For me the thrustmaster wins as you can split the throttle from the flight stick and it was just enough cable to sit either sided of the keyboard. Could not get to grips with them when the 2 sticks were attached as this felt very restrictive in movement.

I fully agree with this. I can't emphasise enough how important it is to have a separate stick/throttle to add the immersion of the game.

I had a Saitec/Madcatz Fly 5 stick which had a built in throttle. However it felt too confined having the throttle right next to the stick. It was a nice stick, but I ended up selling it.

The ability to separate the throttle and stick (which the Thrustmaster HOTAS X lets you do) is a major plus.

Yeah I quite like my Thrustmaster. First stick I've used but it definitely adds to the experience. Could do with half a dozen more buttons and the ergonomics for the throttle seem a little off with my big hands, but otherwise it works nicely.

So i'm assuming HOTAS is the way to go then, looks like I can get the thrustmaster or cheaper Speedlink Black Widow locally so may pop off tomorrow and have a look. Wouldn't want to spend any more than £50 initially as I haven't played enough to know if i'll stick with it or not. Im sure if the game grabs me in the way that I hope i'll eventually get a nice upgrade kit

Ta for the advice :)

I have a cheapo cyborg v1, which is fine for the majority of the gameplay, but I do find myself yearning for more buttons (especially one for push to talk), and the trigger button could be more reliable. 2 of the lads I game with got the thrust master and rate it highly once you get used to the bindings.

Don't worry about feeling a bit bewildered, you'll suddenly find that it all clicks.

It helps if you get on a teamspeak server with other players so you can just ask how to do stuff. If you need any tips on how to get cash together for your first ship, give me a shout

So is Elite Dangerous worth the money? nt)

Hi

I used to like space shooters a lot, having played most of the classics in the past except x3 and Eve . How is Elite ? I read good reviews from web sites, but mediocre ratings from users.

If you need more buttons then I strongly recommend you get the Voice Attack software (it's about £5) when combined with a mic/headset. The ability to speak commands replaces the need for a lot of buttons and it greatly adds to the immersion.

In relation to the bindings I've set up my own, but it can be a pain in the a**e resetting them each time ED is updated (though in recent updates they've managed to keep my settings).

Hope I'm not repeating myself too much re. Voice Attack :o (I've mentioned it in a number of previous posts) but I can't recommend it highly enough re. Elite Dangerous when it's combined with a HOTAS stick

The only thing that I would worry about worth voice attack is that I am always on teamspeak with my wing, so I would worry that I would inadvertently do something whole chatting

You can easily back up and restore your keybinds, you'll find it at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings\Custom.binds :)

Tbh from what I've seen the game is very similar to Elite 2 and Frontier in terms of core gameplay hichbfornsome may not be a bad thing but its now 2015 and people expext a game like this to be more fleahed out with new and different ways to play a game like this.

Personally as good as it is elite for me is more of a promise of things to come. It is currently pure sandbox with no purpose other than to get a bigger ship. If that is enough for you then get it if not give it some time....I think it will be awesome eventually.

Will get it end of 2015 - at the same time as the retail release of whatever VR device i go for (probably occulus) Its the same with Alien Isolation....seems to me the experience is at least quadrupled with a VR headset so dont want to spoil it (or get tired of game)....will wait...itll be worth it :)

Really enjoyed the alpha/beta but being honest, since full release and the hype has died down I just don't feel compelled to boot it up.

I cannot put my finger on what's wrong, it's a polished version of the classic but it just doesn't feel right. The weird thing is, when I load into my game I can spend a good few hours just running the same trade route 20 times add a new part to my ship then log off. I rarely get that 'just 10 more minutes' or 'one more bounty hunt'. I'll just call it an investment for the future!

I played it to death since Alpha, got 350Mcr in the bank, but I just got bored..

Tbh, it has a really good flight model, there's just not enough stuff to do.

I bought it because I loved the original, but, I have only played it once and that was just to do the very first combat tutorial. I haven't been back to it since. haha, I think I am scared of the commitment that a game like this needs.

Right on. Using the same excuse myself, certainly with alien.

Elite needs a ton more before I consider it anyhow, hopefully come the end of the year, they'd have fleshed it out, and rounded up a decent price, a'la gold edition.

I didn't get that "just one more turn" feeling that kept me up playing the Civ games either from trading, but once I started exploring it was a different story; there's always the temptation for "just one more jump", you never know what you'll find in the next system and of course every jump takes you closer to your target destination.

I'm over 18K ly out from Sol now, at the edge of the core working my way towards the Great Annihilator. I'm loving it out here: the scenery is breath-taking, it's like a sort of interactive music video (but not as lame as that sounds :p ). I'll probably stay out here for a few weeks, really no reason to hurry back to explored space unless they release a new ship that I want (Fed Corvette and Imperial Courier, I'm talking about you!).
