And what is ED tracker exactly?

EDtracker is a little USB connected gyroscope that you attach to your headset/cap that controls the free look by moving your head.

Costs £25+p&p for a made up version or you can make it youself if you're handy with a soldering iron (software, plans and specs available freely).

cut for space

I really want that Voice attack but my pc is in the same room as my wife when she is watching tv. I tried in other games with voice commanded stuff like Arma, but if I talk she keeps thinking I am talking to her, plus I feel a bit silly lol! I know it's really stupid, but I can't do it unless I am in a room on my own lol.

Talking about the stick, am really enjoying it but I need to practice a great deal..my aim is awful! I can't beat the 3rd scenario atm heh :D

is head tracking any good?

Take a look at the youtube video posted by Neil a few posts up. I would say it is very good and gives a much more immersive experience.

Thanks for the video Neil I have emailed the guys making the EDtracker off the back of that video, hopefully their waitlist isn't too long. I imagine they will get a swarm of orders in the next few days because of the beta.

yeah i watched the video earlier, but i'm wondering how natural it is to look at screen whilst moving head in a different direction?

You set the sensitivity, so you may only turn your head 15 degrees left however in game your view will turn perhaps 60 degrees etc. I think you can set it to whatever feels comfortable for you.

Ah nice. What makes them different to the tracker? I guess this is just a two axis gyro?
(no depth?)
ANd the cost I guess?
The EDTracker uses accelerometer and gyro readings to determine orientation. The game only exposes two general inputs for head tracking (pitch and yaw) so while the device can also do roll there's a limit to what the game supports.

It's slightly flawed in that gyros inherently drift, but the developers of the tracker have got it to the point where the drift is so minimal that you can play for about an hour with having to reset it.

It's well worth the investment as a cheap alternative to other trackers (at least ones that don't rely on expensive computation for face tracking).

^^ Here's a little video I did for some friends to try and show them (a) Elite, (b) Voice Attack, (c) EDTracker - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZEINHinsdc

I have dozens of buttons on my joystick of which I now use just a couple. And I don't even touch my keyboard except on rare occasions. ie: Voice Attack is excellent!

Great video, will definitely use this when I get the launch copy (no beta for me)

I've got TrackIR 5, tend to disable other axis anyway as I don't want them in most games lol

Picked up the lifetime pass this evening, i'm dying to see planetary landing, hopefully not too far down the pipeline.

From what i've seen I'm not entirely happy with the super cruise system, i'm hoping they can reduce the 'instance' type vibe you seem to get dropping out of it. Will get a proper look at it tomorrow when the beta hits i guess.

Its getting better all the time you used to sometimes sit there for 5 minutes;)

Started playing the scenarios last night, took me a while to figure out the config for the 360 pad and KB short-cuts but once I did I was away... Until Predator and Prey, that thing kicked my ass for a while until I realised what I actually had to do and was actually really easy.

Once I'd finished the scenarios I installed Voice Attack and started creating commands, needs some fine tuning but it's really quite easy to use and definitely adds immersion.

Received my HOTAS X this morning and have to say I am really really pleased. Considering it is a cheap £40 stick, it feels fantastic. If I had to say something negative the only thing I can think of is I would like a couple more buttons/1 more hat switch thingy and the cable that connects the stick and throttle is a tiny bit too short.

Agreed. Got mine the other day too. Very nice bit of kit for the money and makes a world of difference on Elite.

Looking forward to playing the main game today whenever it launches. Sick to death of the combat missions - and I suck at them anyway :D
