To be honest I've not felt the compulsion to upgrade my Kickstarter Beta to Premium Beta. The game looks great, but even in Premium form still seems very limited for an 'Elite' game. Hopefully standard Beta will open the galaxy up a hell of a lot more.

If it is as good as I hope, then I won't actually mind paying for the expansions either.

Its worth it to get the add ons. According to the recent newsletter the beta release on the 29th of July is going to be a massive release.

I'd advise people sitting on the fence to wait. £100 is a lot of money for a game that is in it's fledgling stage.

That said, the game is awesome and I don't regret shelling the money out for a second

That game got me through one of the lowest parts in my life, no money, no job, no girl friend and no mates....

Think i got to year 3324 and deadly i could be wrong it was 20 yrs ago but i played it a lot. That and watching Startrek next gen on BBC2 at 6pm...

A few people in this thread have mentioned playing sp offline to avoid the bad player meme (ganking ect)..

I'm pretty sure we could sort out a private sever to coop on, this games asking for coop: Fighter escort of large freighter and injected events for example. Why miss out of such fun because of some sour lemons on full open? Besides that From what I have heard the farming/spoiling is going to be frowned from high up so they might have a few more tricks to prevent excessive pvp bullying..

Like I say, before release I'm sure we can come up with a plan for those wishing to avoid the bad side of pvp. In the light of day we'll work stuff out, At the mo my world is spinning, too much to drink lol

I don't think there will be private servers in Elite however there will be private groups you can setup to only see certain people / friends. Other than that as you say people can run escort for the larger trading ships.

Additionally I think part of the problem at the moment is there isn’t any local police force or militia to go after people or a fully developed bounty system for people to go after.

No problem, just making sure people know there won't be actual private servers

This is the bit relating to multiplayer groups from the faq:

"We have the concept of “groups”. They can be private groups just of your friends or open groups (that form part of the game) based on the play styles people prefer, and the rules in each can be different. Players will begin in the group “All” but can change groups at will, though it will be possible to be banned from groups due to antisocial behaviour, and you will only meet others in that group."

Voted. Interesting to see the Oculus Rift listed as one of the voting options - surely Virgin could show off the Oculus as a peripheral for Elite?

Got the beta yesterday and was rather fun... Pre ordered an Oculus Rift and got a x55 Rhino coming too ;D

From the latest newsletter (#30):

We hope and expect most people will choose to play with the full online community, but from Beta 1 you will have other options too. You will be able to create friend lists, and just play with a group you create from that list. Another new option is single player. From Beta 1 you will now be able to play on your own if you like. You will still encounter other ships in the game, but they will always be AIs.

Also Beta 1 has the Law.

How many are playing this with a HOTAS setup and if so which one? Do you find it easier to control over a gamepad, or is it a case of it just adding to the immersion.

So very tempted to pick up something like an X-55 for both this and SC.

I'm using the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X and very happy with it, no calibration needed, Elite sees it and is good to go. It's very responsive, solid feel, nice weight and has got to be the best option out there if we're talking best bang for you buck.

If money's no object then obviously that changes things but at less than £35 it qualifies as 'awesome' for Elite and certainly make you feel part of your Sidewinder or any other ship.
