You've then got to restock your limpets from the ship restocking tab, where you buy fuel and ammo etc. It's second or third icon from the bottom on the left.
This was painful! Thought I'd restocked all and then "out of limpets" at the crash site. Managed to work out (I think) you a) need cargo space to store the limpets (assuming the collected cargo replaces that limpets cargo space) and b) you restock via the Advanced Maintenance sub-menus!

e: well that was a complete waste of time. All limpets expired and zero cargo collected. Pffft.

How many limpets did you take with you? They shouldn't be expiring for at least 5 - 10 minutes depending on the grade of controller you picked up.

Collecting raw materials from crash sites (or brain trees / crystalline shards) with limpets involves a specific technique, you can't just fire the limpets and have them bring back the goodies.

Edit: This only applies to surface sites. High Grade Emissions signal sources can be collected just by launching your limpets (and opening your cargo scoop). Since they boosted the amount of materials you can get per signal source, this is the only sensible way to collect manufactured mats.

That link was helpful. I was hovering over the crash site and I could see the materials canisters on the ground and without targeting (not for lack of trying) anything I fired off a limpet. I could see it fire and then a few seconds it died or expired or whatever the phrase was. Reading that link suggests i was far too close to the ground. Even though I opened the cargo scoop prior to firing any limpets, firing them seemed to open and close it automatically?!

When you launch a limpet while your cargo scoop is open, it looks for a moment like your cargo scoop closes, but it should then show as open again once the limpet's finished launching. Sometimes I mistakenly try to open it again in that situation, which actually ends up closing it!

Yeah you were too close I'd say. I find it easier to land on the planet and gather the resources manually from the SRV. I usually do that whilst watching a YouTube video or something!

It's pretty annoying only having 4 cargo space in the SRV and playing finding the magical spot to allow transfer between ship! I'm going to endure to get the FSD completely to engineered level 4 and then see about upgrading shields and weapons but first I'll go sit on some RES sites to pinch some bounties!

Dont forget your Kill Warrant Scanner

The last Titan bombing got and PP2 got me back into ED a bit. Currently playing MSFS 2024 though since getting a month of gamepass. Has anyone here pledged to a power since the launch of PP2? If so which one? I am not sure whether it provides enough engagement to keep my interest. I have pledged to Pranav with an alt account to try it. I have decided to keep that account on small ships and hence I already have more money that I can spend.

I pledged to LYR after the end of the war, so far it's been a pretty good experience. Finding a good discord for whatever faction you end up pledging to is I think essential. PP2 is like a lot of ED difficult/obscure to the uninitiated. Having people to ask "how to do xyz" will be essential. Especially as some of the mission terminology is still in PP1 terms and some of thaty has changed in PP2

Pick a faction that gives bonuses to what you like to do the most and know that there is a learning curve to the experience.

Enjoy Cmdr

Wow, okay. Since "considering" rejoining back at the beginning of Decemember, I've:

Made it back from Beagle Point to Colonia in my Anaconda.

Joined the [CLB] Squadron (cheers @Adam-r !).

Bought a Mandalay with Arx, outfitted and engineererd it at Colonia, and experimented with a little exo bio and exploration nearby.

Heard the last Titan was heading to Sol, so hot footed it back to the bubble. Read up/researched the Anti-Xeno initiative, resurrected my old anti-xeno Anaconda and re-outfitted it appropriately (including hitting up Guardian sites for more blueprints). Built a Python Mk2 and a Krait Mk2 to their combat specs too, the Anaconda with modified shard cannons just feels the most fun of the lot.

Murdered 3.5 billion credit's worth of Thargoids while systems were recaptured (including doing the Hutton rescue run), got in on the Titan bombing and subsequent freebie SCO engineered drives.

Bought a Cobra MkV that I later realised I had no purpose for.

Found out about merit farming via platinum laser mining, bought, engineered and outfitted a Cutter and made it to #4 on my power's leaderboard, maxing out PP 2.0 and unlocking all the modules.

Heard about the Pilots Trade Network and the incredible work those guys are doing, and made another 4 billion or so credits doing carrier restocking and wing missions. I now have three or four Type-9s scattered in various systems these guys use to help with loading their Carriers up. I hear the crazy-credit-farm Booze Cruise to Rackham's Point is in the works, but unfortunately I'm not going to be around for the next couple of weeks so will miss out :(

And this is all without even touching Odyssey ground content yet.

It's a great time to return to Elite Dangerous. Is it perfect? No, there's still plenty for Frontier Developments to work on (CQB needs fixing badly, amongst other things), but is it great fun, absorbing and addicting? Hell yes!

Just hit 8 Billion, time to head back and get a FC :)
i am almost at that point as well.... currently at just under 7 billion.... which should be enough to get the fleet carrier i want along with 12months worth of upkeep so long as i suspend all the services (i want to have them just in case but the reality is i am unlikely to use them).

for the most part it will just be a mining / exploration mobile base where i can store all my stuff and then wait for a CG or really good mission demands etc and get top dollar.

not in a huge rush however as am currently limited to selling at LYR systems as i aim to get to level 100 in powerplay 2 for the bonuses (which will come pretty quick, in 2 days i got to level ..... 20 i think).

PP isnt something i am going to get into in terms of working for expanding my power i doubt BUT it gives a really nice bonus to the things you already do in game.... so basically what ever you like doing most, pick a power that rewards that thing!.

i plan to go out in the black and once i am at level 100 i will get 100% bonus on all exploration stuff with LYR, as well as ...................... (from memory) 25% trade dividens i think.

but you get points for everything which is nice and periodically reward caches which can give you some really nice bonus materials etc.

You did all that in a month:eek:
Think that's a year's worth of gameplay for me:D
