To expand on what we reported in the past few days, Lorenzo Fertitta stated that he was “not happy” with the ESPN and when asked about the new partner after the current contract expires in August, Fertitta said that they want “something big … ESPN is stopping MMA gaining maximum traction in the UK. Need a station with more views, gain traction then big fight PPV,” indicating that the organisation’s aim for the UK market is to have fights broadcast on pay-per-view.

It seems then that all signs currently point towards a deal with FOX’s UK counterpart, Sky television, after the ESPN deal expires in August. Despite moving away from the pay-per-view business, ‘Box Office’ movies and events are still big business and as the most established sports network in the UK, Sky certainly have the resources required to push MMA (and the UFC brand) into the mainstream outside of the United States.

Traditionally, the pay-per-view model does not work in the United Kingdom, but if the UFC were to put on an event at the O2 Arena featuring a big title fight and a couple of the most popular fighters on the roster, fans would almost certainly be willing to part with their hard earned cash to tune in. On top of live fight cards, if you include The Ultimate Fighter, UFC Tonight, UFC Central, Ultimate Insider, UFC FX and Fuel TV cards, which would more than likely end up spread across the various Sky Sports or Sky Entertainment channels, it could end up being the perfect scenario for the UFC.

One possible option is that Sky broadcast US pay-per-view events on Sky Sports and European cards on Box Office. This would avoid fans having to cough up £15 for a card that wouldn’t even begin until 3am in the UK and would hopefully allow the UFC to stack British cards with big names, who normally fight on pay-per-view. One major criticism that fans have had with UFC events held in the UK is the lack of title fights or ‘big draws’ such as Anderson Silva or George St Pierre. Of course, this is down to British cards not being broadcast on pay-per-view and the UFC understandably not wanting to sacrifice a fight that would pull in a solid buy-rate on free television.

I think sky would be so much better for the sport as ESPN are pretty useless at marketing etc, also would hope all prelims would be shown on sky, don't think the PPV idea would work as we never get big enough fights to warrant the money but would be happy to pay for a stacked card

You may be right; I've been told on more than one occasion that "UFC can't be a real sport because it doesn't get coverage on Sky Sports News like boxing does".

Yes this weekends UFC card may just very well be the best for this year?! so many top names and fights...

I can see the Japanese fighters will be fighting that extra bit hard to win and put on a show, almost reminds me how the brazillian events were I think there home crowds roars just give them a 30% fighting boost.

The fight between Sheilds and Sexyama will be awesome, sexy has no choice but to win or loose his contract so should be an epic war, a lot are saying hes got this but I feel shields is the better wrestler and has better cardio and youth behind him, hes not gonna be able to out strike or knock him out exactly but his wrestling and bjj is on another level and if he can outstrike from a distance ala GSP jabbs he can win it. Course one right hand from sexyama can change it.

Also he does look good at welterweight:

Still dropping to this weight at his age im not sure how his cardio/power will be effected!

Hunt vs Kongo should be awesome and fun, hunts awesome and can do some damage and good at getting back to his feet and with decent scrambling but he only looked impressive in his last fight since with Ben rothwell since his cardio stopped towards end of round 1.... I can see Kongo with the better cardio/ and alround mma game edging out a win proberly will wrestle him and take him down and ground and pound but hunts dangerous as well with his boxing.

Joe vs Pettis.... fight of the night surely/ Joes gonna come out strong but I feel pettis his boxing/striking is just one notch up, he just has to watch out for submissions and avoid the ground game or his active gaurd. Joes always a dark horse still !

frankie vs henderson so equally gifted.... I gotta watch all there fights again just to see who may take it, so hard to predict that one !

few strong words by Dana for Mayweather

In response to this tweet by floyd,

"Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he's Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don't get the same praise."
