This is good, but Im a bit peeved that yet again another game require some kind of 3rd party application (rather than a feature in the game) in order to gain an advantage or enable you to maximise credit generation... sigh.

"gain an advantage", sounds suspiciously like cheating or bone idleness :D

I'd say so, even an xbox controller is a million times easier to use.

Totally disagree. I stopped using controller for m+k. Mainly because the controller doesn't have enough buttons, so you gotta use the keyboard anyway for landing gear etc. so much easier to just use m+k. Plus I don't like the throttle being the bumpers.

I find the mouse and keyboard perfect now.

Ladies and gentlemen, as someone who played Elite when it first came out, and loved it, is this worth paying the £50 for the beta right now and if so would I be better off buying a joystick to play, thinking of the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X, over using the keyboard and mouse?

So I played this with my father on the Acorn Electron, who excelled as resource manager and trading while I took over during combat.

I have to say even at this early stage and acknowledging the simple gameplay mechanics of the original, I absolutely love it. In a complete reversal I’m enjoying just puling trading runs between the systems and staying away from combat situations, which I do find a little tricky.

I currently have an X52pro, TrackIR5 and voiceattack set-up, although I cannot seem to get voiceattack to work as yet. Moneywise, I’ve sunk 150 quid in to this via the kickstarter efforts and I would happily do that again and again, part in thanks for the times I had with this game with my father in the 80’s and part just to be included in the enthusiasms of this venture with David Braben and the whole team at Frontier.

It has been a fantastic journey and long may it continue.

Cheers, Paul.

I too remember this from 85, though it was just me who wasted far too long playing it, and just like you Im loving it, a real trip down memory lane and it still even at this early stage feels like Elite.

Voice attack is really easy to set up and get working and so useful

http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=12857 - has a great PDF that goes through the process, they key bit is thinking about what you want to actually say for your voice command, as there are so many options and to make sure your key bindings in the game match what you set up in VA

Luckily ED has dual bindings for most commands so you can map a command to a button on a joystick as well as a keypress

I've gone through the PDF and been trying to use the profile already configured from that link. Although VA recognises the commands when I speak them, it doesn’t seem to get translated within ED. Oh well. I'll keep playing.
Cheers, Paul.

Don't use the profile that as posted as it will only work if you have the same key bindings as that user.

Create your own, start off with a few simple commands and go from there. We are lucky, as with all the bindings available on the X52 pro, we don't need voice attack

I have various engine speeds set, set pips to systems, weapons, engines and cold running, and a couple for navigating the 3 HUD's, landing gear and lights, that is it (so far!)

I really recommend you start with one or two commands, and then work out what is a pain using the joystick and then use voice attack to configure that...

Edit

I have a question, when using dual monitors, is there a way to ahve the 2nd monitor so that I can run a spreadsheet where I can list my trades? At the moment the game exits to taskbar the moment I try and update my spreadsheet.
I have an extended desktop, but the only other options seem to be to use only one monitor or the other.

A spreadsheet? May I ask what for? To track trades?

Use tablet, smartphone for your trades?

Manual docking is easy enough but I don't think its been pretty. I'm getting my joystick tomorrow so I'll see how that performs over my joypad.

I remember just keeping a notebook (of the paper variety) next to my Amiga when playing Elite and Frontier back in my yoof. It was the only way I could remember what I was paying for goods and to help make sure it was actually worth while doing certain runs. I don't think I ever put so much effort into keeping notes in a game since :p.
