Logged in last night for the first time in months. Friends convinced me to play open with them.

Right at the end interdicted by a cmdr :( He quickly disabled me with his engineer weapons. Thankfully he was a "nice" pirate and offered to let me live at 1% hull if I gave him half my cargo of explosives.

I had to get him to talk me through jettisoning is as I've never had to do this. Not really that enjoyable to be frank, I would have though he would scan me first to see I had nothing of worth.

No, play on Möbius or not at all.
If you play in open you are just asking to get ganked.

...and the fact this POV is becoming more and more the norm demonstrates why PvP and OPEN is failing :(

Alas there's no reason why a "pirate" should distinguish between being "nice" and just blowing you up for the lolz. The game doesn't give a tuppeny fudge so is it surprising many players don't either?

You're lucky TBH you weren't just blown up and that the pirate at least had a modicum of "gameplay" in mind.

Until FD heavily penalise mindless Pilots Federation destruction, give pracy some love, and actually add in some improved PvP (& therefore also PvE) gameplay mechanics/scenario, this will carry on.

As a footnote to this, consider if right now you wanted to PvP in ED... What would you do? Look on a missions board or a Powerplay's tasks and sign up to escort/attack a convoy? Attack/defend an area around a nav beacon? Run/enforce a blockade?

No! You'd have just two options really! (1) See if any friends are in the game and organise a fight between you which is for no ingame reason/outcome. (2) Fly around (probably a game hot spot such as a CG) and just interdict and destroy any CMDR you can.

Is it suprising OPEN is such a mess when FD have invested so little effort in orchestrating PvP? And from comments in livestreams they do not even plan on added co-op missions/tasks any time soom, yet alone ones to help orchestrate (legal/consentual) PvP.

ps: When I've done piracy in the past I would give clear instructions and only shoot if the victim ran, and typically to only lower their shields in order to limpet them. Very rarely, and only under my failure to get any cargo/compliance, would I destroy a victim. And IMHO this is the behaviour the game should reward... A piracy rank/reputation should be based on this, and destroying a Pilots Federation member illegally should be a serious matter!

Yesterday FD delivered their results to the market. They said they'd sold 1m more franchise units for ED in 2016, bringing total sales to 1.8m so looks like solid growth in the playerbase (2.1m franchise units). Money from ED sales went to both ED & Planet Coaster development which makes sense corporately but I predict some mightn't be impressed with that. Overall, to me, ED's future development seems financially guaranteed for the moment and congrats to Frontier on a good year for them.

Yeah I guess I was lucky, trouble was I ran because at first I assumed it was an NPC. His name was weird and his instructions (after I ran) were obviously from a macro, plus I assumed I would have been able to outrun him.

He also first stopped shooting when my thrusters were disabled, probably had 50+% hull but as I said nothing/did nothing, he carried on to 1% and gave me a last chance.

I don't mind open, I enjoyed seeing people around stations, I think this just made me more aware I need to perhaps forcibly do the engineers as I don't think I would have been a match in a battle or we need to stick in our wing...we were all in different systems at the time which didn't help.

I also need to get back to grips with the controls, lost where to type as I never type as I'm on TS with friends, and never having to try and jettison cargo.

No idea why the cops didn't show, I'd made sure "report crimes" was on as I knew I was in open.

I'd guess it's not about the cargo value, so much as properly conducted piracy. That's quite a decent protocol he had and if more players were like that, it'd be pretty cool.

By who?
Once you leave the few starting systems, you're lucky to even see another player. This galaxy is massive!!!

Alas there's no reason why a "pirate" should distinguish between being "nice" and just blowing you up for the lolz.
Pirates want your cargo.
Murderers just kill outright, for the lolz.

The game doesn't give a tuppeny fudge so is it surprising many players don't either?
Blowing up a ship, IIRC, destroys most of the cargo too, so negating the point of piracy.

I've started playing in Open more as I joined a player group called Dark Echos. They're good fun. I am far less worried about being interdicted now that my Corvette is engineered to death... literally. But I do often find myself playing in Mobius. I find most people are friendly in Open but not all

I still love ED. It's a great experience and the engineers are easier without commodities

Epic website for anyone wishing to engineer

What are folk using for trade these days? I was always a thrudds guy, still looks fairly active but I see a number of results coming back which are quite out of date.

I use Slopey's, mainly because I did a little bit of testing for him during some early builds and he was nice enough to include a G19 applet!! ;)
