I wish I had your optimism (I don't) but I think if you have the surplus cash then why the hell not and it's a great way to look at it. I am not convinced at all but I funded from the off. Not really because of this game but because I feel Braben was one part of a game that I really enjoyed more than every other bar maybe SWG and shaped one of my hobbies. And for that he deserves more than just the original purchase. It's a shame about the layoffs but that is hardly a big percentage of the studio and I would guess with all the procedural content the need for scores of artists is lessened somewhat. It's still ticking over though and I am sure they'll get a rush at the end.

Thats a shame dude, you dont even think its worth a punt? I played both Elite games to death, I thought that I would give Braben the chance to make this game and to impress me :)

Haven't looked into the details but this isn't uncommon with game studios and one of the reasons some are quite large for what they do (200+ people) tho depends if the people let go knew they were in that position or not. These days for a studio like Frontier when a new project comes along you have the core (permanent) people working on it then hire a bunch of people with the relevant skills for that project and then once that project is released and in a stable state unless another project comes along that demands the specific skill sets these people have their contracts won't be renewed.

Have no idea if this is the case with these people tho and not really the best way of handling it as an employer - this close to christmas I'd have atleast extended their contracts into the new year.

I did give it a punt from the off - more from a nostalgia view than confidence in the pitch though. Like I said he deserved the pledge just for the past.
 
^^ Given the timeframe they are working to for release, the work shown, the promises that have been made and the ones that haven't coupled with a fairly good guess at the level of technology thats been developed from dabblling, etc. over the years I suspect the release will be along the lines of a HD remake of the original elite (with multiplayer) with updated graphics, gameplay concepts and so on taking advantage of modern hardware and the more frontier based aspects coming probably around a year later aslong as they get the relevant funding.

You really can't do compelling planetary interaction aswell as the rest of a game within a year - its another years work all of its own and aslong as they continue to show positive progress towards that end goal I'll be quite happy.

Yep I agree Rroff it's all well and good having these massive procedural universes but what the hell do you fill them with in regards to meaningful content.
 
Whats the difference between the 80 and 90 pledge level? Can you up pledges presumably to get the respective items? E.g. I upped my pledge to 90 so I can get all the updates/expansions etc...

I funded that book too :)

Another encouraging thing is that despite the number of pledges today being relatively small, it's still a decent value, so there seems to be some good size pledges going in as well.

I believe there was 3 £3000 pledges placed in the last 24 hrs ALL 3 were verified and checked authentic the pledgers posted on the comments :)

I made a note of the amount of pledgers in the last 24hrs it was aver 200
