I'm using a 360 wired pad and it's better than the mouse / keyboard combo, but still lacking in buttons. I think I'll be stumping up for a decent joystick in the new year.

Yeah, I have to agree, so far I've tried M/K, 360 pad and a X52 Joystick, thoughts are:

M/K - Unusable for anything other than the most basic of flight.
360 - Pad - Fine, but a bit fiddly setting throttle control exactly as you want it during combat.
X52 - Amazing, The throttle control and all the buttons of a HOTAS controller take some getting used to, but it makes so much difference and for me this is the optimal way to play the game.

If anyone is interested I have some gameplay vids up on Youtube (I'm a complete and utter amateur so don't expect fancy editing or a sparkling commentary though lol :p ).

I think david played his cards well with this, they released a really good looking alpha, that puts most retail games to shame. I only went for the 30 quid tier, which was almost $50 here, but having seen how well they are doing i wish i had gone for a slightly higher one.
Having waited what seems most of my gaming life for this game, i can hold out a few more months :)

Im the same, I paid enough to get a free digital download version and to name a planet. Back in the day I can remember running home from school to play this, so Im really looking forward to being able to take a trip down memory lane

Somewhat tempted by these videos as an early christmas present.. Might as well kiss my degree goodbye with this and Star Citizen :(

I do like the way they seem to have managed to get the scale of space but intimacy in combat also - in many similiar games all you see of the enemy is their marker on the HUD or a tiny blur of the mesh.

OMG, especially for an alpha, that looks absolutely jaw-dropping. I fear that, on release, at the age of 44, this game will take me back to being that schoolkid utterly addicted to Elite on his BBC Model B that I was in the early 80s.

Next question - do I have a hope in hell of playing it on a rig with this kind of spec:

CPU: Core 2 Duo E8500, 3166 MHz
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS4
RAM: 8GB DDR2-800 Corsair XMS2
VIDEO CARD: GeForce 8800 GT

Not expecting to be able to play it with all the graphic frills obviously :p

Joystick isn't a problem - got an old Logitech in the cupboard I haven't used for years ...

This game will ruin me, its one I have feared for a very long time (I almost want it to be rubbish (jk))

Looks like K/M is out of the window then, had a suspicion that it would be, being the type of game. Was hoping to get away with the 360 pad if a purchase was necessary, could be useful on other games, but this looks like putting you at a disadvantage.

Apart from the X52 pro, is there any other stick worth buying? just seems that a lot are going for the X52 against any other from reading the forums over at frontier.

Ive had the x52, CH fighterstick, Ch combat stick and also the Thrustmaster HOTAS. The one i always go back too is the MS FFB 2.0 because it has the most comfortable grip.

I've always used the throttle control from the X52 with a mouse rather than the joystick for these types of games.

Has anyone tried that setup with this game?

Very reassuring at least my X52 will get something to play with this year with any luck :)
