash in quarter 2 (end march/early april?) are u really gonna wait that long? To top it off they will be releasing the e6320/e6340 (4MB) chips at roughly the same time (I know u want one of those), so whats it gonna be? :cool:

All those descriptions, oversimplify? There's only "one" vcore, yes? You know, the actual droop measured with a multimeter. None of this monitoring rubbish, most of em over-read.

Lol, well if you care to teach us all how to measure vCore using a multimeter (and also recommend a cheap multimeter) then maybe more of us can 'skip' the 'monitoring rubbish' ;)

In the meantime we have to make do with what we got/can use!

Simple fact is you're more than likely under-volting from where you think you are. Monitors/Bios can be miles out, boards droop by design and don't tell you. You talk about all these vcores, there is just the one. Same goes for memory, mch, fsb...

DMM's? Look for a description/spec for 3.5 digit accuracy. If you're overclocking get a multimeter. Its a must. I like Fluke or Micronta DMM's. Cheaper ones are just as good for this application, don't pay more than £30/40 from a popular highstreet electronics store. If you're willing to spend hundreds on a board, £30 isn't much to make sure things are as they appear. Its also quite handy for testing PSU stability.



Vcore. More than likely someone will have found the voltage points for you. Look/Ask. If they haven't, they're not hard to find. The manufacturers place vpoints (little copper/solder dimples) for testing. Two wires, black one to PSU black. Red one to vregs/smd around the socket (if you can't see the vpoints). Monitor a point off load, change the voltage in bios and see if it changes. Find the lowest in the range that changes = v***. Don't be surprised if its lower. Bios values often have fixed offsets that vary from idle to load. Ever noticed a voltage change after a bios flash? Two identical boards can read differently, calibration. Once you know the actual offset, then you can trust the bios value.

As long as you don't short two points and stick the DMM on DCv, you wont hurt anything.

Yeah I'm not sure how long I'll hold off, I do want one of the 4MB chips, but I'd be quite chuffed with a near 100% overclock on an E4300 to tide me over for a year or so. I guess I'll be looking to spend around £300-£400 on CPU+Mobo+RAM and a decent cooler.

Board wise I'll probably go for something cheaper like the DS3 or DFI 975 board, as I'm not bothered about SLI/Crossfire, just want to hit a decent FSB and really grill some decent DDR2.
 
Interested to see how the E4300's clock. I was about to get an E6600 as they are now only about £80 more than an E4300 in some places. But I suspect the E4300's will start to fall in price once supplies improve.
 
I want to hear mobo and memory configurations. DDR2-800 memory too. Are the core duo boards fussy about memory? Also would a socket 939 cooler work (xp-120)?
