What HOTAS set-up are you guys using?.

I'm more into strafing than conventional flying so I'll need the ability for the vertical & horizontal strafe split - along with forwards thrust (want to learn to fly without flight assist).

I assume I'll need the rudders for left/right strafing & a duel stick throttle (one for up/down strafe & another for thrust?).

SLOWER??!!

Have they nerfed it, or something?
I'd have said the Viper is slower, but with more firepower (or at least fairly equal)...

I think you are confused. Viper has a top speed of 320, vulture is only 210 although they are both very maneuverable. Also, Vulture has 2 large hardpoints vs 2 small and 2 med on the viper. Vulture is a slower viper with better firepower. Those 2 large hardpoints pack a punch.

Viper boosts to 415 with A grade kit. Vulture boosts to about 380-390 ish.

Vulture only has 2x hard points but they're 'large'. In terms of real world damage, The Vulture is significantly better when fighting the larger ships, since medium/small weapons have a damage penalty against anything big. Viper is good, but Vulture is far more efficient at racking up the kills in my experience.

Is this only available direct from the publishers? Would like to give it a go but I'm a bit wary of paying £40 for it if it's not something I'll enjoy.

Also reviews aren't filling me with lots of confidence, lots of talk about it being very unfinished or has this changed since release?

Yes, only available from FD direct, as for the reviews, they are going to be very subjective as it absolutely depends on what you are looking for in a game of this type. Unfinished? of course, no game that is based on continual development is ever finished, you just have to make a choice as to whether or not it has enough features to satisfy you in its current state, it certainly does for me.

I felt the same way since I was only marginally interested (peer pressure, what can you do?), and the first 20 minutes in game will have you a bit bewildered because it's a lot to learn at first.

That said, I am completely sucked into the game, and if you game with friends, playing in a wing is very very fun (especially as space pirates)

Ooof, RES seem to be far better than Nav beacons for bounties. Just made 940k in not much time at all in my little Viper... not sure exactly how long it was but can't have been more than an hour. Wonder if I can find a good laser-only Viper setup, having to reload the multi-cannons takes up time.

Ah, I see - you meant in a straight line!
In that case, yes. However, I was thinking about manoeuvreability, since straight line/boost doesn't really factor in how I fly, in which case the Vulture is 50% more nippy than a Viper.

Also, Vulture has 2 large hardpoints vs 2 small and 2 med on the viper.
You cannot get gimballed C3 M-Cannons (and I think a few others), which limits what you can actually bring to bear and maintain on-target to result in effective firepower. The Viper's ability to go all gimballed, coupled with FA-Off slides makes it the better fighter for me against most targets.

Viper is good, but Vulture is far more efficient at racking up the kills in my experience.
In mine, the Vulture is great at small-medium targets, but against Asps and above I actually find it easier with a Viper. Then again, I fly an Asp anyway, so it's almost moot.

Vulture is definitely the better looking of the two, though! :D

Id say the Vulture packs a punch , did my usual looking for trouble and took out a good number of ships before i triggered a pack and got pounced by 4 of them sorted them out but with 74% hull remaining , jumped to get my ship fixed but came across a conflict zone , poked my nose in before i got to fix up the ship and made 6 or so kills till i was head to head with an anaconda and got him down to 50% hull. I had to make a run with 30% hull left ... got to many unclaimed bounties to risk lol

I have 4 beam lasers on mine.

Takes shields down pretty much straight away and if you keep close to the target, a kill does not take that long.

I don't have cannons for the reason you sated about reloading.

Also letting the security forces do most of the work helps as well :D

I have done 6 million in 3 days since I got my viper, with no hull losses.

Thanks guys, guess I'll trawl some YouTube videos and research it a bit more before committing :)

I am in the same boat pretty much, the big worry for me though is (From the Videos I've been following on YouTube) the Devs seem to 'meddle' a lot on the 'balance' and I'm very, very wary of getting in to another endless MMOesque cycle of OP'ness to Nerfed-the-snot-out-of. I'd also more than likely wait for it to dip <£30, if it was £20 right now I'd buy it without even thinking, at that price I wouldn't care if I really liked it or not! :p

Do NPC pirates ever get the upper hand? They keep jumping into nav/res sites then getting demolished in short order by the security services (and me). Anyone ever seen them overrun a site or succeed in blowing up miners etc?

CH Products - Fighterstick and Pro Throttle for me.

Yep, got that myself.
U, D, L & R strafe on the right cross-hat, F & B thrust on the left castle, along with yaw (no room for pedals under my desk).

I assume I'll need the rudders for left/right strafing & a duel stick throttle (one for up/down strafe & another for thrust?).
Nope. As above.
If you've used a twist joystick for yaw before, you will likely find it takes a little time to relearn Yaw on a button instead. Many find the mouse stick (left side) works well for this.

Yeah, but that's the beauty - These guys do actually listen to the community and make alterations based on feedback. Moreover, they are pretty darn quick about it - During most of the Beta and Gamma, faults were found and patches were out within hours... unlike certain other spacey-MMO type devs!

I'd also more than likely wait for it to dip <£30, if it was £20 right now I'd buy it without even thinking, at that price I wouldn't care if I really liked it or not! :p
I was a die-hard, nothing can top this, BDSSE fan of Star Citizen.
I then played one hour of Elite, the early, crappy, highly unpolished Alpha version over at a friend's house.
From that moment, I was sold and signed up to the Beta immediately. Not stopped playing it since and instead went and spent far more money than I ever intended to get a HOTAS that does the game justice.

Do NPC pirates ever get the upper hand?
Pirates... not so much. Not at RESes, anyway.
I've gone in for the old "Floating Cargo Not A Pirate Trap, Honest Gov" trick they sometimes like to play, knowing full well I'd be jumped by three or four Cobras... only to have a 'They Have A Cave Troll' moment when they threw two Anacondas and a Fed Dropship at me instead!!!!!!!!!!
I was in a fully-tooled Asp, but they hammered the heck out of me so fast it took a moment before I realised how much hull I'd lost and had to skedaddle sharpish.
I'm also finding more of the larger ships in conflict zones too, which can get quite close if you're not paying attention to where everyone is...

Anyone got a good custom binds for this? using X55. I would like to set the Mode switches to Combat, landing, etc..
How do you set this up? It's a bit overwelming for me..TIA.

Took advantage of the cheap X55 deal that recently ran here and loving the HOTAS so far apart from the common ghosting issues. Anyone know of a fix? I've tried the USB 3 and powered hub solutions to no avail. Randomly dumping millions of creds worth of cargo is getting on my **** now!

I discovered I only get ghosting if I leave the HOTAS plugged into my PC when it boots up. So, I've learned to unplug the HOTAS after a play session. USB2.0 or USB3.0 ports don't make a blind bit of difference for me.
